A Humane Society tax receipt is the written proof the IRS wants before it will let you deduct your donation, and the form it has to take depends on how much you gave and what you gave. For any cash gift under $250, a bank record or a simple written note from the shelter is enough. Once a single contribution hits $250, you need a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the Humane Society itself, and property or vehicle donations bring additional forms on top of that.
What Your Receipt Needs to Show
The IRS uses a tiered system, and the rules tighten as the dollar amount climbs.
Cash Gifts Under $250
For any cash contribution below $250, you need either a bank record (canceled check, credit card statement, or electronic transfer confirmation) or a written communication from the Humane Society showing the organization’s name, the amount, and the date.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 506, Charitable Contributions Either one, on its own, is sufficient. A bank record will not substitute for a receipt on a non-cash gift at any dollar level, because it does not describe what you handed over.
Gifts of $250 or More
At $250 and above, a bank record is no longer enough. You need a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the organization.2Legal Information Institute. 26 USC 170(f)(8) – Substantiation Requirement for Certain Contributions “Contemporaneous” means you have the document in hand by the earlier of your filing date or the filing deadline including extensions. Miss that, and the IRS will disallow the deduction in an audit even when the gift is genuine.
Payments Over $75 Where You Got Something Back
If you pay more than $75 and receive something in return, like a gala ticket, event dinner, tote bag, or calendar, the Humane Society is legally required to give you a written disclosure. That disclosure has to tell you your deduction is limited to the portion above the fair market value of what you received, and it has to include a good-faith estimate of that value.3Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions: Quid Pro Quo Contributions Pay $100 for a ticket to a dinner worth $40, and only $60 is deductible.
What a Valid Acknowledgment Must Contain
The IRS is specific about what a $250-plus acknowledgment has to include:4Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions: Written Acknowledgments
- The legal name of the Humane Society branch.
- The cash amount, or a description (not a dollar value) of donated property such as pet food, blankets, or medical supplies.
- A statement of whether the organization gave you anything in return, and if nothing was provided, an explicit statement to that effect.
- A good-faith estimate of the value of any goods or services you received.
The acknowledgment does not have to carry the shelter’s Employer Identification Number, your name, or the exact date of the gift. Most Humane Societies include those anyway, but their absence will not sink the receipt.4Internal Revenue Service. Charitable Contributions: Written Acknowledgments
How to Get the Receipt
Most Humane Society branches send an automated email receipt as a PDF shortly after an online donation goes through. Mail a check, and you can expect a printed acknowledgment letter at your return address within a few weeks. In-person donors can ask staff for a receipt on the spot. Larger organizations run donor portals where you can log in, view your giving history, and download prior receipts if the original went astray.
For non-cash gifts, ask whoever accepts your items to write up a receipt listing what you brought in. The shelter is not required to assign a dollar value to donated goods. Setting fair market value is on you as the donor, so keep your own notes on the condition and estimated worth of everything you dropped off.
Property Donations Over $500 and Over $5,000
Non-cash gifts scale into more paperwork. Once your total non-cash contributions for the year cross $500, you file Form 8283 with your return.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 8283, Noncash Charitable Contributions Section A of the form asks for a description of the items, the date you acquired them, how you arrived at fair market value, and the donation date.
If any single item or group of similar items is worth more than $5,000, you move into Section B and must obtain a qualified appraisal from a qualified appraiser before claiming the deduction.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 8283 (12/2025) Publicly traded securities are exempt from that appraisal step; most physical property is not. Appraisal fees are not themselves deductible as a charitable contribution, so weigh that cost before donating high-value items.
Vehicle Donations
Cars, boats, and airplanes follow their own track. If you donate a vehicle claimed at more than $500, the Humane Society or its processing partner has to give you Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale or of the donation date.7Internal Revenue Service. About Form 1098-C, Contributions of Motor Vehicles, Boats, and Airplanes What you can deduct depends on what the shelter does with the vehicle. If they sell it, your deduction is generally capped at the gross sale price, not the Kelley Blue Book figure. If they put it into shelter operations or give it to someone in need, you can claim fair market value instead. Either way, Form 1098-C has to be attached to your return.
Foster and Volunteer Expenses
Unreimbursed out-of-pocket costs from volunteering or fostering for a Humane Society can be deductible as charitable contributions, provided the expenses tie directly to work for the organization rather than to your own pets.
Deductible foster expenses generally include food, litter, veterinary bills, and supplies like crates or bedding used for the shelter’s animals. The animals need to remain the property of the rescue, and personal pet costs have to stay separate. Shared expenses that cannot be traced to either the foster animals or your own, like a vacuum repair or a warehouse membership, have been disallowed.
Driving to the shelter or transporting animals counts too. The 2026 charitable mileage rate is 14 cents per mile, set by statute.8Internal Revenue Service. IRS Sets 2026 Business Standard Mileage Rate Parking and tolls are deductible on top of the mileage. Keep a trip log with dates, destinations, and purpose.
The $250 acknowledgment rule reaches volunteer expenses too. Once your unreimbursed costs for a single contribution hit $250, you need a written acknowledgment from the Humane Society confirming your volunteer role and stating that you were not reimbursed. Receipts and canceled checks by themselves will not carry the deduction at that level.2Legal Information Institute. 26 USC 170(f)(8) – Substantiation Requirement for Certain Contributions
Confirm the Shelter Is a 501(c)(3)
Not every group with “humane society” in its name qualifies. Before you count on a deduction, check the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search to confirm the shelter holds active 501(c)(3) status.9Internal Revenue Service. Tax Exempt Organization Search The tool draws from the IRS Publication 78 database and also flags organizations that have had their exemption revoked. Donate to a group whose status is gone, and the deduction is gone with it, whatever receipt you hold.
Itemizing and Recordkeeping
A receipt only matters if you itemize on Schedule A rather than taking the standard deduction.10Internal Revenue Service. Deducting Charitable Contributions at a Glance For 2026, the standard deduction is $16,100 for single filers, $32,200 for married couples filing jointly, and $24,150 for heads of household.11Internal Revenue Service. IRS Releases Tax Inflation Adjustments for Tax Year 2026 If your itemized total (mortgage interest, state and local taxes, medical expenses, charitable gifts, and the rest) does not clear that number, the Humane Society receipt will not change your tax bill.
Hold onto every receipt for at least three years from the date you filed the return that claimed the deduction. The IRS generally has three years from your filing date to assess additional tax.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6501 – Limitations on Assessment and Collection Digital copies alongside the paper originals are the simplest insurance.
