To report crypto mining taxes on Form 1040, treat every mining reward as ordinary income equal to its U.S. dollar value on the day you received it, then report it either on Schedule C if you mine as a business or on Schedule 1 if you mine as a hobby. Any later sale of those coins is a separate taxable event reported on Form 8949 and Schedule D. The IRS treats digital assets as property, so the moment coins land in your wallet from a block reward or pool payout, their fair market value becomes gross income whether you sell, swap, or hold.1Internal Revenue Service. Notice 2014-21
Answer the Digital Assets Question First
Near the top of Form 1040 is a yes-or-no question asking whether you received, sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of any digital asset during the year. If you mined any cryptocurrency, the answer is “Yes.”2Internal Revenue Service. Digital Assets Checking “No” when you had mining activity is a misstatement on a federal return, and the IRS has said digital asset compliance is an enforcement priority. Handle this box before you start filling in income lines so you don’t forget it.
Record the Value of Every Reward When You Receive It
For each mining payout, log the date and time, the amount of cryptocurrency, and its dollar value at that moment. That dollar value is what you report as income, and it also becomes your cost basis in the coins for figuring capital gains later.3Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions on Virtual Currency Transactions
If your payout comes through an exchange, use the exchange’s recorded dollar value at the time of the transaction. For peer-to-peer transactions or pool payouts not routed through an exchange, the IRS accepts values from a cryptocurrency or blockchain explorer that calculates prices using worldwide index data at an exact date and time.3Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions on Virtual Currency Transactions Use any other method and you carry the burden of proving the value is accurate. Miners with hundreds or thousands of payouts a year usually run this through crypto tax software rather than tracking by hand.
Save the supporting paperwork too: electricity bills, invoices for ASIC miners or GPUs, internet costs, and pool fees. Those receipts are what you’ll need if the IRS questions any expense you claim.
Decide Whether You Mine as a Business or a Hobby
This classification drives every form choice that follows. The distinction comes from Internal Revenue Code Section 183, which separates activities pursued for profit from those that are not. The IRS looks at whether you conduct the activity in a business-like manner with a genuine intent to profit: keeping formal books, investing significant time, depending on the income, and adjusting your methods to improve results all point toward business treatment. A helpful presumption: if mining was profitable in at least three of the last five tax years, it’s presumed to be for-profit unless the IRS proves otherwise.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 183 – Activities Not Engaged in for Profit
Casual mining on a single GPU with no real plan to generate consistent profit will usually look like a hobby to the IRS. The practical consequence is significant. Hobby miners report the full fair market value of every coin they mine and cannot deduct any expenses against it. Business miners can deduct electricity, depreciation, pool fees, and other operating costs, which often cuts taxable mining income substantially.
If You Mine as a Business: Schedule C and Schedule SE
Report your gross mining income on Schedule C (Form 1040), Line 1.5Internal Revenue Service. Taxpayers Need to Report Crypto, Other Digital Asset Transactions on Their Tax Return Deductible expenses go into Part II of the same form. Common categories for miners include:
- Electricity used by mining equipment (separate it from household use with a dedicated meter or a reasonable allocation based on wattage and run time)
- The business-use portion of internet service
- Depreciation or immediate expensing of mining hardware, cooling systems, and related equipment
- Mining pool fees
- Rent for dedicated mining space, or the home office deduction if you use a room exclusively for mining
- Repairs and maintenance on rigs
Mining hardware is depreciable business property. Under Section 179, you can elect to expense qualifying equipment in the year you place it in service instead of spreading the deduction across several years, and 100% bonus depreciation was permanently restored by the One Big Beautiful Bill Act for qualified property acquired after January 19, 2025. Between the two, most individual miners can write off new rigs in the first year.
Net profit from Schedule C flows onto your Form 1040. If that net profit is above $400, you also owe self-employment tax, calculated on Schedule SE.6Internal Revenue Service. Self-Employment Tax (Social Security and Medicare Taxes) The combined rate is 15.3%: 12.4% for Social Security on the first $184,500 of combined wages and self-employment earnings in 2026,7Social Security Administration. Contribution and Benefit Base plus 2.9% for Medicare with no cap. You can deduct half of your self-employment tax when figuring adjusted gross income, using Schedule 1, Part II.8Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 554, Self-Employment Tax
If You Mine as a Hobby: Schedule 1, Line 8j
Hobby mining income goes on Schedule 1 (Form 1040), Line 8j, which is specifically designated for income from activities not engaged in for profit.9Taxpayer Advocate Service. Hobby vs. Business Income You do not file Schedule C, and you do not owe self-employment tax.
The trade-off is that you cannot deduct any mining expenses against this income. The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act suspended the itemized deduction for hobby expenses, and the One Big Beautiful Bill Act made that suspension permanent. If you spent $3,000 on electricity and hardware and mined $4,000 in crypto, you pay tax on the full $4,000, not on the $1,000 difference. That gap is why the business-versus-hobby call matters so much in practice.
Report Sales of Mined Coins on Form 8949 and Schedule D
Mining rewards are taxed as ordinary income when received, but the story doesn’t end there. When you later sell, swap, or spend those coins, you owe capital gains tax on any increase above your cost basis. Your basis is the fair market value you already reported as income on the day you mined them.10Internal Revenue Service. Frequently Asked Questions on Digital Asset Transactions
Holding period sets the rate. Coins held one year or less generate short-term capital gains taxed at your ordinary rate. Coins held more than a year qualify for long-term capital gains rates, which are lower for most taxpayers.2Internal Revenue Service. Digital Assets If the price dropped below your basis, you have a capital loss that can offset other gains or up to $3,000 of ordinary income per year.
Report each disposition on Form 8949 with the asset description, date acquired, date sold, proceeds, and cost basis. The totals carry over to Schedule D.11Internal Revenue Service. 2025 Instructions for Form 8949 Many small payouts followed by sales at different prices produce a lot of individual transactions, and crypto tax software that pulls from your wallets and exchanges is usually worth the cost here.
Pay Quarterly if You’ll Owe $1,000 or More
Mining income has no withholding, so if you expect to owe $1,000 or more when you file, the IRS expects quarterly estimated payments rather than a single settle-up in April.12Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty The four deadlines are:
- April 15, covering income from January through March
- June 15, covering income from April through May
- September 15, covering income from June through August
- January 15 of the following year, covering income from September through December
Use Form 1040-ES to calculate and submit each payment. You avoid the underpayment penalty by paying at least 90% of your current year’s tax or 100% of your prior year’s tax, whichever is less. If your prior-year adjusted gross income was above $150,000 ($75,000 if married filing separately), the prior-year safe harbor rises to 110%.12Internal Revenue Service. Underpayment of Estimated Tax by Individuals Penalty Because coin prices swing, a practical habit is to convert part of each payout to dollars shortly after receipt to cover the tax, rather than hoping the price holds until the due date.
File the Return and Pay the Balance
Electronic filing is the fastest way to get the return to the IRS, and commercial tax software handles crypto transactions with varying degrees of automation. If you owe a balance, IRS Direct Pay transfers funds from a checking or savings account at no cost, with a per-payment cap of $10 million.13Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay with Bank Account Business owners who need to schedule multiple payments can use the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). Interest and late-payment penalties start accruing right after the filing deadline, so pay as soon as you can.
