How will you receive your amended tax refund? Direct Deposit or Paper Check
The delivery method is decided by how you filed, not by preference. E-filed amended returns for 2021 and later years can be paid by direct deposit to a checking or savings account. Paper-filed 1040-X returns cannot; the IRS mails a paper check through the U.S. Postal Service, and there is no workaround.1Internal Revenue Service. File an Amended Return
To choose direct deposit, enter your routing number and account number on the electronic Form 1040-X, the same way you would on an original return. Check both numbers carefully before you submit. If the deposit fails because of an account problem, the IRS falls back to mailing a paper check to the most recent address on file for you.2Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 1040-X (Rev. December 2025)
If you are amending more than one tax year, each year gets its own Form 1040-X and each is processed on its own track. Paper filers have to mail them in separate envelopes. One year’s refund may arrive well before another’s.
How Long After Approval the Money Arrives
The IRS says to allow 8 to 12 weeks for a Form 1040-X to be processed, and some returns run to 16 weeks.3Internal Revenue Service. Where’s My Amended Return? Once the IRS approves the adjustment, the refund moves into disbursement. Direct deposits generally hit the account within a few business days. Paper checks require printing and mailing by the Bureau of the Fiscal Service and can add another few weeks depending on where you live.
Returns that are incomplete, unsigned, or contain errors take longer, as do returns flagged for identity theft or filed with an injured spouse allocation. If the IRS needs more information, it will mail you a letter, and processing pauses until you respond.4Internal Revenue Service. The CP21B Notice That Confirms the Refund
When the IRS finishes its review and agrees you are owed money, it mails a CP21B notice. The letter confirms the changes and tells you to expect your refund within two to three weeks of the notice date.5Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP21B Notice Keep the notice with your tax records; it is the official confirmation that your account was updated.
If you chose direct deposit, the money often shows up before the letter does. If you are waiting on a paper check, the two-to-three-week window in the notice is the best guide for when it will land in your mailbox. The notice includes a phone number to call if the refund amount is not what you calculated.
When the Amount You Receive Is Less Than Expected
Even after the IRS approves your amended return, the deposit or check can be smaller than the refund on the return.
