Instacart tax deductions fall into a handful of categories that every shopper should know: vehicle expenses, phone and technology costs, supplies and equipment, self-employed health insurance premiums, half of your self-employment tax, and the qualified business income deduction worth up to 20% of your net profit. Business costs go on Schedule C and reduce both your income tax and your self-employment tax. Health insurance, half of SE tax, and the QBI deduction come off later on your Form 1040 and reduce only income tax. Track the expenses as they happen, and the write-offs usually add up to thousands.
Vehicle Expenses
Driving is the core of the work, and for most shoppers the vehicle deduction is larger than everything else combined. The IRS gives you two methods, and you pick one per vehicle per year.
Standard Mileage Rate
Multiply your business miles by the IRS rate. For 2026, that rate is 72.5 cents per mile.1Internal Revenue Service. Standard Mileage Rates Updated for 2026 The rate already covers fuel, insurance, depreciation, maintenance, and wear, so you don’t deduct those separately. Fifteen thousand business miles equals a $10,875 deduction, no gas receipts required.
This method works best with a fuel-efficient car and ordinary repair costs. You have to choose it in the first year you use the vehicle for business. If you lease, you’re locked into whichever method you pick for the full lease period.2Internal Revenue Service. Income and Expenses 5
Actual Expenses
Add up what you actually spent: gas, oil, tires, repairs, insurance, registration, and depreciation or lease payments. Then multiply by your business-use percentage. Drive 20,000 miles total with 12,000 for Instacart, and 60% of those costs are deductible.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 510 Business Use of Car This method tends to win with older vehicles that need frequent repairs or expensive insurance, but you need receipts for everything and the depreciation math gets involved.
Parking and Tolls
Business parking and tolls are deductible on top of either method.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 510 Business Use of Car A paid lot at a grocery store during an order counts. Parking at home does not.
Phone and Technology
You can’t shop without a smartphone, so the business portion of your phone bill is deductible. If roughly 60% of your usage is the Instacart app, navigation, and customer messages, deduct 60% of the monthly bill. The same split applies to data plan upgrades you need to stay connected on the road.
Items bought only for the work are fully deductible: dashboard mounts, car chargers, phone holders, and a case you bought because the job beats up your phone. These qualify as ordinary and necessary business expenses under federal tax law.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 162 – Trade or Business Expenses
Supplies and Small Business Costs
Insulated bags and coolers that keep groceries at temperature during delivery are deductible. So are hand sanitizer, interior cleaning wipes, and masks you bought for use on the job. Other write-offs shoppers commonly miss:
- Background check fees you paid out of pocket to join the platform, deductible in the year you paid.
- The business-use percentage of a roadside assistance membership like AAA.
- High-visibility vests or reflective gear worn during deliveries.
- Reusable shopping bags bought for batch orders.
The test is whether the expense is ordinary in the delivery business and necessary for earning income. One insulated bag won’t change your tax bill, but a year of these small purchases can knock several hundred dollars off taxable income.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 162 – Trade or Business Expenses
Self-Employed Health Insurance
If you pay for your own health, dental, or vision coverage and you aren’t eligible for a subsidized plan through a spouse or other employer, you can deduct 100% of the premiums for yourself, your spouse, and your dependents.5Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 7206
Eligibility is tested month by month. If your spouse started a job with employer coverage in July, you can still deduct January through June. This one goes on Schedule 1 of Form 1040, not Schedule C, so it reduces your adjusted gross income but does not reduce the amount subject to self-employment tax.
The Qualified Business Income Deduction
Sole proprietors, including gig workers, may deduct up to 20% of their net business income under the qualified business income deduction.6Internal Revenue Service. Qualified Business Income Deduction It was originally set to expire after 2025 but has been extended into 2026. It’s taken on your personal return rather than Schedule C, and you can claim it whether you take the standard deduction or itemize.
For 2026, single filers under $201,750 of taxable income and joint filers under $403,500 generally get the full 20% without extra limitations. If your Schedule C net profit is $30,000, QBI knocks another $6,000 off taxable income. A lot of shoppers never claim it because they don’t know it applies to them.
Half of Your Self-Employment Tax
Self-employment tax is 15.3% of net earnings: 12.4% for Social Security and 2.9% for Medicare.7Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) The Social Security portion only applies to earnings up to $184,500 in 2026,8Social Security Administration. Maximum Taxable Earnings which most shoppers won’t hit, so the full rate usually applies.
You get to deduct half of what you owe. The calculation sits on Schedule SE and the deduction flows to Schedule 1.9Internal Revenue Service. Topic No 554 Self-Employment Tax On $40,000 of net profit, SE tax runs about $5,652, and roughly $2,826 of that comes right back off taxable income.
Records That Hold Up
A deduction is only as good as the record behind it. The IRS wants documentation created at the time of the expense, not reconstructed later.
Mileage Logs
For the vehicle deduction, keep a log showing the date, destination, business purpose, and either odometer readings or distance for each trip.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 – Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses Apps like Stride, Everlance, and MileIQ track GPS automatically. A spreadsheet rebuilt in March from memory is exactly what the IRS throws out.
Sampling is allowed: keep a careful log for a representative stretch of the year and extrapolate, as long as the sample reflects your typical pattern.10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 463 – Travel, Gift, and Car Expenses Automated tracking is cheap enough that there’s little reason not to log every trip.
Receipts
For equipment and supplies, keep the receipt showing what you bought, when, and how much. Photos of paper receipts are fine. Sort them by category so tax season isn’t a scavenger hunt.
Where the Deductions Go on Your Return
Business expenses, including vehicle costs, phone, supplies, and equipment, go on Schedule C. The bottom line of Schedule C is your net profit, and that number flows to two places: your Form 1040 for income tax, and Schedule SE for self-employment tax.11Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Schedule C (Form 1040)12Internal Revenue Service. About Schedule SE (Form 1040) Self-Employment Tax
Health insurance premiums, half of self-employment tax, and the QBI deduction do not go on Schedule C. They come off further down the return on Schedule 1 and Form 1040, which means they reduce your income tax but do not reduce what you owe for Social Security and Medicare. That distinction matters when you’re estimating how much to set aside: every dollar of Schedule C expense saves you both income tax and the 15.3% SE tax, while the later deductions save income tax only.
