ICE Margin Rates: Calculation, Tiers, and Missed Calls

ICE margin rates are the collateral amounts that Intercontinental Exchange clearing houses require traders and clearing members to post against open futures and options positions. They are recalculated at least once a day, vary by product, contract month, and portfolio mix, and can move sharply when markets get volatile. There is no single fixed table: the number attached to any given contract today is the output of a risk model running against current market data.

How ICE Calculates the Number

ICE describes initial margin as a “returnable deposit based on your open positions and any possible margin offsets.”1Intercontinental Exchange. Margin Models Proprietary risk models set the amount, factoring in price volatility, contract liquidity, and how positions in a portfolio relate to each other. Additional collateral can be layered on for concentration risk, illiquid positions, or wrong-way risk, where a member’s exposure and creditworthiness deteriorate together.

Two model frameworks are in use. The legacy ICE Risk Model 1 (IRM 1) uses Filtered Historical Simulation and measures risk instrument by instrument. It still applies to some agricultural, interest rate, and digital asset contracts.2Intercontinental Exchange. ICE Risk Model 2 The newer ICE Risk Model 2 (IRM 2) uses a Filtered Historical Simulation Value-at-Risk approach and evaluates the whole portfolio at once.3Intercontinental Exchange. ICE Launches Latest Phase of Its VaR-Based Portfolio Margining Methodology The practical effect: offsetting positions in related markets, say Brent crude hedged with gasoil, tend to attract lower margin under IRM 2 than under a model that looks at each leg alone.

Under IRM 2, the total requirement combines a market risk component and a Liquidity Risk Charge. The market risk side is the base VaR figure plus a Correlation Stress Charge for potential breakdowns in historical relationships and a Diversification Benefit Cap that limits how much offset you can claim across product groups. The Liquidity Risk Charge covers a Concentration Charge on positions above certain volume thresholds and a Bid-Ask Charge that applies to all positions.5Intercontinental Exchange. IRM 2 FAQ
IRM 2 has been rolled out in phases. Equity index futures at ICE Clear U.S. moved on January 24, 2022. At ICE Clear Europe, freight products transitioned on September 12, 2025, and primary energy products followed on November 7, 2025, bringing more than 1,000 energy futures and options under the new model, including Brent, gasoil, Midland WTI, Murban, TTF natural gas, and EU emissions allowances.

Why Rates Move

Two structural inputs shape how volatile your margin bill can be. The first is the Margin Period of Risk (MPOR), which is the number of days ICE assumes it would need to close out a defaulting member’s positions. Longer MPOR means higher margin. At ICE Clear Europe, a one-day MPOR applies to oil, U.S. natural gas and power, coal, U.S. emissions, NGL, and petrochemicals. EU gas, EU power, EU emissions, and freight use a two-day MPOR.7Intercontinental Exchange. ICE Clear Europe Risk Management EU rules require a minimum two-day MPOR for house and affiliate positions, so where the base is one day ICE collects an additional EMIR Add-on.8U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. The second is the model’s response to volatility itself. Risk-sensitive models can be procyclical, spiking margin during a crisis exactly when liquidity is hardest to raise. IRM 2 counters that with a volatility floor that prevents margins from drifting too low in calm periods, a lambda parameter that controls how fast the model reacts to extreme moves, and a 25% buffer tied to the exponentially weighted moving average of volatility. That buffer is designed to be fully active when volatility sits below its historical median and to phase out as volatility rises, so it does not stack on top of a stress move.9U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. How Far Rates Can Move: The 2026 Energy Spike

Early 2026 showed what the daily recalculation looks like in practice. After the outbreak of the war in Iran in late February 2026 and disruption to oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, Brent surged toward $120 per barrel and volatility spread across energy markets. Margin for the nearest Brent crude futures contract more than doubled to just over $11,000. Margin for ICE gasoil, the European diesel contract, rose roughly fourfold to nearly $21,000.10Livemint. Oil Trading Costs Have Surged Since Iran War Began These were not one-off adjustments but the cumulative effect of IRM 2 updating daily against sustained volatility. Some investors cut back activity in oil futures as a result.

By early July 2026, the indicative initial margin on the front-month Brent contract stood at roughly $11,967 long and $10,945 short, tapering to about $5,674 long and $4,216 short for contracts expiring in August 2027.11Intercontinental Exchange. Brent Crude Futures Margin Rates Two things are worth noting from those figures: margins fall for more distant expiries, and long and short sides of the same contract can carry different rates.

Hedger and Speculator Tiers

ICE, like other exchanges, sets different schedules for hedgers and speculators. Bona fide hedgers, meaning commercial participants using futures against physical price risk, generally receive lower requirements than speculators trading for directional profit. A futures commission merchant must have a reasonable basis for granting hedge status, and hedge and speculative positions have to be separately identifiable in the firm’s records.12National Futures Association. Margins Handbook Firms can also require more than the exchange minimum, so the rate your broker enforces may sit above the published number.

Margin Calls and What Happens If You Miss One

ICE marks open positions to market at least once daily, with variation margin settling profits and losses between accounts.13U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission. ICE Clearing Houses SEC Filing Positions are also monitored on a near real-time basis intraday. Adverse price moves, new trades, or a drop in collateral value can trigger an intraday margin call. At ICE Clear Europe the intraday call window runs from 07:30 to 20:00 London time, with a $1 million per account materiality threshold, and more than one call can be issued in a single day.7Intercontinental Exchange. If a clearing member fails to meet a call, the clearing house can declare an event of default and close out positions. Losses run through a defined default waterfall:

  • The defaulter’s own initial margin, excess collateral, and guaranty fund contributions are used first.
  • ICE’s own contributed capital, sometimes called skin in the game, is applied next.
  • Proceeds from default insurance policies follow.
  • Non-defaulting members’ guaranty fund contributions can be tapped pro rata if losses run deeper.
  • In extreme cases, ICE can call non-defaulting members for additional funds, capped at a set multiple of their guaranty fund contribution.7Intercontinental Exchange. ICE Clear Europe Risk Management

ICE Clear Europe can also port a defaulting member’s client positions to another clearing member on a best-efforts basis.

Finding the Current Rate for a Contract

ICE does not publish a single consolidated rate table. Current information is spread across product pages on the main margins site, which is organized by exchange: ICE Futures Europe, ICE Futures U.S., ICE Endex, ICE Futures Abu Dhabi, and ICE Futures Singapore. Each links to downloadable parameter files and rate schedules for its product categories.14Intercontinental Exchange. Margins IRM 1 parameters are available as CSV downloads from the ICE Clear Europe risk management page.

For portfolio-level calculation, ICE Clearing Analytics (ICA) is a web-based tool that lets registered users upload portfolios and compute initial margin under both IRM 1 and IRM 2. It supports what-if scenarios so you can see how adding, removing, or adjusting a position would change the requirement before you execute, and it publishes a margin matrix with current values for benchmark contracts and common spread strategies.15Intercontinental Exchange. ICE Clearing Analytics Rate changes are also communicated to clearing members through published circulars, typically with one business day’s notice.16Federal Register. ICE Clear Europe SR Filing If you hold or plan to hold positions when volatility is rising, that circular feed and the ICA matrix are the two places to watch.
