To request Social Security Expedited Reinstatement, call SSA at 1-800-772-1213 and tell the representative you want to file for expedited reinstatement of your SSDI or SSI disability benefits. You can also file in person at your local Social Security office or by mail using Form SSA-371 (SSDI) or SSA-372 (SSI).1Social Security Administration. Get Disability Back if Your Benefit Ended The request must be made within 60 months of the month your benefits ended because of work, and once you file, SSA can pay provisional cash benefits and continue your health coverage for up to six months while it reviews your case.2Social Security Administration. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR)
Confirm You Qualify Before You File
Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) is built for one specific situation: you had SSDI or SSI disability benefits, you returned to work, your earnings crossed the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) threshold and terminated your payments, and now the same or a related medical condition is stopping you from working again. You must meet all five of these conditions:
- You previously received SSDI or SSI disability benefits.
- Those benefits ended because your earnings exceeded the SGA level.
- You currently cannot work at the SGA level.
- Your current inability to work is due to the same impairment, or one related to it, that originally qualified you.
- You are filing within 60 months of the month your prior benefits ended.
SSA reviews the medical side under the medical improvement review standard, meaning it looks at whether your disabling condition has improved enough since your original approval for you to work. If it hasn’t, that supports reinstatement.3Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.001 – Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) Overview
The 2026 SGA Thresholds
For 2026, the monthly SGA limit is $1,690 for individuals with disabilities other than blindness and $2,830 for individuals who are blind.4Social Security Administration. What’s New in 2026? If you’re currently earning above the applicable amount, you won’t qualify for EXR until your earnings drop below it.
The Five-Year Clock
The 60-month window starts the month after your benefits terminated because of work. Miss it and EXR is off the table; you’d have to file a fresh disability application, which takes longer and offers no provisional benefits during the wait. Federal law allows SSA to extend the deadline for good cause, but SSA does not publish a detailed list of qualifying reasons.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 423 – Disability Insurance Benefit Payments If you’re close to the deadline, file first and gather documents afterward. You can supplement your file once the request is in.
Three Ways to File
EXR is not available as an online application. You have three filing routes:
- By phone at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778), Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. in most U.S. time zones. Tell the representative you want to file for expedited reinstatement; they’ll take your answers over the phone.
- In person at your local Social Security office.
- By mail using Form SSA-371 for SSDI or Form SSA-372 for SSI.6Social Security Administration. Form SSA-371 – Request for Reinstatement – Title II7Social Security Administration. Form SSA-372 – Request for Reinstatement – Title XVI
Phone is usually fastest, because a representative can complete the intake in real time and trigger provisional benefits on the spot.1Social Security Administration. Get Disability Back if Your Benefit Ended SSA may also ask you to complete a Work Activity Report or a Continuing Disability Review Report so it can look at your recent earnings and current medical status.
What to Have in Front of You
Before you call or mail your forms, pull together:
- Your Social Security number and a government-issued photo ID.
- Recent medical records, ideally from the last 12 months, showing your current condition.
- Names, addresses, and phone numbers for every doctor, specialist, therapist, and hospital treating you.
- Your work history since benefits ended: dates, employer names and addresses, and earnings.
- For SSI, information on your bank balances, other benefits, and any financial support you receive.
Keep copies of everything. If you mail documents, certified mail gives you proof of delivery.
Provisional Benefits While Your Case Is Reviewed
Starting the month you file, SSA can pay you temporary cash benefits and continue your Medicare (SSDI) or Medicaid (SSI) coverage for up to six months while it decides your case. If a decision comes sooner, provisional payments end then.2Social Security Administration. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR)
SSA states that provisional benefits “usually do not have to be paid back” if your request is denied.2Social Security Administration. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) There are exceptions. SSA may seek repayment for provisional benefits paid after the month you’re notified of a denial, or for months when you were actually performing SGA while collecting provisional payments.8Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.080 – Overpayments Report any work activity to SSA promptly during the provisional period.
One boundary worth knowing: provisional benefits generally do not extend to family members or dependents on your record. The limited exceptions cover certain previously entitled disabled widow or widower beneficiaries and childhood disability beneficiaries who independently qualify for EXR.9Social Security Administration. What SSA Looks at Medically
Your case goes to Disability Determination Services (DDS), the state agency that makes medical decisions for SSA. DDS answers two questions: Is your current impairment the same as or related to the one that originally qualified you? And are you still disabled under the medical improvement review standard?3Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.001 – Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) Overview
DDS compares your current records against the “comparison point decision,” the medical snapshot from your last favorable disability determination. If your current condition is unrelated to the original one, or if DDS finds enough medical improvement, your request will be denied. Thorough, recent records help. Gaps in treatment or vague notes give DDS less to work with.
If SSA Approves You: The Initial Reinstatement Period
Approval doesn’t drop you back into your prior benefit structure unchanged. You enter a 24-month Initial Reinstatement Period (IRP). During the IRP, your benefits are suspended for any month you perform SGA. There is no grace period for high-earning months as there was in your original trial work period. Health coverage does continue during months when cash benefits are suspended because of work.10Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.066 – Initial Reinstatement Period – Title II
The 24-month count only includes months in which you actually received a payable benefit. Months suspended for SGA don’t count, so the IRP can run past two calendar years if your work is intermittent. Once you accumulate 24 payable months, you earn a fresh set of work incentives:10Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.066 – Initial Reinstatement Period – Title II
- A new nine-month trial work period.
- A new 36-month extended period of eligibility.
- A new 60-month EXR filing window if benefits terminate again due to work.
- A new period of extended Medicare coverage.
The reset matters. EXR is designed so that another attempt at work does not permanently cost you the safety net.
If SSA Denies You
A denial can be appealed. You have 60 days from the date you receive the denial notice to request reconsideration using Form SSA-561-U2.11Social Security Administration. Request Reconsideration SSA presumes you received the notice five days after mailing, giving you an effective 65-day window from the mailing date. From reconsideration, the standard disability appeals ladder is available: an Administrative Law Judge hearing, then Appeals Council review.12Social Security Administration. POMS DI 28057.030 – Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) Appeals
Provisional benefit payments stop once SSA issues the denial, and you do not receive provisional benefits during the appeal.9Social Security Administration. POMS DI 13050.025 – Provisional Benefits for Title II Claimant A denied EXR request can also function as a new disability application, which may preserve your protective filing date while you appeal.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 42 USC 423 – Disability Insurance Benefit Payments
Set Up Electronic Payments
Federal benefit payments are issued electronically in most cases as of late 2025, with paper checks largely phased out. You’ll need to give SSA either a bank account for direct deposit or enroll in the Direct Express prepaid debit card program.13Social Security Administration. Social Security Transitions to Electronic Payments
SSDI recipients can manage direct deposit through a my Social Security online account. SSI recipients should call SSA at 1-800-772-1213. To enroll in Direct Express, call 1-800-333-1795 or visit usdirectexpress.com. If a hardship prevents you from receiving electronic payments, you can request a waiver through the U.S. Treasury at 1-877-874-6347.13Social Security Administration. Social Security Transitions to Electronic Payments Handling this before or right after you file avoids delays in receiving your provisional payments.
