How to Unblock Your Social Security Number: SSA, E-Verify, IRS

How you unblock your Social Security number depends entirely on what kind of block is on it. Some blocks you placed yourself, like an E-Verify Self Lock or a my Social Security account restriction. Others were imposed after suspected fraud, an IRS identity-theft flag, or an erroneous death record. And some aren’t really SSA blocks at all, but credit freezes that people mistake for one. Each situation has its own fix, and using the wrong one wastes days you may not have.

Figure Out Which Block You Have

Before you do anything else, match your symptom to the block behind it:

  • You can’t sign in to my Social Security or change direct deposit online: an SSA eServices block or direct deposit fraud prevention block, placed voluntarily on your account.
  • A new employer says E-Verify returned a mismatch, or you know you locked your number yourself: an E-Verify Self Lock or a Tentative Nonconfirmation.
  • Your tax return was rejected, benefits stopped, or banks say you’re deceased in federal records: an erroneous death record in the SSA’s Death Master File.
  • The IRS rejected your e-filed return saying one was already filed, or you’re getting notices about wages that aren’t yours: tax-related identity theft, not an SSA block.
  • A lender says your credit file can’t be pulled: a credit bureau security freeze, which is separate from anything the SSA controls.

Remove an SSA Account or Direct Deposit Block

If you (or a representative) added an eServices block or a direct deposit fraud prevention block to your my Social Security account, only you can remove it, and the SSA will not lift it online.1Social Security Administration. Fraud Prevention and Reporting Contact your local Social Security field office, in person or by phone, and request the removal. Bring a current government-issued photo ID if you’re visiting in person.

Once the office processes the request, your online access and the ability to change direct deposit or contact details are restored. Before you lift the block, confirm the reason you placed it is actually resolved. Reopening the account also reopens whatever exposure prompted the block in the first place.

Unlock Your SSN in E-Verify

The Self Lock in myE-Verify prevents your SSN from being run through E-Verify. It lasts one year, and you’ll be offered the chance to extend it 30 days before it expires.2E-Verify. myE-Verify If you’re starting a job with an E-Verify employer, you need to unlock the number before your first day, or the employer’s check will come back as a mismatch.

Log into your myE-Verify account and unlock the SSN through the portal. You can do this at any time. When you originally set the lock, you chose three challenge questions, and you may be asked to answer them again if the lock triggers a Tentative Nonconfirmation during a verification.3E-Verify. Self Lock If you don’t yet have a myE-Verify account, create one and verify your identity first.

If E-Verify Already Returned a Mismatch

A Tentative Nonconfirmation comes with a hard deadline. You have 8 federal government working days to visit an SSA field office and start resolving it. Miss that window and the case becomes a Final Nonconfirmation, and your employer may terminate you.4E-Verify. Referral Date Confirmation – Social Security Administration Tentative Nonconfirmation

Before you go, get the SSA TNC Further Action Notice from your employer. You’ll need it at the field office. The mismatch may come from a Self Lock you forgot about, a name that doesn’t match SSA records, or a data entry error, and the field office will identify which. Correct an Erroneous Death Record

Being wrongly listed as deceased is the most disruptive block on this list. It can stop your Social Security benefits, cause tax returns to be rejected, freeze bank accounts, and fail identity checks across any system that cross-references SSA data. Go to your local Social Security office as soon as possible.6Social Security Administration. What Should I Do If I Am Incorrectly Listed as Deceased in Social Security’s Records?

Bring at least one current, unexpired, original form of identification. The SSA accepts a passport, driver’s license, military record, health insurance card (not Medicare), marriage or divorce record, or a certified copy of a medical record.6Social Security Administration. Clear a Tax-Related IRS Flag on Your SSN

When someone files a fraudulent return using your SSN, the IRS may flag the number. The signs: your e-filed return is rejected because one was already submitted under your SSN, you get transcripts you didn’t request, or you receive IRS notices about wages from an employer you never worked for.

If any of that happens and you haven’t received a specific IRS letter (5071C, 4883C, or 5747C), file Form 14039, the Identity Theft Affidavit. You can submit it online through the IRS or through the FTC, which forwards it electronically to the IRS.8Internal Revenue Service. When to File an Identity Theft Affidavit If you did receive one of those letters, follow the instructions in the letter instead of filing the affidavit.

After the issue is resolved, request an Identity Protection PIN from the IRS. This six-digit number prevents anyone else from filing a return under your SSN, and anyone with an SSN or ITIN who can verify their identity is eligible.9Internal Revenue Service. Get an Identity Protection PIN The fastest way in is through your IRS online account. If you can’t set one up and your adjusted gross income was below $84,000 (or $168,000 for married filing jointly), submit Form 15227 and verify by phone; the PIN arrives by mail within four to six weeks. As a last resort, book an in-person appointment at a Taxpayer Assistance Center with two forms of ID. IP PINs change every year.

Lift a Credit Bureau Security Freeze

A credit freeze is not an SSA block. It stops new creditors from pulling your credit report and blocks most new accounts from being opened in your name. Placing and lifting a freeze is free at Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion under federal law.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

To lift a freeze, use the PIN or password issued when you placed it. Each bureau has an online portal and automated phone system where you enter the code and choose a temporary lift (for a set period or a specific creditor) or permanent removal. Federal law requires the bureau to act within one hour for requests made online or by phone. Mailed requests get three business days after receipt.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 US Code 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

Lost your PIN? Each bureau’s site has a replacement PIN request, but you’ll go through extra identity verification, including questions about past loans, previous addresses, and other financial history. A recent utility bill or bank statement helps if the automated questions fail and you end up in manual verification.

Lifting a Freeze on a Minor’s File

If you froze your child’s credit file, lifting it takes a written request from a parent or legal guardian. You’ll need documents verifying your own identity, the child’s identity (typically a copy of the child’s Social Security card and birth certificate), and proof that you’re authorized to act on the child’s behalf, such as a birth certificate, court order, or valid power of attorney.

Freeze vs. Lock

Credit bureaus also sell “credit lock” products, and the two are easy to mix up. A freeze is governed by federal and state law, so if a thief gets around it you have statutory protections. A lock is a private contract, often with arbitration clauses and terms that limit your legal options. Freezes are always free. Lock products sometimes carry a monthly fee, especially bundled with credit monitoring. If you’re deciding between them, a freeze gives you stronger legal footing at no cost; a lock’s main appeal is that some bureaus let you toggle it through an app faster than the one-hour statutory window for a freeze lift.

What to Expect After the Block Is Lifted

Once the SSA resolves an administrative hold or completes a correction, you’ll receive a formal notification letter at your registered mailing address confirming the block has been lifted and your number is active for federal and employment verification. If you sent documents by mail rather than visiting in person, use certified mail with a return receipt so you have a tracking record while your original ID is in government custody. Online self-service replacement card requests are typically processed within 5 to 10 business days; mailed applications can take 2 to 4 weeks.11Social Security Administration.
