A CP53E notice from the IRS means your tax refund could not be direct deposited into the bank account you listed on your return, and the IRS is giving you 30 days to log into your IRS Online Account and enter new bank details before it defaults to mailing you a paper check. You get one chance to fix the account information. If the second deposit also fails, or if you ignore the notice, a paper check goes out automatically.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53E Notice
Why the Deposit Was Rejected
Banks bounce refund deposits for a small set of reasons, and knowing which one applies to you determines how to fix it.
- The account was closed or inactive. If you closed the account after filing, the bank has nowhere to route the money and returns it.
- A routing or account number was wrong. A single wrong digit can fail the IRS’s validation check or get bounced by the receiving bank.
- The name on the return didn’t match the name on the account. This often happens when a joint refund is sent to an individual account, or when the return uses a married name but the account still uses a maiden name.
- The three-deposit limit was exceeded. The IRS caps electronic refunds at three per bank account or prepaid debit card. A fourth automatically converts to a paper check.
One important boundary: if a mistyped account number happens to be valid and belongs to someone else, and their bank accepts the deposit, the IRS considers your refund delivered. It will not reissue it. Recovering the money means dealing with the receiving bank directly.2Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries 18
How to Respond Within the 30-Day Window
Log into your IRS Online Account and submit a corrected account number and routing number. That is the only path. IRS phone representatives cannot update banking information for you. After you submit, allow two to five days for your refund status to update online.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53E Notice
You get exactly one attempt. If the second direct deposit also fails, the IRS will not try a third time. It will issue a paper check. So double-check the numbers against a source you trust, like a check or a statement from the bank, before submitting.
If you’d rather just take the paper check, you don’t have to do anything. Six weeks after the notice date, the IRS will automatically mail one to the address on your most recent return.1Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP53E Notice
Update Your Address Before a Check Ships
A paper check goes to the address on your last processed return. If you’ve moved, correct that first. You can file Form 8822, send a signed letter with your full name, old address, new address, and Social Security number, or call the IRS at 800-829-1040. Allow four to six weeks for the change to fully process.3Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes
A USPS forwarding order is not a substitute. Not every post office forwards government checks, and the IRS specifically warns that you should notify it directly even if you’ve filed a forwarding request.3Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes
Tracking the Refund After You Respond
Use the “Where’s My Refund?” tool at irs.gov/refunds or the IRS2Go app to watch progress. You’ll need your Social Security number or ITIN, your filing status, and the exact whole-dollar refund amount from your return. The tool moves through three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved, and Refund Sent.4Internal Revenue Service. Refunds
Once the status flips to “Refund Sent” for a paper check, standard mail delivery usually takes one to two weeks from that date.5Internal Revenue Service. How Taxpayers Can Check the Status of Their Federal Tax Refund
If the Paper Check Never Arrives
When a reasonable amount of time has passed after the “Refund Sent” date and nothing has come, you can request a refund trace. Call 800-829-1954 to use the automated system, call 800-829-1040 to reach a representative, or file Form 3911 (Taxpayer Statement Regarding Refund) by mail or fax.6Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries
Joint filers can’t start a trace through the automated line. You’ll need to speak with a live representative or mail in Form 3911.6Internal Revenue Service. Refund Inquiries
The trace asks the Bureau of the Fiscal Service to determine whether the check was cashed, returned as undeliverable, or is still moving. If the check was never cashed, it gets canceled and a replacement issued.
If the Check Was Cashed by Someone Else
When a trace shows the check was cashed and you didn’t cash it, the case becomes a forgery claim. The Bureau of the Fiscal Service will send you a claims package with FS Form 1133 (Claim Against the United States for the Proceeds of a Government Check). Complete both sides, sign it, and return it within four months.7Internal Revenue Service. Refund Trace and Limited Payability
The IRS compares the endorsement on the cashed check against your signature. You may be asked for additional samples, a police report, or bank statements. A separate form, Form 13818, applies to checks more than a year old, with shorter deadlines: 45 days domestic, 70 days overseas.7Internal Revenue Service. Refund Trace and Limited Payability
There’s a hard outer deadline: a forgery claim must reach the IRS within one year of the check’s original issue date. After that, your options narrow sharply.8U.S. Department of the Treasury. Chapter 7000 – Cancellations, Deposits, Reclamations, and Claims for Checks Drawn on the U.S. Treasury
When the Delay Is Causing Financial Hardship
The Taxpayer Advocate Service is an independent organization inside the IRS that helps when a tax issue is causing real financial harm. If a missing refund means you can’t pay rent, cover utilities, buy food, or get to work, or if the delay is damaging your credit, you may qualify for TAS help.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Can TAS Help Me With My Tax Issue
To ask for help, submit Form 911. On Line 12a, describe the refund problem and the hardship, and include the date you first contacted the IRS if it’s been more than 30 days. You can mail the form to 7940 Kentucky Dr, MS 11 G, Florence, KY 41042, fax it to 855-828-2723, or email it to tas.form.911.request.for.assistance@irs.gov. If you don’t hear back within 30 days, call 877-777-4778.10Internal Revenue Service. Request for Taxpayer Advocate Service Assistance (Form 911)
Interest You May Be Owed
The IRS has 45 days from your filing deadline, or from the date you actually filed if that was later, to send your refund without owing interest. Past that, it must pay interest at a rate that adjusts quarterly. A failed direct deposit followed by a slow paper check reissuance can easily push you past the 45-day mark, and any interest owed is added to your refund automatically when it finally arrives.11Internal Revenue Service.
