To ship an airsoft gun legally in the United States, keep the blaze orange muzzle marking intact, confirm the destination city and state allow airsoft, choose a carrier whose policy accepts replica firearms, and pack the gun with its batteries or gas handled under the right hazmat rules. Miss any one of those and the package can be refused, returned, or seized.
Keep the Blaze Orange Tip On
Federal law makes it unlawful to ship, transport, or receive an airsoft gun unless it carries an approved marking. Under 15 U.S.C. § 5001, that marking is a blaze orange plug permanently inserted in the barrel and recessed no more than 6 millimeters from the muzzle, or a blaze orange band covering the full circumference of the barrel from the muzzle to a depth of at least 6 millimeters.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 5001 – Penalties for Entering Into Commerce of Imitation Firearms The Consumer Product Safety Commission enforces the rule under 16 CFR Part 1272.2Consumer Product Safety Commission. Airsoft Gun Regulations: Frequently Asked Questions for Airsoft Players
The statute names “air-soft guns firing nonmetallic projectiles” specifically. Traditional BB guns, paintball markers, and pellet guns fall outside the definition and don’t need the orange tip under federal law.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 5001 – Penalties for Entering Into Commerce of Imitation Firearms
Never remove the tip before shipping. If the original plug is missing or damaged, replace it before the box is sealed. Hardware stores and airsoft retailers sell orange barrel plugs. A missing tip puts you on the wrong side of federal law and gives any carrier grounds to refuse or open the package.3United States Consumer Product Safety Commission. Check the Destination Before You Ship
Federal law is the floor. Several cities go further and ban the sale, possession, or transfer of airsoft guns outright. Commonly restricted destinations include New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and San Francisco, all of which have municipal ordinances prohibiting or heavily restricting airsoft and air gun possession. State and local rules can add restrictions on top of the federal marking requirement.4U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Importing a BB Gun, Air Soft or Paintball Gun for My Personal Use
Confirm both the destination city and the state before printing a label. A shipment that’s legal where you drop it off can become the recipient’s problem the moment it crosses into a jurisdiction with a local ban. No carrier will check this for you.
Choose the Right Carrier
The three major carriers each treat airsoft differently from actual firearms, but each has quirks worth knowing before you pick a service.
UPS
UPS uses the federal Title 18 firearm definition, which does not include airsoft, so replicas are not classified as “Firearm Products” for UPS purposes.5UPS. How To Ship Firearms Even so, you cannot drop off any package containing firearms or ammunition at a UPS Store, third-party retailer, or UPS Access Point.6UPS. List of Prohibited and Restricted Items for Shipping Franchise store employees don’t always distinguish an airsoft gun from a real firearm, so a staffed UPS Customer Center or a scheduled pickup avoids that friction. International UPS shipments of replicas require a negotiated contract.
FedEx
FedEx explicitly lists replica firearms among items not considered firearms and shippable using any FedEx service.7FedEx Shipping Guidelines. FedEx Firearm Shipments No special firearm procedures, no separate declaration. This is the most straightforward option for most domestic shipments.
USPS
USPS classifies airsoft guns as “air guns,” which it defines as devices that expel projectiles using compressed air or other gas. Air guns are not regulated as firearms by USPS unless they incorporate the frame or receiver of an actual firearm.8Postal Explorer. Publication 52 – Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail – Section 431.7 Two Adult Signature triggers matter for airsoft shippers: air guns that can be concealed on the person (pistol-style replicas), and air guns with a muzzle velocity of 400 feet per second or more.9Postal Explorer. Publication 52 – Hazardous, Restricted, and Perishable Mail – Section 432 Mailability Many airsoft rifles run 350 to 400 fps, and some sniper replicas exceed 400 fps, so check the spec before deciding whether Adult Signature applies.
Pack the Gun to Ship
Make the gun inert first. Remove the magazine, clear the chamber, disconnect the battery on electric models, and detach any gas or CO2 cartridge. If the gun breaks down easily, do it. A disassembled gun has a smaller recognizable profile and its fragile parts (optics, outer barrel) travel better.
Wrap the gun and every loose component in bubble wrap or foam. Put everything inside a rigid inner container. A hard case is ideal; a sturdy cardboard insert works. Set the inner container inside a plain outer shipping box, and fill every gap with packing material. Shake the sealed box. If anything moves, add more padding. A shifting airsoft gun can crack its own body or punch through the packaging.
Confirm the orange tip is firmly attached before you close the box. Keep the outer carton plain. Don’t use manufacturer packaging with product images. A neutral description like “sporting equipment” or “toy replica” is reasonable for domestic labeling. UPS in fact requires that firearm product labeling not identify the contents, and while airsoft isn’t a firearm product for UPS, the same reasoning applies: advertising what’s inside invites theft and alarmed handling.5UPS. How To Ship Firearms
Batteries and Gas Are the Hazmat Piece
The gun itself is easy. The power source is where most complications come from, because the Department of Transportation regulates lithium batteries and compressed gases as hazardous materials.
Lithium Batteries
Electric airsoft guns run on lithium-ion or lithium-polymer batteries. When installed in the device they power, USPS allows domestic shipment by air or surface as long as each cell stays under 20 watt-hours and each battery under 100 watt-hours, with a limit of 8 cells or 2 batteries per package. Most airsoft batteries fall well within those limits. If the battery is installed in the gun and you have no more than four cells or two batteries, you’re exempt from the DOT lithium-battery mark on the outside of the package.10Postal Explorer. USPS Packaging Instruction 9D – Lithium Metal and Lithium-ion Cells and Batteries Domestic The simplest path is to leave the battery installed but disconnected and ship by ground to sidestep the stricter air-transport marking rules.
CO2 Cartridges
Small 12-gram CO2 cartridges are non-flammable compressed gas (DOT Class 2.2). They qualify for limited-quantity exceptions when shipped by ground, so they don’t need full hazmat shipping papers if the package stays under 66 pounds and the outer packaging is marked appropriately.11eCFR. 49 CFR 173.306 – Limited Quantities of Compressed Gases FedEx Ground accepts non-flammable gas shipments within the contiguous United States under these conditions.12FedEx Ground Package Systems Inc. FedEx Ground Hazardous Materials Shipping Guide Do not ship CO2 by air unless you’re fully compliant with IATA dangerous goods rules. Ground is the practical option for individuals.
Green Gas
Green gas is a propane-based blend, classified as flammable compressed gas (DOT Class 2.1). That flammable status means stricter handling than CO2. UPS and FedEx Ground accept flammable gas shipments domestically, but air shipment is heavily restricted. For a gas-blowback pistol, remove the green gas canister and ship it separately under carrier hazmat procedures, or leave it out entirely. The recipient can usually buy green gas locally for less than a hazmat surcharge.
If Something Goes Wrong
Carrier liability for airsoft has fine print worth reading before you ship. UPS’s terms state it isn’t liable for loss or damage to packages containing items shippers are prohibited from shipping or that UPS has a right to refuse.13UPS. UPS Tariff/Terms and Conditions of Service – United States Because UPS lists replica weapons as accepted only on a contractual basis, a casual shipper without a UPS contract may find a damage claim denied on the ground that the item shouldn’t have been accepted at all. FedEx’s claims process runs through an online workflow tied to a logged-in FedEx account.14FedEx. File a Claim Since FedEx doesn’t classify replicas as prohibited, a claim there stands on firmer footing.
Whatever the carrier, photograph the gun’s condition before you pack it, save your proof of value, and keep the tracking number. For a high-value gun, third-party shipping insurance is often more reliable than a carrier’s declared-value coverage.
If the Gun Is Coming From Overseas
Importing changes the risk profile. U.S. Customs and Border Protection can seize any toy, look-alike, or imitation firearm that arrives without proper markings. Seizures happen under 19 U.S.C. § 1595a(c), and getting the property back requires a formal petition.15U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Mitigation Guidelines: Fines, Penalties, Forfeitures and Liquidated Damages
Even with relief, you’ll owe seizure and storage costs at minimum. A marking waiver after seizure carries a penalty of 1 to 10 percent of the domestic value (with a $100 floor) on top of storage. A first-time violation where the gun can be brought into compliance runs 10 to 30 percent of the transaction value. Airsoft guns that are seized and forfeited are destroyed. There’s no auction, no return.15U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Mitigation Guidelines: Fines, Penalties, Forfeitures and Liquidated Damages
Before buying from an international seller, confirm the gun ships with a compliant blaze orange tip already installed. Some overseas retailers sell airsoft without the marking because their home country doesn’t require it, and that becomes your problem the moment the package reaches U.S. customs.
