To stop Earnin from taking money out of your bank account, cancel any pending cash out in the app, revoke your debit authorization with Earnin in writing, and give your bank a stop payment order at least three business days before the next scheduled withdrawal. Federal law — specifically the Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E — gives you the right to shut off these debits regardless of what Earnin’s terms of service say.
Cancel a Pending Cash Out in the App
If the withdrawal you want to stop is tied to a cash out you just requested, open the Earnin app first. Standard-speed transfers move through the ACH system over one to two business days and can be canceled while their status still shows as “pending.” Once the status flips to “processing,” the ACH file has already left Earnin’s hands and the app can no longer pull it back.1EarnIn Help Center. Can I Cancel a Transfer
Lightning Speed transfers are a different story. They usually land in your account within minutes and cannot be canceled. The one exception: if a Lightning Speed transfer is delayed more than 30 minutes, Earnin can cancel it and will refund the expedited fee.1EarnIn Help Center. Can I Cancel a Transfer If the money has already arrived, your focus shifts to stopping the repayment debit on payday.
Tell Your Bank to Stop the Debit
The step that actually blocks the money is a stop payment order at your bank. Your bank, not Earnin, releases the funds, so your bank is where the block has to be placed. Under federal law you can give this order orally or in writing, and it has to reach the bank at least three business days before the scheduled debit date.2GovInfo. 15 USC 1693e – Preauthorized Transfers3eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers
Business days exclude weekends and federal holidays. If payday is Monday, the latest you can notify the bank is the previous Wednesday. Miss that window and the bank is not required to block that particular debit, though you can still shut off everything after it.
If you call the order in by phone, the bank can require written confirmation within 14 days. The bank has to tell you about that requirement on the call and give you the address to send it to. If you don’t follow up in writing within 14 days, the oral order lapses and later debits can go through.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers
Revoke the Authorization, Not Just One Payment
Be explicit with the bank about what you want. Stopping a single transfer blocks one debit. Revoking Earnin’s authorization entirely tells the bank that no debit from Earnin is valid going forward, and the bank then has to block all future debits from that originator rather than wait for Earnin to stop sending them.4Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Regulation E 1005.10 – Preauthorized Transfers A written stop payment on a single transfer usually expires after six months and can be renewed; a full revocation should remain in effect, but confirm that with your bank.5HelpWithMyBank.gov. Notify Earnin in Writing
Federal law only requires you to notify the bank, but telling Earnin directly builds a paper trail and may stop the company from submitting debit requests at all. Use the in-app support chat to state that you are revoking your authorization for all future debits. Include your name, the bank account number connected to Earnin, and the date you originally authorized the debits.
Save the chat transcript or any confirmation number the app generates. If there is an email address or compliance contact available, send a duplicate written notice there. Your bank may ask for a copy of this revocation notice when it processes the stop payment order.
If a Debit Still Goes Through
If you gave your bank a valid stop payment order at least three business days ahead and the debit still cleared, the bank is liable for all damages that resulted, including any overdraft or returned-payment fees caused by the withdrawal.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693h – Liability of Financial Institutions
A debit that posts after you revoked authorization is an unauthorized electronic fund transfer. You have 60 days from the date the bank sends you the statement showing the charge to notify the bank of the error.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1693f – Error Resolution Give the bank your name and account number, point to the specific transaction, and explain that you had revoked Earnin’s authorization. If the bank refuses to make you whole, you can file a complaint with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
What Happens to Money You Still Owe
If you cut off the debits before Earnin recovers a cash out, you will be locked out of the service until the balance is paid. Earnin’s terms state that you have no legal obligation to repay the advance. The company has warranted that it will not pursue debt collection, sell the balance to a third-party collector, or report the unpaid amount to credit bureaus if a cash out goes unpaid on the scheduled date.
The practical consequence is losing access to Earnin going forward, not collections calls or a credit score hit. If you don’t plan to use the app again, the unpaid balance carries no further risk beyond the amount itself.
Close the Account and Cut the Data Link
Once the debits are stopped, close the account to prevent future attempts. In the app, go to Settings, then Account, and choose the option to deactivate or close the profile. Earnin requires your outstanding balance to be zero before it will let you close, so an unpaid cash out keeps the option grayed out until it is settled.
Closing the account cuts Earnin’s connection to your bank, but it may not fully remove the data link created through Plaid or another third-party aggregator. Visit Plaid’s consumer portal to see every app connected to your bank through Plaid and revoke access there. You can also ask your bank to block the third-party data connection directly. Keep the Earnin closure confirmation and any Plaid disconnection records in case a debit attempt appears later.
