Indian pensioners living outside the country have two ways to submit a life certificate online from abroad: generate a Digital Life Certificate through the Jeevan Pramaan app using a biometric scanner, or apply through the nearest Indian embassy or consulate. Both must reach your pension disbursing agency by the annual deadline of November 30 to keep payments flowing without interruption.
Which route works for you depends on whether you can get hold of a fingerprint or iris scanner and whether your Indian mobile number can still receive text messages where you live. If either of those is a problem, the embassy route is usually the more dependable choice.
What You Need for the Jeevan Pramaan Route

- Your 12-digit Aadhaar number, or an Aadhaar Virtual ID if you prefer not to share the full number.
- Your Pension Payment Order (PPO) number from your pension documents.
- The name of the bank that disburses your pension and your account number.

- A STQC-certified fingerprint or iris scanner that works with the Jeevan Pramaan software. The list of supported devices is on the Jeevan Pramaan portal.
The biometric device is where overseas pensioners get stuck most often. These scanners are not common household items, and sourcing one in your host country takes planning. Check the supported device list before buying anything.
The Face Authentication App Does Not Work Outside India
Jeevan Pramaan also offers a Face Authentication app that uses a smartphone camera instead of an external scanner. That would be the easiest option, except that the Jeevan Pramaan FAQ states plainly that the face authentication app can only be used within India and is not available outside the country.3Jeevan Pramaan. Generating the Certificate Through Jeevan Pramaan
Download the Jeevan Pramaan client software for your PC or the mobile app for your phone or tablet from the official website or an authorized app store.4Jeevan Pramaan. Open the app and choose the option to generate a new life certificate. Enter your Aadhaar number, mobile number, PPO number, pension type, sanctioning authority, disbursing agency, and bank account number.2Jeevan Pramaan. The app then asks you to scan your fingerprint or iris. If authentication succeeds, the app displays your life certificate with a unique Jeevan Pramaan ID, and an SMS confirmation goes to your registered mobile number.2Jeevan Pramaan. Receiving OTPs on an Indian Number From Abroad
The whole Jeevan Pramaan process depends on receiving text messages on your registered Indian mobile number. If your Indian SIM has gone inactive or cannot receive texts where you live, the process stalls before it starts. Sort this out well ahead of the November deadline.
The most reliable approach is keeping your Indian SIM active with international roaming enabled. Contact your Indian carrier and confirm that inbound SMS delivery works while roaming. Prepaid users should check that the account has sufficient balance, because some providers stop delivering texts when the balance hits zero. Test it before the submission window opens by asking someone in India to send you a message.
If carrying a physical Indian SIM is not practical, some Indian carriers offer eSIM profiles tied to your existing number, though rules for remote provisioning vary and some still require in-person verification in India. A paid SMS-forwarding service that receives texts on an Indian virtual number and relays them to your overseas number or email is another option. Use reputable providers only, and confirm beforehand that OTPs arrive intact.
Submitting Through an Indian Embassy or Consulate
If the app route is not workable, Indian embassies and consulates issue life certificates directly, and this is what many overseas pensioners actually use. It requires no biometric device and no Aadhaar authentication.
By post, embassies typically require a recent medical certificate from a registered doctor confirming you are alive, a notarized copy of your passport, proof of residence in the host country, and a copy of your pension book or PPO documentation, submitted with a miscellaneous application form.6Embassy of India, Washington D.C. Expect around ten working days for processing once the embassy receives your documents, so add postal transit on top of that.
If you go in person, requirements are lighter. Downloading and Keeping Proof
After a successful Jeevan Pramaan submission, your certificate sits in a central repository that both you and your pension disbursing agency can access.1Jeevan Pramaan. The November 30 Deadline and What Happens If You Miss It
The annual deadline for life certificate submission is November 30. Pensioners aged 80 and above can begin submitting from October 1; everyone else has the full November window. Miss the deadline and pension payments from December onward are stopped until the certificate is submitted.
The suspension is temporary. Once your life certificate reaches the pension system, payments resume and the arrears are released. If three years or more pass without any submission, reinstatement needs approval from the Central Pension Accounting Office, which takes considerably longer.
From abroad, the deadline deserves extra caution. If you are posting documents to an embassy, factor in the ten-day processing time plus postal transit; a late October or early November mailing gives you a buffer. If you are using Jeevan Pramaan, do not wait until the last week to discover that your Indian SIM has gone quiet or that your scanner is not on the supported list.
What Your Bank May Offer
Some pension disbursing banks run their own digital channels for NRI pensioners. Services available inside India, such as doorstep banking for life certificates, generally do not extend to overseas addresses. Ask your specific bank what it offers for pensioners abroad. In some cases, banks accept life certificates issued by Indian embassies directly, without any Jeevan Pramaan step.
Whichever route you use, keep your contact details current with your pension authority. A changed phone number or email causes missed reminders and failed OTPs at exactly the wrong time of year.
