How to Write Expedite on a Passport Envelope: Address, Fee, and Mailing

To expedite a mail-in passport renewal, write the word EXPEDITE in large, bold capital letters on the outside of your mailing envelope before you send it. That single marking tells the processing center to route your Form DS-82 application for faster handling, cutting the wait from the routine four to six weeks down to two to three weeks.¹ Knowing how to write expedite on a passport envelope correctly, and where to send it, is what separates a two-week turnaround from a lost month.

How to Write It on the Envelope

Use a thick, dark marker. Print the word in all capital letters near the top of the envelope, clearly separated from the address block so mail-sorting equipment does not confuse the two. Red ink stands out best against a white envelope, but any dark color works as long as the word is large and legible.

There is no official template, sticker, or stamp for this. The State Department’s instruction is simply to write EXPEDITE on the outside of the envelope.¹ The goal is visibility. A postal worker or intake clerk who glances at your envelope should see immediately that this application needs faster handling. Some applicants place the word across the top; others use the lower-left corner. Either is fine.

The Correct Mailing Address

Expedited renewals go to a different P.O. box than routine ones at the same facility. Send your envelope to:

Using the wrong box is one of the easiest mistakes to make, and it can undo the whole point of marking the envelope. Double-check the number before you seal anything.

What to Put Inside

Marking the envelope only helps if the application inside is complete. Missing items force the processing center to contact you, and every follow-up costs days. Include:

A completed and signed Form DS-82, with no blank fields.
Your most recent passport book or card. You must submit the physical document you are renewing.
One recent color passport photo meeting State Department size and background specifications.
An original or certified copy of any legal name-change document, such as a marriage certificate or court order, if your name has changed since your last passport.
Payment covering both the application fee and the expedite fee, made payable to “U.S. Department of State.”²

Write the applicant’s full name and date of birth in the memo line of the check or money order. The processing center uses that information to match payments to applications if anything gets separated in handling.

The Expedite Fee

An adult passport book renewal costs $130. Expedited service adds $60, bringing the total to $190.³ If you also want the finished passport returned by priority mail in one to two days instead of standard mail, add $22.05, for a total of $212.05.

By mail, the only accepted payment methods are personal checks, certified checks, cashier’s checks, traveler’s checks, and money orders. Credit and debit cards are not accepted for mail-in applications.²

Getting the Envelope There Quickly

Standard first-class mail works, but most people paying for expedited processing do not want to lose days in transit. USPS Priority Mail Express is a common choice for getting the envelope to Philadelphia quickly, and it includes tracking and insurance. That insurance matters, because your current passport is inside the envelope.

Keep the tracking number. If the envelope goes missing, you will need it to file a claim and to report your passport lost. The tracking number also tells you when the processing center received your application, which is the starting point for the two-to-three-week window.

Processing times do not include mailing time in either direction. The State Department notes that mailing can add up to two weeks to your total wait.³ Paying for fast outbound shipping and the $22.05 return delivery compresses that gap considerably.

Who Can Actually Use This Method

Writing EXPEDITE on an envelope only works if you qualify to renew by mail using Form DS-82. Your most recent passport must meet all of these conditions:¹

Issued within the last 15 years.
Issued when you were 16 or older.
Not damaged beyond normal wear and tear.
Never reported lost or stolen.
Issued in your current name, or you can submit a legal name-change document.

If you do not meet these conditions, you have to apply in person on Form DS-11 at a passport acceptance facility, often a post office, county clerk’s office, or public library.⁴ You can still request expedited processing at the facility, and the staff there will mark and mail the envelope for you, but you cannot mail a DS-11 on your own.

One other boundary is worth flagging. The State Department’s online renewal option is not compatible with expedited service: online renewal is routine-processing only.⁵ If you need a passport faster than the routine timeline, the mail-in route with EXPEDITE on the envelope is the option to use.

When Two to Three Weeks Is Still Too Slow

Expedited mail processing takes two to three weeks at the processing center, plus mailing time on both ends.³ If your travel is sooner than that, marking an envelope will not save you.

For international travel within 14 calendar days, or a foreign visa needed within 28 calendar days, you can make an appointment at a regional passport agency or center. You will need proof of upcoming travel, such as a flight itinerary or booking confirmation.⁶ Appointments can be difficult to secure during peak travel season, so book as early as you can.

For a life-or-death emergency, such as the serious illness or death of an immediate family member abroad, same-day processing may be available. Call the State Department at 1-877-487-2778 to request an emergency appointment.³
