To unfreeze your Social Security number, you actually lift the freeze on your credit reports at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — the freeze rides on your credit file, not on the SSN itself. Each bureau handles its own freeze, so you submit a separate request at each one where you want the report reopened. Online and phone requests must be processed within one hour under federal law, and the whole thing is free.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts
If what you actually froze was your Social Security Administration account (Block Electronic Access), that’s a different process handled by phone with SSA. It’s covered at the end.
What to Have Ready Before You Start
Each bureau will ask for the same identifying information. Pull these together first:
- Full legal name, including middle initial and any suffix
- Social Security number
- Date of birth
- Every address you’ve lived at for the past two years
- Email address
The details need to match what the bureau already has on file. An old address you never updated or a name change that didn’t propagate can push your request into manual review.2Annual Credit Report.com. Security Freeze Basics If the automated system can’t verify you, the bureaus accept mailed requests with copies of a government-issued ID (driver’s license or state ID) plus a recent utility bill or bank statement showing your current address. Having clean scans ready before you start saves a second round trip if the online attempt fails.
Do You Need to Unfreeze All Three Bureaus?
Not always. Credit card issuers typically pull from one bureau, so if you can find out which one your lender uses, you only need to lift that report. Mortgage lenders almost always pull from all three. Ask the lender directly — it’s a routine question they hear constantly, and the answer saves you the step of unfreezing reports that nobody’s going to look at.
You also get to choose between a temporary lift and a permanent removal. A temporary lift reopens your report for a window you specify, from a single day to a few weeks, then the freeze snaps back automatically. That’s usually the better option when you’re applying for one specific product and want the protection back in place afterward.
How to Submit the Request at Each Bureau
You have three ways in: online, phone, or mail. Online is fastest and gives you a confirmation to save right away.
Online
All three bureaus manage freezes through account logins. At Equifax, sign in to your myEquifax account and go to the freeze management section. At Experian, log in to your free Experian account and lift or schedule an unfreeze with one click. At TransUnion, use the Service Center. Each portal lets you pick a temporary lift or a full removal and gives you a digital confirmation.
By Phone
If you’d rather not create an online account, each bureau has an automated line:
- Equifax: 800-685-1111
- Experian: 888-397-3742
- TransUnion: 888-909-8872
The automated system walks you through identity verification using your personal information, and you get verbal confirmation once the request is queued.3IdentityTheft.gov. Credit Bureau Contacts
By Mail
Written requests take the longest but still work. Include your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, addresses for the past two years, and copies of a government ID and a utility bill. The addresses:
- Equifax: P.O. Box 105788, Atlanta, GA 30348
- Experian: P.O. Box 9554, Allen, TX 75013
- TransUnion: P.O. Box 160, Woodlyn, PA 19094
Use certified mail with return receipt if you want proof of delivery. The processing clock starts when the bureau receives the letter, not when you drop it in the mailbox.4USAGov. How to Place or Lift a Security Freeze on Your Credit Report
How Long It Takes
Federal law sets hard deadlines. Online and phone requests must be processed within one hour. Mailed requests must be processed within three business days after the bureau receives your letter.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts
In practice, online lifts are often instant. The one-hour window is the outer legal limit, not the typical experience. If you’re sitting at a dealership or a loan officer’s desk and realize your report is still frozen, you can usually pull out your phone, log in, and have it lifted before the paperwork is done. Phone requests also tend to process within minutes.
Mail is the wildcard. Transit adds days before the three-business-day clock even starts, so plan on one to two weeks total. If you know a credit application is coming, don’t rely on mail.
Lost Your Old PIN
For years, the biggest headache with freezes was losing the PIN issued when you placed one. All three major bureaus have largely moved past that system. Equifax no longer requires its old 10-digit PIN and manages freezes through your myEquifax username and password.5Equifax. Manage Equifax Security Freeze Without PIN Experian dropped its PIN requirement in favor of a free account login.6Experian. Freeze or Unfreeze Your Credit File for Free TransUnion verifies identity through personal information when you call and handles freezes through its online Service Center.7TransUnion. Freeze Support Center – Credit Freeze FAQs
If you froze your credit years ago and still have a PIN, keep it, but you probably won’t need it. Mailed requests are the one place a bureau may still reference a PIN. If you’re mailing in and don’t have your old one, call the bureau first to confirm what they need.
It Should Be Free
Placing, lifting, and removing a credit freeze is free under federal law. No bureau can charge you for any of these actions.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts If a page asks for payment to lift a freeze, you’re either looking at a “credit lock” product or a scam.
Credit locks are a separate commercial product the bureaus sell, and the terms are set by the bureau rather than by statute.8Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts Equifax’s Lock & Alert is free, but Experian’s CreditLock runs about $24.99 per month as part of a premium subscription, and TransUnion’s lock is bundled into a service costing about $29.95 per month. Locks get marketed as faster because they toggle instantly in an app, but the legal freeze already processes within an hour online and costs nothing.
Lifting a Freeze on a Child’s Report
Federal law lets parents and guardians freeze a minor’s credit file. Lifting it works differently because the child can’t verify identity through the standard system. You’ll typically need to prove both the child’s identity and your authority: a birth certificate or court order establishing guardianship, your own government-issued ID, and the child’s Social Security number.9Federal Trade Commission. New Protections Available for Minors Under 16 Foster care agencies acting for a child in their care need documentation certifying custody.
These requests generally can’t go through the bureau’s standard online portal. Expect to mail documents or call directly. TransUnion, for example, requires mailed documentation with proof of authority.10TransUnion. Child Identity Theft Start early — the three-business-day mail rule doesn’t account for transit or the added identity verification.
ChexSystems and NCTUE Freezes
The big three aren’t the only agencies tracking your financial history. ChexSystems reports on banking activity like bounced checks and involuntary account closures, and some banks check it when you open a new checking or savings account. A ChexSystems freeze is separate from your credit bureau freezes.
ChexSystems lets you manage a freeze through its online consumer portal, by phone at 800-887-7652, or by mail to Chex Systems, Inc., Attn: Security Freeze Department, P.O. Box 583399, Minneapolis, MN 55458.11ChexSystems. Security Freeze Information You can choose a temporary lift for a date range, a lift for a specific company, or a permanent removal.
The National Consumer Telecom & Utilities Exchange (NCTUE) tracks payment history for phone, cable, and utility accounts. Some providers check NCTUE when you sign up for new service. Manage an NCTUE freeze through its consumer portal or by phone at 866-349-5185. A temporary lift at NCTUE can take up to three business days, so plan ahead if you’re switching utility providers or starting a new cell phone contract.
Removing SSA’s Block Electronic Access
If the freeze you’re thinking of is on your Social Security Administration account rather than your credit, that’s Block Electronic Access. It prevents anyone, including you, from viewing or changing your personal information through SSA’s website or automated phone system.12Social Security Administration. How You Can Help Us Protect Your Social Security Number and Keep Your Information Safe It has nothing to do with credit bureaus and doesn’t affect credit applications. It protects your benefits records, earnings history, and related government data.
To remove the block, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY: 1-800-325-0778) and verify your identity over the phone. There’s no way to toggle this block through the my Social Security online portal. It’s phone-only in both directions. Once removed, you regain online access to your benefits statements, direct deposit settings, and account information.
