How to Use FSA on Amazon: Eligible Items, Checkout, and Limits

To use your FSA on Amazon, add your FSA debit card as a payment method under Your Account, keep a regular card on file as a backup, and shop items marked “FSA or HSA Eligible.” At checkout, Amazon charges the eligible portion of your order to the FSA card and puts everything else on the backup. The split happens automatically in one order.

Add Your FSA Card as a Payment Method

Open Your Account, go to Payment options (some accounts label it Wallet), and select Add a payment method. Enter the 16-digit card number, expiration date, and the name exactly as printed on the card. Amazon treats the FSA card like any other debit card during setup.

You also need a second payment method on file. Amazon charges that backup for anything the FSA card cannot cover, including non-eligible items in the same order and fees that fall outside your plan’s scope.1Amazon. Accepted Payment Methods Without a backup, an order containing anything beyond eligible products will not go through.

Some administrators restrict which merchants can process FSA charges. If your card is declined during setup or at checkout, contact your FSA administrator to confirm Amazon is on your plan’s approved merchant list. Most major administrators allow it; a few smaller plans do not.

Find Eligible Items Before You Add to Cart

Amazon flags qualifying products with an “FSA or HSA Eligible” badge near the price on the product detail page. If the badge is there, the item has been categorized as meeting federal spending-account requirements. That is the fastest confirmation when you already know what you want.

For browsing, Amazon runs a dedicated FSA store that filters out everything ineligible. Search “FSA store” in the search bar, or go directly to the FSA-eligible section of the site.1Amazon. Accepted Payment Methods It is organized by category — first aid, diagnostics, pain relief, vision care — so you can pull together a full order in one pass.

One caveat. The badge reflects general FSA eligibility, not the rules of your specific plan. A limited-purpose FSA usually covers only dental and vision, not the broader medical category. If your plan has narrower scope, confirm with your benefits administrator before a large order.

What Actually Qualifies

FSA-eligible items are products used to diagnose, treat, prevent, or manage a disease, or that affect the structure or function of the body.2Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 213 – Medical, Dental, Etc., Expenses Bandages, thermometers, blood pressure monitors, first-aid supplies, reading glasses, contact lens solution, sunscreen rated SPF 15 or higher, and orthopedic braces all qualify.

Over-the-counter medications no longer need a prescription to qualify. The CARES Act removed that requirement in 2020 for FSAs and similar accounts.3U.S. Congress. CARES Act – Section 3702 Pain relievers, allergy medication, antacids, cold medicine, and sleep aids are covered. Menstrual care products such as pads and tampons also qualify under the same law.

General wellness products do not count. Toothpaste, vitamins taken without a specific diagnosis, cosmetics, and gym memberships fall outside the definition.4Congressional Research Service. Health Savings Account (HSA) Qualified Medical Expenses The line can look arbitrary. Medicated acne cream qualifies; a general face wash does not. That is why the badge is worth using instead of guessing.

How Checkout Splits the Charges

Select the FSA card as the payment method during checkout. Amazon’s system identifies which items in your cart carry the eligibility badge and charges only those amounts to the FSA card. Everything else, including non-eligible products and potentially shipping or gift-wrap fees, goes to your backup method. The split is automatic. You don’t need to place separate orders.

The order summary shows exactly how much will be charged to each payment method before you place the order. Verify the split looks right. Catching a mistake here is much easier than disputing a charge with your FSA administrator later.

If you want a clean receipt, place FSA-eligible items in a separate order from your regular Amazon shopping. Mixing works technically, but a single-purpose order produces cleaner paperwork if substantiation questions come up.

Save Your Receipts

Every FSA purchase must be substantiated. Your plan administrator needs proof that the money went to a qualifying expense, and undocumented charges can be treated as taxable income.5Internal Revenue Service. Claims Substantiation for Payment or Reimbursement of Medical and Dependent Care Expenses

To pull a receipt, go to Returns & Orders, find the transaction, and open the invoice or order summary. The document lists each item, the amount charged to the FSA card, and the amount charged to the backup. Download the PDF and save it somewhere you can actually find it later.

Many FSA card transactions are auto-substantiated when the merchant’s system confirms eligibility at the point of sale. Auto-substantiation does not always work, though, and your administrator may still request documentation. If a purchase gets flagged and you miss the response deadline, your card can be suspended until the matter is resolved. Save the receipt when you place the order, not when you get the email.

2026 Contribution Limit and Year-End Deadlines

The 2026 health care FSA contribution limit is $3,400.6Internal Revenue Service. Rev. FSAs are use-it-or-lose-it accounts. Money still in the account when your plan year ends is forfeited to your employer, and you cannot get a refund.7Internal Revenue Service. Publication 969 – Health Savings Accounts and Other Tax-Favored Health Plans Your employer may offer one of two cushions, but not both:

  • Grace period. Up to two and a half extra months after the plan year to incur new eligible expenses using leftover funds. A December 31 plan year could extend spending into mid-March.
  • Carryover. Up to $680 of unused 2026 funds can roll into the next plan year. Any balance above that is still forfeited.6Internal Revenue Service. Rev. Proc. 2025-32

Neither option is required. Some plans have a hard cutoff with no cushion. Check with HR or your benefits portal to see which rule applies. If you have a balance left as your deadline approaches, Amazon’s FSA store is one of the quickest ways to spend it on things you will actually use, like first-aid supplies, allergy medication, pain relievers, and sunscreen.
