How to Request Your Money Transfer History: Western Union and MoneyGram

To request your money transfer history from Western Union, fill out the free online Consumer Activity Report Form (CARF) with a photo of your ID and the date range you want covered; MoneyGram has a parallel process called the Historical Transaction Request, reached through its help center. Western Union says to allow 24 hours for a response.1Western Union. Money Transfer History Request Form

What to Have Ready Before You Start

Gather these before opening the form:

  • A legible copy of the government-issued photo ID you used when sending or receiving transfers (passport, driver’s license, or equivalent). You’ll upload it directly.
  • The start and end dates for the period you want records on. This is the only transaction-specific detail actually required.
  • Your email, phone number, country, city, and street address.

Two fields look mandatory but aren’t. The Money Transfer Control Number (MTCN) printed on your receipt will narrow results to specific transfers, and the names of senders or recipients will filter results to those people, but Western Union treats both as optional.1Western Union. If someone else is filing for you, say an attorney or family member, they must upload a power of attorney along with their own ID.

Filling Out and Submitting the Western Union CARF Form

The CARF lives on Western Union’s global site as an interactive web form, not a downloadable PDF. The fields run in a logical order: identity, date range, optional filters, document upload.

Enter the earliest and latest dates you want covered. Fill in your email, phone, country, city, and street. State or province and zip code appear on the form but aren’t required. If you want results limited to specific transfers, type in the MTCNs or the names of your senders and recipients. Otherwise, skip to the upload area and drop in a clear scan or photo of your ID, or use the browse button to select the file.1Western Union. Money Transfer History Request Form

Before submitting, you certify that the information is true, that the request concerns your own transfers, and that you authorize Western Union to use your personal data to complete it.1Western Union. Requesting History From MoneyGram

MoneyGram runs a separate process. From the MoneyGram help center, go to service forms and select the Historical Transaction Request link.2MoneyGram. MoneyGram Service Forms MoneyGram specifically warns that its Secure File Transfer form is not the right path for historical requests and directs customers to the dedicated link instead. The information required is similar: identification, date range, and any reference numbers from your original receipts.

How Far Back Records Go

Federal law sets the retention window. Under the Bank Secrecy Act, money transmitters must retain records of fund transmittals of $3,000 or more for five years.3eCFR. 31 CFR 1010.430 – Nature of Records and Retention Period Transfers of currency or monetary instruments above $10,000 moving to or from outside the United States carry the same five-year requirement.4Federal Register. Renewal Without Change of Regulations Requiring Records To Be Made and Retained

In practice, you can generally pull records going back about five years. Older transfers may no longer sit in the company’s systems, and there is no legal obligation to produce them. If you need the records for taxes, a dispute, or any other formal use, request them well before the five-year window closes.

One deadline that runs on a shorter clock: if you spot an error in a remittance transfer, you have 180 days from the date the funds were supposed to be available to report it to the provider.5eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.33 – Procedures for Resolving Errors If you suspect something is wrong, get the records in time to use them.

How Long the Response Takes

Western Union’s own commitment on the CARF page is 24 hours.1Western Union. Money Transfer History Request Form Short date ranges often do come back quickly. Requests spanning several years or heavy transfer activity can take longer.

Privacy laws set the outer limits. The California Consumer Privacy Act gives businesses 45 calendar days to deliver requested information, extendable by another 45 days with notice. Customers covered by the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation have a baseline of one calendar month, with up to two additional months allowed for complex requests.6Information Commissioner’s Office. What Should We Consider When Responding to a Request

Why Requests Get Rejected

Most rejections trace back to a handful of preventable problems:

  • The uploaded ID is blurry or cropped. Use a scanner or shoot the photo in good light against a plain background.
  • The name on the ID doesn’t match the name used on the transfers. If your legal name has changed, include documentation such as a marriage certificate or court order.
  • The date range reaches past the five-year retention period, so there is nothing left to produce.
  • A third party filed the request without uploading a valid power of attorney and their own ID.

Fix those four things up front and the request usually clears without a follow-up.
