IRS Business Hours: Phone Lines, Offices, and 2026 Holidays

IRS business hours are Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time on every phone line the agency runs for individuals, businesses, and tax professionals. Taxpayer Assistance Centers keep shorter weekday hours of 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. by appointment only, and most tools on IRS.gov stay available around the clock apart from short maintenance windows.1Internal Revenue Service. Phone Hours by Line

The main number for individual tax questions is 800-829-1040. Representatives handle return questions, refund inquiries, notice explanations, payment options, and account adjustments, weekdays from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time.1Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You

Time Zone Exceptions

Alaska and Hawaii callers follow Pacific time rather than their own local clock. Puerto Rico callers reach the same lines from 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. local time.1Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You

Best Times to Call

Hold times climb sharply from late January through mid-April. Calling right at 7:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m. usually gets you through faster. When the system estimates a wait over about 15 minutes, it offers a callback: you hang up and receive a return call without losing your place in line. Have your Social Security number, any notices you received, and a copy of your most recent return in front of you before dialing.

Language Assistance

For Spanish, dial 800-829-1040 and the system routes you to a bilingual representative or connects an interpreter. For other languages, an IRS assistor can bring a professional interpreter onto the call at no charge.1Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You

In-Person Office Hours

IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers operate Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. local time. Every visit requires an appointment, and walk-ins are turned away. Book by calling 844-545-5640; the representative first checks whether your issue actually needs an in-person visit before scheduling.3Internal Revenue Service.
