The IRS amended return processing time runs 8 to 12 weeks in most cases, and up to 16 weeks when a paper filing, a complication, or a specialized review is involved.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return The clock starts when the IRS receives your Form 1040-X, not the day you send it. E-filing shaves off a week or two of mail transit, but the review itself takes the same amount of time either way.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions
Why It Takes Months, Not Weeks
Original returns move through automated systems that process millions of filings at once. Amended returns don’t. An IRS employee has to pull up your original return, compare it against the changes you’re requesting, verify your documentation, and manually adjust your account. That human review is the bottleneck, and it applies whether you e-filed or mailed in paper.
E-filing still helps at the margins. It skips the transit, sorting, and keying steps, which the IRS estimates saves one to two weeks.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions The core 8-to-12-week review happens once your form reaches the queue. Paper filers should plan around the full 16-week window as a realistic expectation.
How to Check the Status of Your Amended Return
The IRS runs a dedicated “Where’s My Amended Return?” tool. You log in with your Social Security number, date of birth, and ZIP code.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Don’t check too early. Your return won’t appear until about three weeks after you submit it.3Internal Revenue Service. How Long Does the IRS Take to Process an Amended Return
The tool reports your return in one of three stages:
- Received. The IRS has your Form 1040-X but hasn’t started reviewing it.
- Adjusted. The IRS has reviewed the form and made changes to your account. That may mean a refund, a balance due, or no net change.
- Completed. Processing is finished and a notice is on its way with the final details.
The tool covers the current tax year and the three prior years. Some returns never show up there at all: amendments with a foreign address, carryback claims, injured spouse claims, and returns being handled by specialized units such as Examination or Bankruptcy.1Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return Corrections submitted on a regular Form 1040 instead of Form 1040-X also won’t appear.
What Makes an Amended Return Take Longer
The 16-week window builds in some slack, but plenty of returns overrun it. The most preventable cause is an incomplete filing. A missing signature, an omitted schedule, or a blank field the IRS needs filled in triggers a letter asking for the missing piece, and the clock effectively stops until you respond.
Amendments that touch complex areas of the tax code get routed to specialized teams. Business income adjustments, foreign tax credits, and changes involving pass-through entities fall into that bucket. Both the handoff and the specialized review add time.
If your original return was flagged for identity theft or fraud, your amendment gets extra scrutiny. The IRS won’t adjust your account until it’s confident the amendment is legitimate, and that verification runs on its own schedule.
Filing a second amended return while the first is still pending is one of the worst things you can do for your wait time. The IRS essentially starts over to reconcile both versions. If you catch an error on your 1040-X, wait until the first one finishes before filing a correction.
When to Call the IRS
Hold off on calling until the Where’s My Amended Return tool tells you to, or until more than 16 weeks have passed since you mailed a paper return.4Internal Revenue Service. Let Us Help You Calling earlier doesn’t get you anything. The representative will see what the tool shows and nothing more.
The number for amended return inquiries is 866-464-2050.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 308 – Amended Returns Have your original return, your Form 1040-X, and the exact date you filed in front of you. A specific filing date helps the representative locate your record faster than a general timeframe will.
What Arrives When Processing Finishes
You’ll receive a notice spelling out what changed on your account: adjustments to income, deductions, and credits, and the resulting effect on your tax or refund.
If You’re Getting a Refund
Refunds from amended returns can now be direct deposited if you e-filed the 1040-X and entered your bank information on the form.2Internal Revenue Service. Amended Return Frequently Asked Questions Paper-filed amendments still produce a paper check mailed to the address on file.
You may also be owed interest on top of the refund. Interest on overpayments generally runs from the original due date of the return (or your filing date, if later) until the IRS issues the refund.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6611 – Interest on Overpayments The IRS gets a 45-day administrative window to pay refunds without owing interest, but amended returns almost always blow past that window, so interest typically accrues.7Internal Revenue Service. Interest For the first quarter of 2026, the overpayment rate for individuals is 7%, dropping to 6% for the second quarter.8Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8 Rates adjust quarterly.
If You Owe Additional Tax
When the amendment increases your liability, the notice includes a bill. Interest on the underpayment runs from the original due date of the return, not from the date you filed the amendment, until you pay in full.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653 – IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges The underpayment rate for Q2 2026 is 6% per year, compounded daily.8Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8
A failure-to-pay penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax also applies for each month or partial month the balance stays open, capping at 25%.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax Don’t put your own interest or penalty figures on the 1040-X. The IRS calculates those separately and adds them to the bill.5Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 308 – Amended Returns
Don’t Overlook Your State Return
A federal amendment that changes your adjusted gross income, deductions, or credits almost always affects your state tax too. Most states with an income tax require an amended state return after a federal change, typically within 90 to 180 days of the federal adjustment becoming final. The deadline and filing rules vary by state, so check your state tax agency’s website once you’ve sent in the federal 1040-X. Missing the state deadline can result in penalties and interest on any additional state tax owed.
