A Hulu charge on your PayPal account means you have an active Hulu subscription with PayPal set as its payment method, and Hulu pulled the monthly fee through a recurring billing agreement you authorized at signup. The charge repeats on the same cycle each month until you cancel the subscription at Hulu or revoke the automatic payment inside PayPal.
Why Hulu Is Billing Your PayPal
The usual culprit is a free trial that converted. When you sign up, you agree to automatic billing once the trial ends, and Hulu charges the monthly rate for the plan you picked. Trial windows vary by plan; the Hulu + Live TV trial runs just three days, so the first charge can arrive quickly.1Hulu. Hulu Free Trials
The other common explanation is a subscription you forgot about, or one someone else in your household started using your PayPal. PayPal’s activity log shows the date the billing agreement was first authorized, which tells you when the relationship actually began.
Why the Amount Doesn’t Match What You Expected
Hulu’s pricing covers a wide range. Hulu + Live TV runs $89.99 per month with ads and $99.99 without.2Hulu. Stream Live Sports, News, TV Shows, and Movies A Hulu-and-Disney+ bundle starts at $12.99 per month, and a three-service bundle with Disney+ and ESPN starts at $35.99.3Hulu. Hulu Stream TV and Movies Live and Online Premium add-ons sit on top of the base plan — Starz, for example, is $11.99 per month.4Hulu. Get Starz for $11.99/Month
Taxes shift the total too. Hulu collects state and local sales or telecommunications taxes based on your billing address, which can add several dollars depending on where you live.5Hulu. Finding the Charge in Your PayPal Activity
Open your PayPal activity log and locate the Hulu entry. Alongside the payment you’ll see the date the billing agreement was originally authorized, which tells you how long the subscription has been running.
Check that the email tied to the Hulu account is one you recognize. People sometimes end up with more than one Hulu account under different email addresses without realizing it. If the charge doesn’t match any plan you remember choosing, look for add-ons or a recent plan upgrade in Hulu’s subscription settings.
Canceling the Subscription at Hulu
The cleanest way to stop the charges is to cancel at the source. Log in at Hulu’s website, click your profile icon to reach the Account page, open “Your Subscription,” select “Manage Plan,” and choose the cancel option. Hulu runs you through several confirmation prompts. You keep access through the end of the current billing period.
If you’re not sure you want to walk away for good, Hulu lets you pause the subscription for up to 12 weeks. A pause stops charges without erasing your watchlist, and the subscription resumes automatically when the pause ends. You can still cancel during that window without being charged again.6Hulu. Blocking Hulu’s Access Inside PayPal
If you can’t get into your Hulu account, or you want a second layer of protection, you can revoke Hulu’s billing authority directly in PayPal. Go to Settings, click Payments, select “Subscriptions and saved businesses,” find Hulu, and cancel the automatic payment.7PayPal. What Is an Automatic Payment and How Do I Update or Cancel One That immediately stops Hulu from pulling future payments through PayPal.
Revoking in PayPal does not cancel the Hulu subscription itself. Hulu may try a backup payment method on file, or eventually suspend the account for nonpayment. If you want the service gone, cancel on both sides.
When Hulu Is Billed Through Disney+
If you subscribed to Hulu as part of a Disney bundle and Disney+ handles the billing, you cannot cancel or change the Hulu portion from Hulu’s website. Check the Payment Information section on your Hulu Account page to confirm who’s billing you. Plan changes, payment updates, and cancellations for Disney-billed accounts all go through your Disney+ account at DisneyPlus.com.8Hulu. Managing a Disney-Billed Account If the PayPal charge is from Disney rather than Hulu directly, that’s why Hulu’s own cancel flow won’t help.
Disputing a Charge You Didn’t Authorize
If you believe the Hulu charge is unauthorized or wrong, file a dispute through PayPal’s Resolution Center. The deadline depends on the problem: 180 days from the payment date for items not received, and 60 days from the first statement showing the error for billing disputes.9PayPal. Dispute Filing Timeframes After you file, you and Hulu work it out directly first; either side can escalate to a formal claim and PayPal decides.10PayPal. When the charge is truly unauthorized — someone accessed your account without permission and you got no benefit from it — the Electronic Fund Transfer Act caps your liability for an unauthorized electronic transfer at $50, provided you notify the financial institution promptly. The institution must investigate within 10 business days of your error notice, or provisionally credit your account and take up to 45 days to finish.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution
One important limit: the EFTA’s definition of “unauthorized” excludes transfers made by someone you gave account access to, unless you’ve already told the institution that person is no longer authorized.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693a – Definitions If a family member you shared your PayPal login with signed up for Hulu, that generally won’t count as unauthorized under the statute, and the PayPal dispute process is the more practical route.
