How to Set Up a Travel Notice Form With Your Bank

To set up a travel notice with your bank, log in to the mobile app or online banking site, find the card management or travel settings menu, and enter your travel dates, destinations, and the cards you plan to use. You can also call the number on the back of your card. Before you do any of that, check whether your bank still accepts travel notices at all — Chase, Capital One, and Bank of America have dropped them and now rely on automated fraud monitoring instead.

First, Check Whether Your Bank Still Wants One

Fraud detection has improved enough that several large issuers no longer take travel notices. Chase says it “no longer accepts travel notices” and that there is “no need to call before traveling,” regardless of destination.1Chase. Do I Need to Notify a Credit Card Company When Traveling? Capital One says there is “no need to tell Capital One about your travel plans, even if you’re traveling internationally.”2Capital One. Should You Set a Credit Card Travel Notice? Bank of America tells customers, “You no longer need to let us know when you travel. We monitor your accounts and will send automatic alerts if we detect suspicious activity.”3Bank of America. Other banks still want to hear from you. Wells Fargo recommends notifying them of upcoming travel dates “so we do not inadvertently freeze your accounts if we observe transactions happening in a new location.”4Wells Fargo. If you carry cards from more than one bank, check each issuer separately. Log in to the app and look for a travel notice option. If it is not there, the bank has retired the feature.

Information to Gather Before You File

Have these details ready before you start. Guessing at any of them can leave a card unprotected on the wrong day.

  • Travel dates. The departure and return dates define the window during which the fraud system expects charges outside your normal area. At U.S. Bank, the maximum span for a single notification is 90 days after the start date, so a longer trip needs a second notice filed partway through.8U.S. Bank. Can I Use My Debit or Credit Card While Traveling Internationally?
  • Destinations. List every country or region you plan to visit, including layover cities where you might buy something.
  • Cards to include. Decide which credit and debit cards you plan to use, and select each one during setup. At U.S. Bank, you check a box for every card that will be used on the trip.5U.S. Bank. How Do I Add, Edit, or Delete a Travel Notification on My Card?
  • Contact information. Confirm the bank has a current mobile number and email address on file. If a charge still trips a fraud alert, that is how they will reach you.

How to File the Notice

Most banks offer three ways in: the mobile app, the online banking site, or a phone call. Menu labels vary, but the flow is similar.

Mobile App

Open the app and look under card management or account services. At U.S. Bank, you open the main menu, choose “Manage cards,” select the card you are traveling with, and then choose “Travel notification.”5U.S. Bank. How Do I Add, Edit, or Delete a Travel Notification on My Card? Other banks place the option under headings like “Debit Card Features” or “Security.” You pick your dates from a calendar, enter your destinations, check the cards you want covered, and submit.

Online Banking Website

Log in and navigate to the same card management or travel settings area. The web version mirrors the app: date selection, destination entry, card selection, submit. A confirmation page or email usually follows.

Phone

To speak with someone, call the number printed on the back of your card.2Capital One. Should You Set a Credit Card Travel Notice? Have your card number, travel dates, and destination list ready. A phone call is also the right route if you want to request a temporary increase to your daily ATM withdrawal limit, since most banks handle that through a representative rather than self-service.

Updating the Notice During Your Trip

The notice expires on the return date you entered. If your plans change and the trip stretches longer, update the notice before the original end date. On banks that use online portals, you edit the notice the same way you created it. If you cannot get online, call customer service. Letting a notice lapse while you are still abroad can lead to a decline the next time the system sees a charge in an unexpected place.

No bank charges a fee for filing or updating a travel notice.

What a Travel Notice Does Not Cover

A travel notice tells the fraud system to expect purchases where you are going. It does not lower any fee and does not guarantee that every card will work.

Foreign transaction fees still apply. They typically range from 1 to 3 percent of each purchase, with many banks charging close to 3 percent, and the fee is baked into each charge rather than listed separately.9Bankrate. A Guide to Foreign Transaction Fees Some cards waive the fee entirely.10Mastercard. No Foreign Transaction Fee Credit Cards

Declines can still happen. Fraud algorithms weigh factors beyond location, so an unusually large purchase or a rapid string of charges can trigger a hold even with a notice on file. Experienced travelers carry at least two cards from different banks so that if one gets blocked, the other keeps working, and they keep roughly $100 to $200 in U.S. cash as a last resort.11Rick Steves’ Europe.
