How to Take Your Car Off SORN: Insurance, MOT, Tax, and V5C

To take your car off SORN, you tax it with the DVLA. Taxing the vehicle automatically cancels the Statutory Off Road Notification, but the DVLA’s system will only let you do it once valid insurance and a current MOT are in place. So the job has three steps in a fixed order: arrange insurance, get an MOT if the old one has expired, then tax the car online, by phone, or at a Post Office.

Why the Order Matters

You cannot tax a SORN vehicle until the DVLA’s records show valid insurance and a current MOT. And you cannot legally drive to an MOT appointment without insurance. That fixes the sequence:

  • Arrange at least third-party insurance before the car touches a public road for any reason, including the drive to the test centre.
  • Book and pass the MOT if the certificate has expired.
  • Tax the vehicle. The SORN is cancelled the moment the tax goes through.1GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN

Do these out of order and you’ll either fail the online checks at the tax stage or break the law on the way to the test.

Arranging Insurance First

Motor insurance is a legal requirement to drive on UK roads, and the minimum is third-party cover.2GOV.UK. Vehicle Insurance – Overview There is no exception for short trips or the journey to a pre-booked MOT. Driving uninsured carries a fixed penalty of £300 and six points, or an unlimited fine if the case reaches court.

Under Continuous Insurance Enforcement, the DVLA cross-checks its vehicle register against the Motor Insurers’ Database, and a SORN is the only lawful way to keep a vehicle without insurance.3GOV.UK. Vehicle Enforcement Policy The moment you tax the vehicle, that protection ends and the insurance requirement kicks in.

When you get a quote, tell the insurer the car has been on SORN. Some will want to know how long it has been stored and whether it has a current MOT before they’ll cover it.

Booking and Passing the MOT

Any vehicle over three years old needs a valid MOT certificate.4GOV.UK. Getting an MOT – When to Get an MOT If your MOT has expired while the car sat on SORN, the only lawful use of a public road is driving to or from a pre-booked MOT or other testing appointment.1GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN Any other trip with an expired MOT while on SORN is an offence, and even that permitted journey needs valid insurance.

The maximum MOT fee for a car is £54.85, though garages often charge less.5GOV.UK. Getting an MOT – MOT Costs If the car fails, the SORN exception only covers the drive to and from the test itself, not general trips to a mechanic, so it’s often easier to have any repairs done at the same garage. You can check your car’s current MOT status by registration number on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service.

Taxing the Vehicle

Once insurance and MOT are confirmed, taxing is the step that actually cancels the SORN. You have three options.

Online

The GOV.UK vehicle tax service is the quickest route. You’ll need one of these reference numbers:

  • The 11-digit number on your V5C logbook, if you’re the current registered keeper.
  • The 16-digit number on a V11 vehicle tax reminder.
  • The 12-digit number on the new keeper slip (V5C/2) if you’ve just bought the car.

The system checks for valid MOT and insurance before it lets you pay.6GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder You can pay by debit card, credit card, or Direct Debit. Paying every six months or monthly by Direct Debit costs slightly more over the year than paying annually.

By Phone

The DVLA runs a 24-hour automated line that accepts the same reference numbers. Direct Debit isn’t available by phone, so have a debit or credit card ready.

At a Post Office

You can tax in person at a Post Office that handles vehicle tax. Bring your V5C or new keeper slip, and be ready to show MOT evidence if it applies.6GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder

What you pay depends on when the car was first registered and its CO2 emissions, and if the car had a list price above £40,000 when new (or £50,000 for zero-emission vehicles) an additional charge applies for five years from the second licence.7GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax A car coming back off SORN will normally be on the standard rate rather than a first-year rate.

If You’ve Lost Your V5C Logbook

Cars that have been off the road for years often have missing paperwork. If you can’t find your V5C, apply for a replacement using form V62.8GOV.UK. Apply for a Vehicle Registration Certificate – Form V62 The form is print-only and must be posted. If none of the logbook details need changing, you can also apply for a duplicate V5C online through GOV.UK and tax the vehicle at the same time.

You can still tax at a Post Office without the original V5C, provided you bring a completed V62 as proof you’ve applied for a replacement. Don’t wait for the new logbook to arrive before doing anything else. Get insurance sorted and the MOT booked while the replacement is in the post.

Preparing a Car That’s Been Sitting

Paperwork is only half the job. Before the MOT, spend an hour on the basics. Reconnect and fully charge the battery. Check coolant, brake fluid, and engine oil, and top up anything low. Look at the tyres for cracking, flat spots, and correct pressure. Test the brakes gently at low speed before going anywhere, because pads corrode and discs rust during storage.

Look underneath for fluid leaks and confirm that all lights, indicators, and wipers work. These are the things a tester will fail you on, and catching them at home saves a retest fee and a second trip.

Confirming the SORN Is Cancelled

After you tax the vehicle, the SORN ends automatically, but records can take up to two working days to update. You can check the tax status, SORN status, and MOT expiry date at any time on the GOV.UK vehicle enquiry service using the registration number.9GOV.UK. Check if a Vehicle is Taxed To confirm insurance is showing on the national database, use the separate askMID service.

There is no paper tax disc to display. Enforcement runs through Automatic Number Plate Recognition cameras that check plates against DVLA records in real time.10GOV.UK. Direct Debit and Abolition of the Tax Disc

Penalties If You Skip a Step

Driving a SORN vehicle on a public road for anything other than a pre-booked MOT or testing appointment can lead to prosecution and a fine of up to £2,500.1GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN The DVLA can also clamp and impound untaxed vehicles found on public roads, and releasing a clamped car means paying additional fees on top of any fine.11GOV.UK. DVLA Enforcement of Vehicle Tax, Registration and Insurance Offences Impounded vehicles that aren’t reclaimed promptly can be crushed or sold.

Driving without insurance is a fixed penalty of £300 and six points, or unlimited fines in court. Driving without a valid MOT can bring a fine of up to £1,000. The penalties stack, so someone caught driving a SORN car that is untaxed, uninsured, and without an MOT could face all three at once. That is the practical reason to keep the order straight: insurance, MOT, tax, and only then back on the road.
