For the 2025 tax year, your federal income tax return due date is Wednesday, April 15, 2026.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6072 – Time for Filing Income Tax Returns That one date carries two obligations most people don’t separate in their heads: it’s when your Form 1040 has to be filed, and it’s when any tax you owe has to be paid. The two have their own penalties, and missing either one starts the meter running immediately.
When April 15 Shifts to a Later Date
If April 15 lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday, the IRS moves the deadline to the next business day.2Internal Revenue Service. When to File Holidays observed in the District of Columbia count for this purpose nationally, which is why Emancipation Day (April 16 in D.C.) has bumped the tax deadline in past years when it collided with a weekend.
For 2026, none of that applies. April 15 is a Wednesday, Emancipation Day falls on Thursday the 16th, and the standard date holds.3Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 301, When, How and Where to File
If You Need More Time: Filing an Extension
Can’t finish the return by April 15? Submit Form 4868 before that date and you get an automatic six-month extension, pushing the filing deadline to October 15.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return The form asks you to estimate your total tax liability and note what you’ve already paid through withholding or estimated payments.
Here’s the trap. Form 4868 extends the time to file paperwork. It does not extend the time to pay. If you owe money and don’t send it in by April 15, interest and the late-payment penalty start accruing that day, extension or no extension.4Internal Revenue Service. Form 4868 – Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return The practical move is to estimate your bill, pay that estimate by April 15, and reconcile the difference when the completed return goes in by October.
Automatic Extensions Without Asking
Some taxpayers get extra time built in, no form required.
U.S. Citizens and Residents Abroad
If you live and work outside the United States and Puerto Rico on April 15, you get an automatic two-month extension to June 15 for both filing and payment. Attach a statement to the return explaining that you qualified. Interest still runs on any unpaid balance from April 15, so this eases the paperwork but not the cost of owing.5Internal Revenue Service. Military in Combat Zones
Service members deployed to a designated combat zone or contingency operation get filing and payment deadlines suspended for the entire deployment, plus 180 days after leaving. Whatever time was left on the clock before entering the zone gets added on top. Someone who deployed on April 1 with 14 days remaining before April 15 keeps those 14 days after the 180-day period ends.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 7508 – Time for Performing Certain Acts Postponed by Reason of Service in Combat Zone or Contingency Operation
Federally Declared Disaster Areas
After a presidential disaster declaration, the IRS automatically postpones filing and payment deadlines for affected taxpayers based on the address on file. No call, no form. Relief workers assisting in the area qualify too. The length varies. Taxpayers in parts of Washington state hit by storms and flooding in late 2025 had their deadlines pushed to May 1, 2026.7Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Estimated Tax Deadlines
If you earn income that doesn’t have taxes withheld (freelance work, rental income, investment gains), the IRS expects you to pay in as the year goes. The four quarterly due dates are:8Internal Revenue Service. Individuals – Estimated Tax
- First quarter (January–March): April 15
- Second quarter (April–May): June 15
- Third quarter (June–August): September 15
- Fourth quarter (September–December): January 15 of the following year
The quarters aren’t evenly split. The second covers two months, the third covers three. Weekend and holiday rules shift these dates the same way they shift April 15.
You can avoid the underpayment penalty by hitting a safe harbor: total payments covering at least 90% of your current-year tax, or at least 100% of the tax on your prior-year return (110% if your prior-year adjusted gross income exceeded $150,000, or $75,000 if married filing separately).9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax10Internal Revenue Service. Publication 505, Tax Withholding and Estimated Tax Owing less than $1,000 after withholding and credits also gets you off the hook.
What It Costs to Miss the Deadline
Two separate penalties, and they stack.
Late Filing
Owe tax and don’t file by the deadline (including any extension you properly requested)? The penalty is 5% of the unpaid tax for each month or partial month the return is late, capped at 25%.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax That cap is reached in five months. Once your return is more than 60 days late, a minimum penalty kicks in equal to the lesser of $525 or 100% of the unpaid tax.12Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 653, IRS Notices and Bills, Penalties and Interest Charges
Late Payment
Filing on time but not paying triggers a separate penalty of 0.5% of the unpaid tax per month, also capped at 25%.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax The rate drops to 0.25% per month while an IRS installment agreement is in effect. When both penalties apply in the same month, the filing penalty is reduced by the payment penalty so the combined rate stays at 5%, not 5.5%.
Interest
Interest runs on any unpaid balance from the original due date. The IRS resets the rate quarterly at the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points. The individual underpayment rate is 7% for the first quarter of 2026,13Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 dropping to 6% for the second quarter starting April 1, 2026.14Internal Revenue Service. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-8 Interest compounds daily. Unlike penalties, it can’t be waived for reasonable cause.
Filing late when you owe nothing costs nothing. Filing late when you owe $5,000 can run several hundred dollars within a few months. If you can’t pay the full balance, file anyway. The filing penalty alone is ten times the payment penalty rate.
State Returns Follow Their Own Rules
Most states with an income tax match the federal April 15 date, which lets you handle both at once. A few set later deadlines, and some local municipalities with their own earnings taxes run on entirely different calendars. Disaster relief at the federal level does not automatically move a state deadline. Check your state tax agency’s website during filing season; the answer is usually on the homepage.
Residents of the nine states without an individual income tax have no state return to file, but the federal April 15 obligation applies the same as everywhere else.
