How to Send Your FAFSA to Schools and Confirm Receipt

To send your FAFSA to schools, enter each school’s six-character Federal School Code in the schools section of the form. You can list up to 20 schools when you file online, or up to 10 on the paper PDF.1Federal Student Aid. Filling Out the FAFSA Form Once your application is processed, each listed school typically gains access to your data within a day, and you can add more schools later through the correction process on StudentAid.gov.

Find Each School’s Federal School Code

Every college, university, and career school that participates in federal financial aid has a unique six-character code assigned by the Department of Education.2Knowledge Center. Federal School Code Lists The fastest way to look one up is the Federal School Code Search tool on StudentAid.gov, which lets you search by name, city, or state.

Watch out for multi-campus systems. Each campus usually has its own code, and entering the wrong one means the aid office at the campus you actually plan to attend never sees your application. Confirm the code matches the specific location where you intend to enroll.

Add Schools When You File

Have your list of codes ready before you start the form. In the schools section, type each six-character code into the field provided, and the system will display the school’s name and address so you can confirm you picked the right one. If you don’t have a code on hand, the built-in search tool lets you look up schools by name and location.

Pick a Housing Plan for Each School

For every school you list, the FAFSA asks whether you plan to live on campus, off campus, or with a parent.3Federal Student Aid. Housing Plans The choice affects how that school calculates your cost of attendance. Living with a parent typically produces a lower cost figure, which can reduce the total aid offered. On-campus or off-campus selections produce higher estimated living costs and may increase your aid eligibility.

Does the Order of Schools Matter

For federal aid, including Pell Grants, federal loans, and work-study, the order you list schools in does not affect your eligibility. Some states, though, use the order of in-state schools on your FAFSA to set priority for state grants. If you’re applying for state aid, check your state’s rules before you submit. When unsure, list the in-state school you’re most likely to attend first.

One thing not to worry about: schools cannot see which other institutions you listed. Each school only receives the data relevant to its own application.

Add or Swap Schools After You’ve Submitted

You don’t need to file a new FAFSA to reach more schools. Once your original submission is processed, log in to StudentAid.gov, open your processed FAFSA from the “My Activity” section of your dashboard, choose “Make a Correction” from the “Actions” menu, and add the new codes.4Federal Student Aid. If you’ve already hit the 20-school limit and need to add another, you’ll have to remove one to make room. Deadlines That Control Your Timing
