Instant Checkmate Charge on Credit Card: Cancel, Refund, or Dispute

An Instant Checkmate charge on your credit card is almost always a background-check subscription, typically $35.47 per month, that started as a $1 five-day trial and converted automatically when you didn’t cancel in time. You can stop it by canceling the subscription, asking the company for a refund, and, if that fails, disputing the charge with your bank under the Fair Credit Billing Act.

How the Charge Shows Up on Your Statement

Banks shorten merchant names in different ways, so the line item rarely reads “Instant Checkmate” cleanly. Common variations include CHKMATE*INSTANTCHECKMATE, CHKMATE*INSTANT CHECKMA, CHKMATE*INSTANTCHECK, and CHKMATE*INSTANT. If you bought a phone-lookup add-on, it may appear as CHKMATE*PHONESERVICES.1Instant Checkmate. How Does Instant Checkmate Bill You? Here’s What To Look For

If none of those descriptors jog your memory, search your inbox for a welcome email from Instant Checkmate or its parent company, PeopleConnect. That message has your member ID and sign-up date, and you’ll need both to cancel or dispute.

Why the Amount Looks the Way It Does

Instant Checkmate runs on negative-option billing: you sign up for a five-day trial at $1, and unless you cancel before day five, the account converts to a recurring $35.47 monthly charge that hits every 30 days until you stop it.2Instant Checkmate. $1 Background Check – Instant Checkmate Trial

A quarterly plan bills $85.13 upfront and works out to $28.38 per month. Add-ons can show as separate lines: downloadable PDF reports at $3.99 each, phone-number lookups at $5.99 per month, and dark-web monitoring at $1.99 per month. That’s why a single account can produce three or four Instant Checkmate charges in one cycle.3Instant Checkmate. Pricing and Membership Information

How to Cancel the Subscription

Before you contact the company, have three things ready: the email address on the account, your member ID from the welcome email, and the last four digits of the card being billed. Support won’t move without them.

You have two options:

  • Online. Log in, open Account Settings, and find the cancellation link in the help center or page footer. You’ll pick a reason from a dropdown and click through several confirmation screens, including retention offers. Keep going until you see a final cancellation confirmation.
  • Phone. Call (800) 222-8985 during business hours. A representative verifies your identity, processes the cancellation, and gives you a verbal confirmation code.4Instant Checkmate. Instant Checkmate Help Center and FAQs

Ask for a confirmation email either way. That email is your evidence if billing continues. The account status usually updates within 24 to 48 hours, so check your account and the next statement to confirm the charges have actually stopped.

Asking Instant Checkmate for a Refund

Once the account is canceled, request a refund through the same phone number or the billing inquiry form on the site. Be specific: give the sign-up date, say you didn’t intend to authorize recurring charges, and list the exact amounts you want returned. The terms of service generally treat fees as non-refundable once you’ve viewed report data, but the company does make exceptions, especially for charges billed after a cancellation request or where the trial conversion wasn’t clearly disclosed.

If a refund is approved, it typically posts in five to ten business days. Save every email and confirmation code. If the company says no, your bank is the next step, and it’s often the more effective one anyway.

Disputing the Charge With Your Bank

The Fair Credit Billing Act gives you 60 days from the date your card issuer sends the statement containing the charge to file a written billing-error notice. The notice must include your name and account number, the charge and amount you’re disputing, and why you believe it’s an error.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1666 – Correction of Billing Errors

After the bank receives your dispute, it must acknowledge it within 30 days and resolve the investigation within two billing cycles, and no longer than 90 days. It cannot try to collect the disputed amount or report it as delinquent while the investigation is open. Send the letter to the billing-inquiries address your issuer designates, not the general payment address, and use certified mail with return receipt requested.

Most people skip the letter and use the dispute line or the dispute feature in their banking app. That works, though a written notice gives you stronger statutory protection. The categories that fit an Instant Checkmate dispute are canceled recurring transaction, if you already canceled and were still billed, and misrepresentation of terms, if the trial-to-subscription conversion wasn’t clearly disclosed. Visa and Mastercard both allow up to 120 days to file chargebacks for canceled recurring subscriptions, which is more generous than the 60-day statutory floor.

Federal Laws Backing You Up

The Restore Online Shoppers’ Confidence Act makes it illegal for an online seller to bill you through a negative-option feature unless it clearly discloses all material terms before taking your billing information, obtains express informed consent, and provides a simple way to stop recurring charges.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 8403 – Negative Option Marketing on the Internet If the trial terms were buried or the conversion wasn’t clear, that’s a potential violation you can cite in your dispute.

The FTC’s Click-to-Cancel rule, finalized in late 2024, requires subscription sellers to make cancellation as easy as sign-up. It also helps to know that in September 2023, the FTC charged Instant Checkmate and its sister company TruthFinder with deceiving consumers and violating the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and the companies paid a $5.8 million penalty to settle.8Federal Trade Commission. FTC Says TruthFinder, Instant Checkmate Deceived Users About Background Report Accuracy, Violated FCRA A documented enforcement history strengthens your footing if a bank asks why you believe the charge was unauthorized or misleading.

One Boundary Worth Knowing

Instant Checkmate is not a consumer reporting agency under the FCRA, and users must agree before searching that they won’t use results to make decisions about hiring, renting property, extending credit, underwriting insurance, or determining anyone’s eligibility.4Instant Checkmate. Instant Checkmate Help Center and FAQs If that’s what you signed up hoping to do, the subscription won’t lawfully serve that purpose, and canceling is the right call for reasons beyond the bill.
