There is no public online calendar where you can pick a date and time to meet with the Social Security Administration, so “how to schedule a Social Security appointment online” really has two answers. Some online processes on ssa.gov will route you into self-scheduling an appointment when your request needs in-person follow-up. For everything else, you schedule by calling 1-800-772-1213 or your local field office. And before you do either, it’s worth checking whether the task you have in mind still requires an appointment at all, because many no longer do.1Social Security Administration. Self-Scheduling Through My Social Security
The closest thing to online booking happens inside a free “my Social Security” account. When you start a task online and the system determines it can’t finish the job remotely, the website walks you through self-scheduling an appointment at your local office to complete the process in person. The replacement Social Security card process is the clearest example: you begin online, and if the system can’t verify your identity remotely, it schedules you for an in-office visit to bring your documents.2Social Security Administration. To use this path, you need an account. You must be at least 18, have a valid Social Security number, and have a working email address. Identity verification runs through Login.gov or ID.me, both of which use two-factor authentication and may ask you to confirm details from past tax or financial records.3Social Security Administration. If any of those covers your reason for wanting an appointment, you’re likely done without one.
When You Still Have to Call
For any appointment that can’t be self-scheduled through an online process, you book by phone. Call SSA’s national number at 1-800-772-1213 Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. local time. The TTY line for callers who are deaf or hard of hearing is 1-800-325-0778.1Social Security Administration. Contact Social Security By Phone
The representative will decide whether your situation actually requires a scheduled visit or can be resolved right there on the phone. Not every call ends with a booking. The agency actively steers people toward digital services when the task allows it.
Calling your local field office directly is sometimes faster than the national line. SSA’s Field Office Locator at ssa.gov/locator returns the nearest office and its phone number when you enter your ZIP code or city.6Social Security Administration. Field Office Locator

Services That Always Require an Appointment
A few transactions can’t be completed digitally because they need original documents or in-person verification. Knowing this upfront saves you from starting an online process only to be told to come in.
- Legal name changes after a marriage, divorce, or court order require original documentation. You can start the replacement card process online, but if identity can’t be verified remotely, you’ll need to bring documents to an office.8Social Security Administration. Change Name with Social Security
- Supplemental Security Income (SSI) applications can’t be filed online and require a phone or in-person interview.
- Original Social Security numbers for first-time applicants, such as new immigrants or anyone never assigned a number, require an in-person visit with original identity documents.9Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card
- Complex situations like coordinating benefits across multiple records, disputing an overpayment, or handling representative payee issues generally need a scheduled discussion.
Starting online still helps in these cases. The information you enter carries over, so the in-person appointment is shorter.
Walk-Ins and Same-Day Exceptions
Field offices now run under an “Appointment Focused Service” model, so most visitors need a scheduled slot. Staff are instructed not to refuse in-person service to people who cannot make an appointment, or in situations where insisting on one doesn’t make sense, such as offices with light foot traffic or visitors who traveled a long distance.
Same-day service is available without an appointment in specific situations:
- Dire need, meaning an immediate financial emergency such as no money for food or shelter.
- Terminal illness affecting you or someone you’re helping.
- Active-duty military personnel, who receive priority.
- Vulnerable individuals facing barriers to phone appointments, including people experiencing harassment or trafficking situations.
- Time-sensitive claims where delay could affect benefit payments.
If none of those apply, walking in usually results in a scheduled future date rather than help on the spot. The office manager has discretion over exceptions.
Rescheduling or Canceling
Once an appointment is booked, changes have to go through a phone call. There is no online tool for rescheduling. Documents to Have Ready
Arriving without the right paperwork is the fastest way to lose the appointment slot and restart. SSA requires originals or copies certified by the issuing agency. Photocopies and notarized copies aren’t accepted, and everything must be current and unexpired.9Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card
For identity, SSA accepts a U.S. driver’s license, state-issued ID card, or U.S. passport. For a benefits appointment you’ll typically also need:
- An original or certified birth certificate.
- Proof of citizenship: a U.S. passport, Certificate of Naturalization, or Certificate of Citizenship. Non-citizens should bring a Permanent Resident Card or Employment Authorization Document.9Social Security Administration. Learn What Documents You Will Need to Get a Social Security Card
- Tax records: W-2 forms or self-employment tax returns from the most recent year.11Social Security Administration. Retirement Benefits – Publication No. 05-10035

If you’re missing something, call before the appointment. SSA maintains a list of substitutes for most standard requirements.
Avoiding Scheduling Scams
Scammers impersonate SSA, and “scheduling” is a common hook. SSA will never ask you to pay to schedule an appointment, and it will never request payment by gift card, prepaid debit card, wire transfer, or cryptocurrency. It will not ask for your Social Security number or financial information through social media or text.12Social Security Administration. Protect Yourself from Scams
SSA does send legitimate appointment-related text messages, but only from the number 64574 (or +15515257156 for U.S. territories), and any link in a real message directs to a secure ssa.gov page.13Social Security Administration.
