To see your FAFSA results, log in at StudentAid.gov with your FSA ID, open the “My Activity” section of your dashboard, and select the FAFSA form for the award year you want to review. Once the status reads “Processed,” you can open your FAFSA Submission Summary, which shows your Student Aid Index (SAI), your estimated Federal Pell Grant, and whether you’ve been flagged for verification. Online submissions usually finish processing in one to three days, so most applicants can check back within a few days of filing.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Submission Summary
Use the same FSA ID username and password you used to sign the original application. If you’ve lost access, use the recovery tool on StudentAid.gov through your verified email or phone. Don’t create a second FSA ID; duplicate records will delay your application further.
What Each FAFSA Status Means
Only one status actually gives you results. The others tell you why you’re waiting.
- Draft: Your section is incomplete and hasn’t been submitted.
- In Progress: You signed your section, but the FAFSA hasn’t been submitted, usually because a contributor (parent or spouse) hasn’t finished their part.
- In Review: The form was submitted and is being processed. Results aren’t available yet.
- Processed: Your Submission Summary is ready to view, including your SAI and estimated aid.
- Action Required: Something needs to be fixed before processing can finish, such as a missing signature, an incomplete contributor section, or a data conflict.
- Closed: The FAFSA was never submitted and the federal deadline has passed.
The two statuses that trip people up are “In Progress” and “Action Required.” Both mean something is blocking your results, and the fix almost always involves a contributor completing their section or a data correction.2Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Frequently Asked Questions
The redesigned FAFSA treats parents, spouses, and stepparents as contributors, and each one has to independently create an FSA ID, log in, consent to the IRS data transfer, and sign their own section. Your FAFSA won’t process until every required contributor finishes.3Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 FAFSA Form Tax data consent is not optional. Every contributor, including non-tax-filers, must approve the transfer through the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange, and declining makes the student ineligible for federal aid entirely. If your FAFSA has sat in “In Progress” for days, ask your contributors directly whether they’ve finished.
How Long Processing Takes
Online FAFSA submissions typically process in one to three days.4Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Support When processing finishes, you’ll get an email letting you know your Submission Summary is ready.5Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA Process Paper FAFSAs take significantly longer, roughly seven to ten days for processing alone, plus mail time in each direction.
These timelines assume nothing is blocking the form. A FAFSA sitting in “Action Required” for three weeks isn’t a processing delay; it’s waiting on you or a contributor.
What the FAFSA Submission Summary Shows
The top of the Submission Summary displays an “Eligibility Overview” tab with the date your application was received, the date it was processed, and a four-digit Data Release Number (DRN) that your school’s financial aid office may ask for. Below that, three pieces of information matter most:
- Student Aid Index (SAI): A number from −1,500 to 999,999 reflecting your household’s financial situation. Schools use it to determine need-based aid.6Federal Student Aid. The Student Aid Index Explained
- Estimated Federal Pell Grant: If you qualify, the summary shows your estimated award amount.
- Verification flag: An asterisk next to your SAI means you’ve been selected for verification and your school will need additional documentation before releasing aid.
The summary also lists the schools you selected to receive your FAFSA data, your dependency status, and a record of what you reported. If your status is “Action Required” instead of “Processed,” the summary won’t display your SAI or estimated aid; it will explain what needs to be fixed.1Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Submission Summary

What Your SAI Means for Pell Grant Eligibility
The SAI replaced the old Expected Family Contribution (EFC) starting with the 2024–25 award year. Unlike the EFC, which bottomed out at zero, the SAI can go as low as −1,500. A negative SAI signals especially high financial need, which schools can use to prioritize limited grant funds like Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grants.7Federal Student Aid. Student Aid Index (SAI) and Pell Grant Eligibility
For the 2026–27 award year, the maximum Federal Pell Grant is $7,395 and the minimum is $740. Students with an SAI between −1,500 and zero qualify for the full maximum award. Above zero, the Pell Grant amount is calculated by subtracting your SAI from $7,395 and rounding to the nearest $5. If your SAI exceeds $14,790, twice the maximum Pell Grant, you’re ineligible for any Pell Grant.8Federal Student Aid. 2026-27 Federal Pell Grant Maximum and Minimum Award Amounts
Some students qualify for a maximum or minimum Pell Grant based on family size, income, and federal poverty guidelines rather than the SAI formula alone. Whatever the summary shows is an estimate; the final award comes from your school after they factor in your enrollment status and cost of attendance.9Federal Student Aid. If You See a Verification Asterisk
An asterisk next to your SAI means the Department of Education has selected your application for verification. Your school, not the federal government, runs the process, and no aid can be disbursed until it’s complete. Students are placed in one of three tracking groups:
- V1 (Standard): The most common group. Tax filers verify items like adjusted gross income, IRA distributions, and education credits. Non-tax-filers verify income earned from work and family size.
- V4 (Custom): Identity-focused. You must appear in person at your school with a valid government-issued photo ID and sign a Statement of Educational Purpose.
- V5 (Aggregate): Combines V1 and V4, financial documentation plus in-person identity verification.
Contact your school’s financial aid office as soon as you see the flag. Schools set their own deadlines for verification documents, and missing them can mean losing aid for the term.10Federal Student Aid. Verification, Updates, and Corrections
Fixing Errors After You See Your Results
If your Submission Summary shows something wrong, log into StudentAid.gov, open your processed FAFSA from “My Activity,” and choose “Make a Correction” from the “Actions” menu. If the status already says “Action Required,” you’ll see a prompt to start the correction directly.11Federal Student Aid. How Do I Correct My FAFSA Form
Students can edit any section of the FAFSA, but contributors can only correct their own section. If your correction changes something in a contributor’s section, that contributor has to log back in separately to re-sign and resubmit. The form won’t reprocess until they do.
To change your school list, use “Add or Remove Schools” under “Actions.” You can list up to 20 schools total; if you’re already at 20, you’ll need to remove one before adding another, and the removed school won’t automatically see any updates you make afterward.12Federal Student Aid. How Do I Add a College or Career School After Submitting the FAFSA Form
For the 2026–27 award year, the federal submission deadline is June 30, 2027, and corrections are accepted through September 12, 2027, at 11:59 p.m. Central time.13Federal Student Aid. FAFSA Deadlines
Why Your School’s Offer Will Look Different
The Submission Summary shows estimated federal aid. It is not your financial aid offer. Each school takes your federal data and combines it with its own institutional grants, scholarships, and campus work-study to build a complete package, which arrives through the school’s student portal or by mail, usually weeks after federal processing wraps up. Early decision admits tend to hear back in November or December, early action applicants between January and March, and regular decision students between March and May.14Federal Student Aid. How To Evaluate Your Aid Offers
So if your summary shows an estimated Pell Grant, that’s a starting point rather than a final number. The dollar amount you actually receive, and the total package around it, comes from each school separately.
