IRS Confirmation Number: Acceptance, Timestamp, Where to Find It

An IRS confirmation number is the alphanumeric code the IRS sends back through your e-file provider to prove your electronic return or payment was received and passed the agency’s initial validation checks. It carries a timestamp, and that timestamp is what the IRS uses to decide whether you filed on time. Treat it as your receipt and your evidence, not as a sign that your return has been reviewed or approved.

Transmission Confirmation vs. Acceptance Confirmation

E-filing actually produces two separate codes, and mixing them up is where taxpayers get into trouble.

The first is a transmission confirmation. It means your tax software packaged your data and sent it to the IRS gateway. The data left your computer. That’s all it proves.

The second is the acceptance confirmation, and this is the one that matters. Within about 24 hours of receiving your return, the IRS Modernized e-File (MeF) system runs automated checks on format, structure, and identifying numbers. If the return passes, an accepted acknowledgment comes back through your e-file provider. If it fails, you get a rejection with specific error codes instead.1Internal Revenue Service. Electronic Communication Between IRS and Transmitters During the MeF E-File Process

Until you have the acceptance code, your return is not filed in the eyes of the IRS, no matter what your software screen says.

What Acceptance Does Not Mean

An acceptance confirmation is not approval. It does not mean the IRS reviewed your deductions, agreed with your refund amount, or cleared you of an audit. It means the return was formatted correctly and your identifying information matched IRS records. Math checks, cross-referencing against employer-reported income, and any adjustments to your refund happen after this stage. Taxpayers who read acceptance as approval sometimes miss later notices asking for more information or reporting changes.

The same distinction applies to payments. A Direct Pay or EFTPS confirmation number proves the payment request was submitted, not that the money actually cleared your bank. Check your bank statement or your IRS account at least 48 hours after the scheduled payment date to verify the debit.2Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help

Where to Find Your Confirmation Number

Where the number lives depends on how you filed or paid.

Tax Software

Commercial software stores the code inside the program, usually under a section labeled something like Filing History or E-file Status. Most providers also email the acceptance code once the IRS acknowledgment comes back. Check your spam folder before you assume it never arrived. These emails get filtered more often than you’d expect.

A Paid Preparer

If someone else filed for you, they received the acceptance acknowledgment through their e-file software. Ask for a printed or digital copy. The IRS system generates the code, but it comes back to you through whichever authorized e-file provider transmitted the return.

IRS Direct Pay

Direct Pay issues a confirmation number for each payment.3Internal Revenue Service. Pay Personal Taxes From Your Bank Account Save it at the moment of payment. If you close the browser without recording it, retrieving it later is difficult.

EFTPS

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System issues an EFT Acknowledgment Number for each payment entered.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 966 Electronic Federal Tax Payment System A Guide to Getting Started Record it immediately. It’s your reference if you ever need to research the payment.

Why the Timestamp Matters

For an electronically filed return, the date and time of transmission in your time zone controls whether the return is considered timely.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 301, When, How and Where to File For tax year 2025 individual returns, the deadline is April 15, 2026.6Internal Revenue Service. When to File Your confirmation number is proof you beat that clock.

Under IRC Section 7502, the transmission timestamp from an authorized e-file transmitter functions as your electronic postmark.7GovInfo. 26 USC 7502 Documents submitted outside the e-file system, by fax, email, or upload through an IRS portal, are treated differently. Those can be considered late if the IRS doesn’t receive them by the due date, even if you have a confirmation showing when you sent them.

If Your Return Is Rejected After Transmission

A return can get a transmission confirmation and still be rejected hours later when MeF runs its checks. Your software will show a rejection code identifying the error instead of an acceptance code.

The most common cause is an incorrect prior-year Adjusted Gross Income. The IRS uses that figure as identity verification for your electronic signature, and a mismatch bounces the return. Wrong Social Security numbers and duplicate dependent claims are the next most common.

Open the return, correct the flagged field, and retransmit. For an AGI mismatch, you can pull the exact figure from your IRS online account under Tax Records, or request a transcript by mail by calling 800-908-9946.8Internal Revenue Service. The Perfection Period

If your Form 1040 was transmitted on or before the due date but rejected, you have five calendar days after the deadline to retransmit a corrected version and still be treated as timely. For tax year 2025 returns filed by April 15, 2026, that puts the retransmission cutoff at April 20, 2026.9Internal Revenue Service. IRM 3.42.5 IRS E-File of Individual Income Tax Returns

If you can’t fix the electronic version in that window, file on paper. For the paper return to count as timely, the postmark must be the later of the original due date or ten calendar days after the IRS rejection notice. Attach a copy of the rejection notification, write “Rejected Electronic Return” with the date in red at the top of the first page, and sign before mailing.10Internal Revenue Service. Business returns on Forms 1041, 1120, 1065, and 990 get a longer window of ten calendar days from the rejection date. Extensions of all types have a five-day perfection period from the rejection date.

If You Lost Your Confirmation Number

Start with your tax software. Most programs retain filing history from prior years for as long as your account stays active. Then search your email, including spam, for the confirmation message your provider sent when the return was accepted.

If neither turns anything up, sign in to your IRS online account. The Tax Records tab shows key return information and lets you download transcripts.11Internal Revenue Service. Online Account for Individuals A tax return transcript won’t display the original confirmation number, but it confirms the IRS received and processed a return for that year, which is what the confirmation number was proving in the first place. Transcripts are also available by mail using Form 4506-T or by calling 800-908-9946.12Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Services for Individuals – FAQs

How Long to Keep It

Treat the confirmation number as part of your permanent tax records for that year. The IRS generally has three years from your filing date to assess additional tax, six years if you underreported income by more than 25% of gross income, and no time limit at all for a fraudulent return or a return that was never filed.13Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 305, Recordkeeping Keeping the number for at least seven years covers almost every realistic scenario. Store it digitally alongside a copy of the return.

What the number protects you from is concrete. The late-filing penalty is 5% of unpaid tax per month or partial month, up to 25%.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 For returns required to be filed in 2026, if a return is more than 60 days late, the minimum penalty is the lesser of $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax.15Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges If the IRS ever claims you didn’t file, the acceptance confirmation with its timestamp is the evidence that closes the argument.
