The IRS Direct Data Exchange on the FAFSA is an automatic, real-time transfer of your federal tax information from the IRS into the Free Application for Federal Student Aid. For the 2026–2027 cycle, it pulls figures from your 2024 Form 1040 and drops them straight into the form after you approve the transfer.1Internal Revenue Service. Tax Information for Federal Student Aid Applications Every person contributing to the application must give that approval separately, and if any one of them refuses, the student loses eligibility for federal aid entirely.
How the Transfer Works
You fill out the FAFSA on StudentAid.gov, approve the data transfer inside your section of the form, and the system retrieves your tax information from the IRS in the background. You are never redirected to an IRS site.1Internal Revenue Service. Tax Information for Federal Student Aid Applications
Once your data is imported, the dollar figures stay masked on screen. You cannot see them and you cannot edit them.2Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Verification, Updates, and Corrections When you submit, the Department of Education receives the full set of figures and forwards the relevant portions to the financial aid offices at the schools you listed.1Internal Revenue Service. Every Contributor Has to Consent
A contributor is anyone required to provide financial information on the form: the student, and, depending on dependency status, one or both parents or a spouse. Each contributor gives consent inside their own section of the FAFSA. Consent is required from every contributor even if that person did not file a tax return.3Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Checklist: What Students Need
If any contributor declines to approve the transfer, the student becomes ineligible for all federal student aid: Pell Grants, federal student loans, and work-study.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form The effects usually reach further than that, because many states and colleges use the FAFSA to award their own grants and scholarships, so a missing consent can cut off state and institutional aid too. There is no manual workaround. You cannot type in the tax figures yourself to bypass the requirement. The student stays ineligible until every contributor approves. If a parent is uncooperative or estranged, talk to the school’s financial aid office right away.
Setting Up the Account You Need to Consent
Before you can approve the transfer, you need a StudentAid.gov account (sometimes called an FSA ID), which acts as your digital signature. The account requires identity verification, so build in a few days before you plan to start the FAFSA. Your legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number have to match Social Security Administration records.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form If you aren’t sure what’s on your return, you can request a tax transcript from the IRS to check your filing status and address.5Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
Contributors Without a Social Security Number
A contributor without an SSN, such as a parent who is an undocumented immigrant, can still complete their section of the FAFSA. During account creation, they attest that they don’t have an SSN, and the SSN field is left blank.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form The Department of Education is rolling out a secure manual identity verification system for these contributors for the 2026–2027 cycle.6Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. Update Regarding StudentAid.gov Account Creation for Individuals Without a Social Security Number Contributors with an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number should enter it in the ITIN field so the system can locate any tax records.
When the Automated Transfer Doesn’t Apply
Most contributors will have their tax data transferred automatically. A few groups won’t.
Non-Filers
If your income fell below the filing threshold ($14,600 for single filers for the 2024 tax year) and you didn’t file, you still go through the consent process. The system asks the IRS and confirms no return was found, which verifies your non-filer status for the Department of Education.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form
Foreign and Territory Filers
The exchange only reaches the IRS. If you filed only with a foreign tax authority, convert your income to U.S. dollars and enter it manually in the comparable FAFSA fields. Residents of Puerto Rico or other U.S. territories who filed with their local tax authority instead of the IRS face the same limitation: only IRS Form 1040 data can be imported.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form A Puerto Rico resident who files with both the IRS and the local authority will see only the IRS return imported, with no way to add the local return.
Amended Returns and Divorce
The exchange transfers data from the original return only, not from an amended return on Form 1040-X. If you amended, you’ll usually need to give your school’s financial aid office both the original return transcript and a copy of the 1040-X. Contributors who filed a joint return but are now divorced also fall outside the automated transfer and must enter their individual income figures by hand.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form
IRS Identity Theft
If your IRS records are locked because of tax-related identity theft, the exchange cannot retrieve your data. Provide a copy of your signed tax return along with either IRS Letter 4674C acknowledging the identity theft or a signed statement confirming you were a victim and the IRS knows about it.7Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2025-2026 Award Year: FAFSA Information to be Verified and Acceptable Documentation
What Actually Gets Transferred
The exchange sends specific line items from the 2024 Form 1040 that feed into the Student Aid Index calculation. The core figure is Adjusted Gross Income from line 11. Also transferred: total income tax paid (line 24), filing status, and the number of dependents claimed. If no return was filed, the IRS reports that fact rather than sending blank fields.
The transfer also carries tax-exempt interest income, the taxable and nontaxable portions of IRA and pension distributions, and education tax credits (American Opportunity Tax Credit, Lifetime Learning Credit) so the formula can account for tax benefits the family already received.
What You Still Enter By Hand
Several items don’t come across through the exchange:
- Foreign earned income exclusion claimed on Schedule 1, line 8d.8Federal Student Aid. Foreign Earned Income Exclusion
- IRA and pension rollovers into another IRA or qualified plan, from lines 4 and 5 of Form 1040.
- The taxable portion of grants and scholarships reported on your return.
- Earned income credit received, from line 27 of Form 1040.
Assets are fully self-reported and never come from the IRS. For the 2026–2027 cycle, you must report the net worth of family businesses with more than 100 full-time employees and any farm the family doesn’t live on. Smaller businesses (100 or fewer employees), family farms you live on, and family-owned commercial fishing operations are excluded from asset reporting.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form Family size is also answered separately on the form based on who lives with you and whom you’ll support for more than half of the coming school year; unborn children aren’t included.9Federal Student Aid. Who Is Included in the Family Size?
Why Using the Exchange Helps at Verification Time
Tax data pulled through the exchange counts as verified. If your FAFSA is selected for verification, the school does not need to request additional documentation for the financial items the IRS already provided.10Federal Student Aid. 2025-2026 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Verification, Updates, and Corrections Other elements like household size or enrollment status may still need documentation, but the income and tax figures from the IRS are treated as settled. Manually entered tax data isn’t considered verified and is more likely to trigger documentation requests if you’re selected for review.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form
When 2024 Income No Longer Reflects Reality
The 2026–2027 FAFSA uses 2024 tax data, so there is a built-in lag. If your family’s finances have changed sharply since 2024 through job loss, divorce, disability, or a major income drop, the transferred figures won’t show your current situation. Contact your school’s financial aid office and ask about a professional judgment review.
Financial aid administrators can adjust your Student Aid Index case by case when circumstances warrant. They can change the income figures used in the calculation, but they need documentation: pay stubs, a termination letter, or other evidence. Schools must have written policies for these requests and must resolve conflicting information before adjusting anything.11Federal Student Aid Knowledge Center. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Special Cases The administrator’s decision is final and cannot be appealed to the Department of Education, so put together thorough documentation the first time.
Administrators can’t reduce income for routine living expenses like credit card bills, utilities, or vacations, and they can’t alter the federal formula itself. Professional judgment is meant for genuine hardship, where family income is nothing like what it was two years ago.
How the Data Can Be Used
Tax information the Department of Education receives through the exchange is governed by stricter rules than the standard student privacy law (FERPA). It can only be used to award and administer federal student aid under Title IV of the Higher Education Act. It cannot be used for research, even with your consent, and cannot be repurposed for non-aid programs like TRIO services or general campus resources.12Federal Student Aid Partners. Data Use and Considerations Under the FUTURE Act and FAFSA Simplification Act The Department may share it with your college’s financial aid office, state higher education agencies, and certain designated scholarship organizations, but only for aid administration. Contractors handling the data on behalf of those entities can’t use it for anything else.
2026–2027 Timing
The 2026–2027 FAFSA opened on September 24, 2025, the earliest launch in the program’s history.13U.S. Department of Education. U.S. Department of Education Announces Earliest FAFSA Form Launch in Program History The federal deadline to submit is June 30, 2027.14USAGov. Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) That federal deadline is generous, but state grant programs and individual colleges often have far earlier priority deadlines, many falling between March and June of 2026. Filing close to the October opening gives you the best shot at first-come, first-served state and institutional aid. Since the exchange pulls from your 2024 return, you have everything you need once those taxes are filed.4Federal Student Aid. 2026-2027 Federal Student Aid Handbook – Filling Out the FAFSA Form
