Income protection insurance in the UK is a policy that pays you a regular, tax-free monthly income if illness or injury stops you working. It typically replaces between 50% and 70% of your gross earnings1MoneyHelper. What Is Income Protection Insurance and keeps paying until you recover, retire, or the policy term ends. For individual policies you pay for yourself from taxed income, the monthly benefit is free of UK income tax and National Insurance.2HMRC. Insurance Policyholder Taxation Manual IPTM6110
It is one of the few protection products that pays out repeatedly rather than once. You can claim as many times as you need over the life of the policy, which is the main structural difference between income protection and critical illness cover.3Legal & General. Critical Illness Cover v Income Protection
What Illness and Injuries It Covers
Income protection has no fixed list of covered conditions. It covers most illnesses and injuries that leave you unable to do your job, including musculoskeletal problems like back pain and broken bones, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, and serious diseases including cancer, heart disease, and stroke.4Compare the Market. What It Will Not Pay For
Income protection is designed for illness and injury, so it does not cover redundancy, dismissal, or voluntary unemployment.5Vitality. Income Protection Cover Beyond that, common exclusions include:
- Pre-existing medical conditions. Insurers may exclude them outright or load your premium to reflect the extra risk.1MoneyHelper. What Is Income Protection Insurance
- Non-disclosure. If you leave out medical history, lifestyle details, or dangerous hobbies on the application, the insurer can refuse a later claim entirely.6Citizens Advice. Income Protection Insurance

How Much of Your Income It Replaces
Most policies cap the benefit at 50% to 65% of gross income, with some insurers going up to 70%.1MoneyHelper. What Is Income Protection Insurance The figure is based on your earnings at the time you stop working, not what you earned when you took the policy out.8Legal & General. Income Protection Insurance
You can also choose index-linking, which raises the benefit each year in line with inflation (usually the Retail Price Index). This protects the real value of a long-running claim, but premiums tend to rise faster than the benefit itself, often by 1.5 to 2 times the inflation rate, because your age is rising at the same time.9Cavendish Online. Index Linked Income Protection How Does It Work A level benefit bought at 30 can lose significant purchasing power by your 50s or 60s.
The Deferred Period
Every policy has a deferred period: the time you have to be off work before benefit payments start. Standard options are 4, 8, 13, 26, or 52 weeks.10Guardian. Income Protection Shorter waits mean higher premiums, because short absences are far more common than long ones.11Cavendish Online. Income Protection Deferred Periods Explained
Most advisers suggest matching the deferred period to whatever sick pay you already receive. If your employer pays full salary for 26 weeks, a 26-week deferred period keeps premiums down without leaving a gap in your income.6Citizens Advice. Income Protection Insurance
Some insurers offer back-to-day-one cover. You still need to be off work for the full deferred period to trigger the claim, but payments are then backdated to the first day of absence. The feature typically adds about 10% to the premium and is most useful if you have no employer sick pay at all.12Drewberry Insurance. What Is Back to Day One Cover
How Long Payments Last
Policies come in two broad shapes. Long-term cover can keep paying until your chosen retirement age if you never recover enough to go back to work. Short-term cover caps each claim at a fixed length, commonly 12 months, 24 months, or 5 years.13Reassured. Income Protection Pay Out
Short-term is cheaper, but industry data suggests the average individual income protection claim runs for nearly seven years, which would exhaust most short-term policies.14Drewberry Insurance. What Is Payment Period for Income Protection Insurance
The Definition of Incapacity
The single most important clause in any policy is its definition of incapacity. It sets the test you have to meet before the insurer will pay. There are three main definitions:
- Own occupation. Pays if you cannot perform the specific duties of your own job. The broadest definition and the easiest to claim against.1MoneyHelper. What Is Income Protection Insurance
- Suited occupation. The insurer can decline a claim if you could reasonably do a different job matched to your skills, qualifications, and experience.15Unum. Income Protection
- Activities of daily living (or work tasks). The most restrictive. It usually pays only if you cannot perform a set number of basic physical tasks such as walking, bending, or climbing. It is generally reserved for high-risk or manual roles that cannot get own-occupation cover.16Aviva. Self-Employed Income Protection
Own occupation is not always available. Insurers may refuse it for professions like construction, professional sport, or the military, leaving a suited-occupation or work-tasks definition as the only option.17Drewberry Insurance. Own Suited Any Occupation Income Protection Own occupation also costs more, because it pays out more often.
What It Costs
Premiums depend on your age, occupation, health, smoking status, and the choices you make about cover. As a rough guide, a 25-year-old non-smoking office worker buying £1,500 a month of benefit on an 8-week deferred period with guaranteed premiums could expect to pay around £13 a month. A 45-year-old on the same terms would pay closer to £39. A 45-year-old plumber would pay around £44, because manual work carries higher risk.18Drewberry Insurance. How Much Does Income Protection Cost
The deferred period is your biggest lever. Pushing it from 4 weeks to 13 weeks can cut premiums by up to 50%.19Drewberry Insurance. Self-Employed Income Protection Choosing a short-term payment period or a suited-occupation definition will also bring the price down, at the cost of weaker cover when you need it.
Guaranteed, Age-Banded, and Reviewable Premiums
Insurers usually offer a choice of premium structure. Guaranteed premiums are fixed for the life of the policy. Age-banded premiums start lower but rise at set intervals as you get older, and the cumulative increase can be large. One comparison showed age-banded premiums rising from around £32 a month at age 25 to over £200 by age 65, while the equivalent guaranteed premium stayed between £28 and £40 throughout.20MoneyHelpDesk. Age Banded Income Protection
Reviewable premiums are now rare on personal policies. They start 15% to 35% cheaper than guaranteed premiums but can be re-priced by the insurer, typically every five years, based on the insurer’s claims experience. The size of each re-pricing is unpredictable, and projected lifetime costs tend to exceed guaranteed policies because the increases compound.21Simple Protection. Guaranteed vs Reviewable Income Protection Most mainstream UK insurers now sell only guaranteed premiums on personal cover.
Mental Health and Work-Related Stress
Policies do not usually contain blanket mental health exclusions. Depression, generalised anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, and PTSD can all trigger a valid claim if the symptoms stop you working as the policy defines it.22Protection Distributors Group. IP and Stress Musculoskeletal problems were the single largest cause of individual claims in 2024, at 34% of payouts, with mental health a significant and growing share.23ABI. Record £8bn Paid Out in Vital Protection Claims During 2024
Work-related stress on its own is different. Insurers generally do not treat it as a medical condition, so if the root cause is a workplace issue like workload or management, the claim is likely to be declined. Where stress has progressed to a diagnosed anxiety disorder or depression, the claim is assessed on those medical grounds instead.24Lockton. Why Insurers Often Reject Work-Related Stress Claims
If you have a mental health history when you apply, the insurer may increase premiums or add a specific exclusion for that condition. Some exclusions are reviewable and can be removed after a period of sustained good health.25Reassured. Income Protection Mental Health
Making a Claim
You notify the insurer as soon as you cannot work. For the first seven days most insurers accept self-certification. After that you need a Med3 fit note from your doctor for each subsequent week.26Eleos. The Lifecycle of an Income Protection Claim The insurer will verify your income using payslips or P60s and may ask for your GP records or an independent medical examination.27Financial Ombudsman Service. Claims are not decided on diagnosis alone. Assessors look at the severity of symptoms, the effect on your daily functioning, the impact on your specific job, and your response to treatment so far.22Protection Distributors Group. IP and Stress Across the industry, the main reasons claims get declined are failure to disclose pre-existing medical conditions and not meeting the policy’s definition of incapacity. The payout rate for income protection claims runs at around 80%, lower than other protection products because incapacity is more subjective to assess.23ABI. How It Fits With Sick Pay and State Benefits
If you are employed, you will usually get Statutory Sick Pay or an employer scheme first. SSP is £118.75 a week and lasts up to 28 weeks.28Drewberry Insurance. Is Your Sick Pay Sufficient Income protection is built to pick up once those payments end, which is why matching the deferred period to your sick pay duration is such a common approach.
The interaction with means-tested state benefits like Employment and Support Allowance and Universal Credit is less predictable. Some insurers factor state benefits into their payout calculation, reducing what they pay you, while others ignore them. Whether your income protection benefit affects your eligibility for state benefits depends on both the insurer’s terms and the benefit rules at the time of claim.29LifeSearch. Does Income Protection Affect State Benefits Citizens Advice suggests subtracting any expected state benefit income from your take-home pay when working out how much cover you actually need.6Citizens Advice. Self-Employed and Company Director Cover
Self-employed people get no SSP and no employer sick pay, which makes income protection especially relevant. They can buy individual policies on the same basis as employees, provided they are registered with a UK GP and have been a UK resident for at least three years. Some insurers want up to 12 months of trading history to verify income.19Drewberry Insurance. Self-Employed Income Protection
Paid personally from post-tax income, the benefit is tax-free. Limited company directors have another option: Executive Income Protection, where the business owns the policy and pays the premiums. Premiums are generally deductible as a business expense for corporation tax, but any benefit paid to the director through payroll is subject to PAYE income tax.30Legal & General. Group Cover Through an Employer
Many employers offer group income protection as a workplace benefit. It differs from an individual policy in several important ways:
- Underwriting. Group schemes usually cover employees without individual medical questions up to a free cover limit, so pre-existing conditions are often included. Individual policies almost always require full medical underwriting.15Unum. Income Protection
- Tax. The employer pays the premium and the benefit is passed through payroll, so your monthly payments are taxed as earnings. Individual policy payouts are tax-free.31Eleos. What Is Group Income Protection
- Portability. Group cover is tied to your job. Leave the employer and the cover ends. An individual policy stays with you.31Eleos. What Is Group Income Protection
- Customisation. The employer sets the deferred period, benefit level, and incapacity definition for everyone. Individual policies let you tailor every element.
Group cover can be generous, with some schemes insuring up to 80% of gross pre-incapacity earnings.15Unum. Income Protection Even so, many people with group cover take out a smaller individual policy on top, to keep something in place if they change jobs.
Income Protection vs Critical Illness Cover
The two products are regularly confused but work very differently:
- Payout type. Income protection pays a monthly income for as long as you cannot work. Critical illness cover pays a single lump sum on diagnosis of a specified condition.3Legal & General. Critical Illness Cover v Income Protection
- Trigger. Income protection pays when you cannot work. Critical illness cover pays on medical diagnosis, whether or not you can still work.
- Range. Income protection covers a broad range of illnesses and injuries, including common problems like back pain and depression. Critical illness cover is limited to a defined list of serious conditions, typically around 50.32Aviva. Income Protection and Critical Illness
- Number of claims. Income protection allows multiple claims over the policy term. Critical illness cover usually ends after a single payout.33Lloyds Bank. Difference Between Income Protection and Critical Illness Cover
The two products are complementary rather than competing. Someone diagnosed with cancer might use a critical illness lump sum to clear their mortgage, then rely on income protection to cover living expenses through treatment and recovery.
Rehabilitation and Return-to-Work Support
Modern policies increasingly include more than cash. Many insurers offer rehabilitation and early-intervention services as part of the policy, including funded private treatment for physical or psychological conditions, physiotherapy, return-to-work coaching, and employer mediation.34Cover Magazine. Income Protection Rehabilitation Aviva reported that 86% of employees who received rehabilitation support through its group income protection scheme in 2024 either returned to or remained at work.35Aviva. Group Income Protection Insurance Policies may also support a phased return, with the insurer paying a proportion of the benefit to top up reduced earnings if you go back part-time or in a lower-paid role.
Regulation and Complaints
Income protection is regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. If a claim is declined and you believe the decision is unfair, you can escalate the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service. Where the Ombudsman rules in your favour, it can order the insurer to backdate the claim to the end of the deferred period and pay interest on the missed benefit.27Financial Ombudsman Service. Income Protection Insurance When medical evidence conflicts, the Ombudsman weighs it on the balance of probabilities.
