Schedule 1 of Form 2290 is the page the IRS stamps and returns to you after you file the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax return. It lists your vehicles by VIN and weight category, and it is the document states accept as proof that the HVUT has been paid. You need a current stamped copy every time you register or renew plates on a truck of 55,000 pounds or more, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection requires it for Canadian- and Mexican-registered heavy vehicles entering the country.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290
What Schedule 1 Does
Form 2290 is the return; Schedule 1 is the receipt. When you file the return, you submit Schedule 1 listing every vehicle you’re reporting for the tax period, including the VIN and weight category letter (A through V for taxable vehicles, W for vehicles you’re suspending based on low mileage). The IRS returns a stamped or watermarked copy back to you, and that stamped copy is what any outside agency will ask to see.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
The tax period runs July 1 through June 30. For vehicles already in service when a new period begins, the filing deadline is August 31, which means the stamped Schedule 1 for the 2026–2027 period comes back after you file by August 31, 2026.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2026) For a vehicle first driven later in the year, the deadline is the last day of the month after the month of first use, and the stamped Schedule 1 for that vehicle follows the same schedule.
How to Get a Stamped Schedule 1
E-File
You cannot e-file Form 2290 directly on IRS.gov. You go through an IRS-authorized third-party software provider, and the IRS lists approved providers on its website. Once the IRS accepts your return, the watermarked Schedule 1 comes back through the provider, usually within minutes.4Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 This is the fastest way to get proof of payment, and it matters when a registration renewal is close.
If you’re reporting 25 or more vehicles on a single return, e-filing is required. Suspended vehicles don’t count toward that threshold.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
Paper
Paper filers send Form 2290 with both copies of Schedule 1. Filing in duplicate is required so one copy stays with the IRS and the other comes back to you stamped.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025) The mailing address depends on how you’re paying:
- With a check or money order drawn on a domestic bank: Internal Revenue Service, P.O. Box 932500, Louisville, KY 40293-2500.
- Without payment, or paying by EFTPS or card: Department of the Treasury, Internal Revenue Service, Ogden, UT 84201-0031.
- With a check drawn on an international bank: Internal Revenue Service, International Accounts, 1973 Rulon White Blvd., Ogden, UT 84201-0038.
The stamped duplicate comes back by mail, and the round trip can take several weeks.5Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Your Taxes for Form 2290 Plan accordingly if plates are due.
You need an Employer Identification Number to file, whether on paper or electronically. The IRS will not accept a Social Security Number on Form 2290. Each vehicle’s VIN has to match the title or registration exactly, and a single wrong digit will get the filing rejected and delay the Schedule 1.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
What a Valid Stamped Schedule 1 Looks Like
A paper-filed Schedule 1 comes back with a dated “Received” stamp from the IRS. That stamp has to be clearly legible; a DMV clerk who can’t read it will reject the document.
An e-filed Schedule 1 carries a digital watermark instead of an ink stamp. Your e-file provider delivers it by email once the IRS accepts the return.4Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 Before you take a printout to the DMV, check that the watermark reproduces clearly on paper. The IRS specifically warns that you may need fresh ink or a different printer if the watermark isn’t showing up. Either version should show the correct tax year, the right VINs, and the right weight category letters for your vehicles.
Using Schedule 1 to Register Your Vehicle
States are required to verify HVUT payment before they will register or renew plates on any vehicle at or above 55,000 pounds. The IRS instructions put it plainly: use the stamped Schedule 1 as proof of payment when registering vehicles with the state.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025) Without it, no plates.
One narrow exception covers recently purchased vehicles. If you bought a new or used truck within the last 60 days and haven’t had time to file, a bill of sale showing the purchase date can serve as temporary proof. Once the 60-day window closes, the state will want the actual stamped Schedule 1.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025) Fleet operators who buy throughout the year lean on e-filing for exactly this reason.
Canadian and Mexican Vehicles
Owners of Canadian- or Mexican-registered heavy vehicles operating on U.S. highways at 55,000 pounds or more also have to file Form 2290 and pay the HVUT. Customs and Border Protection asks for the stamped Schedule 1 before allowing entry. If the stamped copy hasn’t come back yet, CBP will accept a photocopy of the filed Form 2290 with Schedule 1 attached, together with copies of both sides of the canceled check, as a temporary substitute.1Internal Revenue Service. Fixing a Wrong VIN
A VIN typo is the most common Schedule 1 problem, and the IRS has a dedicated fix. File a new Form 2290 with the “VIN Correction” box checked, put the corrected VIN on Schedule 1, and attach a short written explanation. Use the Form 2290 version that matches the tax period you’re correcting. The IRS returns a new stamped Schedule 1 with the right VIN.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 The VIN Correction box is only for VIN fixes; don’t check it for other changes.
Replacing a Lost Schedule 1
If the stamped Schedule 1 is lost, damaged, or never arrived, you can request a copy in writing from the IRS. Send the request to:

Include the tax period, your EIN, and the VINs you need copies for.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 This is a paper-only process, so it takes time. Keeping a digital backup of an e-filed Schedule 1, or a photocopy of the stamped paper version, saves that wait the next time you need to hand one over.
Suspended Vehicles Still Get a Schedule 1
A vehicle you expect to drive 5,000 miles or fewer on public highways during the tax period (7,500 for agricultural vehicles) qualifies for a tax suspension. You owe no HVUT on it, but you still have to file Form 2290 and list the vehicle on Schedule 1 under Category W.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025) The stamped Schedule 1 you get back showing Category W is your proof of compliance for that vehicle at the DMV.
If the vehicle later exceeds the mileage limit, you have to file an amended return and pay the full tax for the remaining months, due by the last day of the month after the month the limit was crossed.1Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290
