How to Spot a Fake International Driver’s License

To spot a fake international driver’s license, check three things first: the format, the issuer, and the validity period. A real International Driving Permit (IDP) is a grey paper booklet, issued in the United States only by AAA or the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA), and valid for no more than one year from a U.S. issuer.¹ Anything sold as a plastic card, a multi-year credential, or a standalone “international driver’s license” is counterfeit.

One terminology note before anything else. There is no such thing as an “international driver’s license.” The correct document is an International Driving Permit, and it is a translation of your existing license, not a replacement for it. Sites that market a separate “license” are selling a fabricated product.²

What a Real IDP Looks Like

A genuine IDP is a multi-page booklet containing your name, photograph, and driving information translated into several languages so foreign police and rental agencies can read your credentials.³

It is never a standalone document. It only functions when carried with your valid, physical domestic driver’s license.¹ If someone tells you the document they sold you replaces your regular license, that alone tells you it is fraudulent.

Validity depends on the underlying treaty. Permits issued under the 1949 Geneva Convention are valid for a maximum of one year. Permits under the 1968 Vienna Convention can last up to three years. Either way, the IDP expires the moment your domestic license does, whichever comes first.³

Red Flags on the Document Itself

It Is a Plastic Card

This is the fastest tell. Real IDPs are paper booklets. Counterfeit operations produce plastic cards because a card feels more official to buyers who have never seen a legitimate permit. If it fits in a wallet slot like a credit card, it is not an IDP.

It Claims Five or Ten Years of Validity

No real IDP lasts longer than three years, and U.S.-issued ones are valid for one year. A document stamped with a five- or ten-year validity is a guaranteed fake. Long validity is a common selling point in scam listings because it makes the price feel worth it.

The Issuer Is Not AAA or AATA

In the United States, only two organizations are authorized by the U.S. Department of State to issue IDPs: the American Automobile Association (AAA) and the American Automobile Touring Alliance (AATA).¹ Any other issuing body on a U.S.-issued document means it is not legitimate. Other countries designate their own automobile associations or government agencies as sole authorized issuers.⁴

Print Quality Is Off

Blurry text, faded colors, uneven ink, and misspellings are common in counterfeits. Watch for misaligned sections, inconsistent fonts, and paper that feels unusually thin. A genuine IDP is produced by an established organization with standardized professional printing.

Details Do Not Match Your Domestic License

Every piece of information on the IDP should match the accompanying license exactly: name, date of birth, license number, and authorized vehicle categories. Any discrepancy points to forgery or tampering.

Red Flags on the Seller’s Website

The FTC has warned that scammers set up websites to sell counterfeit IDPs, sometimes at inflated fees, and that the documents they produce are worthless.² The same patterns show up across nearly all of them:

The site calls the product an “international driver’s license” rather than an International Driving Permit.
It does not require a valid domestic license. A real IDP cannot be issued without one.
It offers to process your application through a company other than AAA or AATA. The FTC states plainly that any such site is a scam.²
The price is suspicious. The standard AAA application fee is $20. A $5 offer is harvesting your data; a $150 offer is pocketing the margin on a worthless card.⁵

A Verification Checklist

If you are trying to confirm an IDP is real, run through these in order:

Confirm the format is a multi-page paper booklet, not a plastic card.
Confirm the issuer is AAA or AATA for a U.S.-issued permit, or the designated authority of the country of issue.
Compare every field against the domestic license: name, date of birth, license number, vehicle categories.
Check the validity dates. A U.S.-issued IDP should show one year from the effective date and cannot outlast the domestic license.³
Look for official seals or stamps from the issuing authority and a unique identification number. Missing or poorly reproduced stamps are a strong forgery indicator.

What Using a Fake Actually Costs You

A fake IDP is worse than useless. If foreign police determine the document is counterfeit, you can be detained, fined, and have the vehicle impounded. The FTC warns that a fake IDP “could cause legal problems and delays for you if you’re detained for using it to drive in a foreign country.”² In some countries, presenting a forged document to law enforcement is itself a criminal offense.

Your insurance is likely gone as well. Rental and travel insurance policies typically require a valid license and any legally required permits. Driving on a fake IDP means you were never legally authorized to operate the vehicle, and insurers routinely deny claims on that basis. An accident under those circumstances leaves you personally liable for the damages.

How to Get a Real One

A legitimate IDP is cheap and easy to obtain. Through AAA, you can apply online, in person at a branch, or by mail. The fee is $20.⁶ You will need a completed application, two passport-sized photos, and a valid U.S. driver’s license. Online applications require a digital photo and images of the front and back of your license. In-person applications at a AAA branch can often be processed same-day; mail applications take longer.

If You Already Bought a Fake

Do not try to use it. Handing a counterfeit document to a police officer abroad is handing over evidence of a crime you just committed.

Report the seller to the Federal Trade Commission at ReportFraud.ftc.gov.⁷ Include the website URL, any emails or receipts, and the document itself if you can. Then apply for a real IDP through AAA or AATA before you travel.¹
