To update the address on your EFIN, log into your IRS e-Services account, open your existing e-file application, edit the business address fields, and have the Principal or Responsible Official electronically sign the modification. The IRS gives you 30 days from any change to your business address, phone number, or personnel to update the application, and missing that window can result in your EFIN being inactivated.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN The editing itself takes about ten minutes. IRS review afterward can run several weeks.
The 30-Day Clock
Treat the 30-day deadline as hard. If your application falls out of date, the IRS can inactivate your EFIN, which cuts off e-filing for clients immediately. Getting an inactivated EFIN restored is slower and less certain than updating on time.
The address on file is also where the IRS sends compliance notices and security alerts. Letters that go to an old office can mean missed response deadlines on matters that affect your e-file privileges directly.
What You Need Before You Log In
Have your nine-digit EFIN, your complete new address exactly as you want it recorded (including suite or unit numbers), and access to your IRS e-Services account, which now requires ID.me identity verification.2Internal Revenue Service. E-Services
If you don’t already have an ID.me account, set one up before you need it. Verification involves uploading a government-issued photo ID and taking a selfie for facial matching, and some users are routed through a live video call that adds time.3Internal Revenue Service. New Identity Verification Process to Access Certain IRS Online Tools and Services Don’t discover on day 29 that you can’t get in.
One more constraint: only someone listed on the EFIN application as a Principal or Responsible Official can modify it, and each person who needs access registers for e-Services individually.4Internal Revenue Service. E-Services Registration Make sure the right person is at the keyboard.
Editing the Application
Sign in to the IRS e-Services portal with your ID.me credentials. From the dashboard, find your IRS e-file application and choose the option to modify it. The system walks you through the application in sections.
Open the business or contact information section and enter the new street address, city, state, and ZIP code. Check every character. A transposed ZIP digit or a misspelled street name can delay processing or bounce IRS mail, which is exactly what you’re trying to prevent.
Leave fields you aren’t changing alone. Editing principal information or banking details you didn’t intend to change can pull your modification into extra review and stretch out the timeline.
At the end, the Principal or Responsible Official signs the modification electronically. The signature carries the same legal weight as signing a paper form. Save or print the confirmation page the system generates. The tracking number on it is your proof of the submission date.
Processing Time
Your change isn’t live when you hit submit. General IRS address change processing takes four to six weeks.5Internal Revenue Service. Address Changes You can keep e-filing while the modification is pending, but any IRS correspondence sent in that window may still go to the old address.
Once the update is approved, the IRS sends a confirmation letter to the new address to verify it’s deliverable. Keep that letter with your compliance records. If nothing arrives after about six weeks, call the e-help Desk and ask for a status check.
When an Address Change Isn’t the Right Fix
Updating works when your firm is moving one location to another. Two situations call for a different path.
If you’re opening a second office and plan to transmit e-filed returns from both, you need a separate EFIN application for the new office. The IRS requires an EFIN for each location where transmissions occur.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN
If the practice is being sold, your EFIN is not transferable. New owners must apply for their own.1Internal Revenue Service. How to Maintain, Monitor and Protect Your EFIN Changing the address and swapping in new principal names on the existing EFIN is not a legitimate workaround for a change in ownership.
Other Accounts You Still Need to Update
Changing your EFIN address does not change your address anywhere else at the IRS. Each registration is maintained separately.
If principals at your firm hold Preparer Tax Identification Numbers, each PTIN account’s address has to be updated through the PTIN system directly.6Internal Revenue Service. Update Your PTIN Account Information If your firm acts as a Reporting Agent under Form 8655, address changes for that authorization require contacting the IRS directly.7Internal Revenue Service. Form 8655 (Rev. January 2024) – Reporting Agent Authorization Your EIN records, CAF number, and state-level preparer registrations each need their own update as well.
Build a checklist of every IRS and state registration your firm holds and work through all of them inside the same 30-day window. Finishing the EFIN change and assuming the rest will follow is how firms get blindsided weeks later by a notice sent to the old address on a different account.
If Your EFIN Is Already Inactivated
If the 30-day window has already passed and your EFIN has been inactivated, you can’t fix it from the e-Services portal alone. Call the IRS e-help Desk. The same applies if you haven’t used your EFIN in the last two years, which can also trigger inactivation.8Internal Revenue Service. FAQs About Electronic Filing Identification Numbers (EFIN)
If the inactivation stems from the EFIN being compromised by an unauthorized party, the process is different: the Principal or Responsible Official calls, passes authentication, and the IRS issues a new EFIN entirely.8Internal Revenue Service.
