How to Report a Stolen Cash App Card and Dispute Charges

To report a stolen Cash App card, open the app, tap the Money tab, select your card, and lock it immediately, then choose Get card support and Report card issue to permanently deactivate the number. Speed is the whole game here: federal law caps what you can be forced to pay at $50 if you report within two business days of learning the card is gone, and Cash App’s own policy offers zero fraud liability on unauthorized charges when you report promptly.1eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers2Cash App Security. Lock the Card Before You Do Anything Else

Locking blocks every attempted transaction, in stores and online, and it takes seconds. It’s reversible, so you’re not committing to anything permanent, and there’s no reason to wait until you’ve decided what happened.3Cash App. Temporarily Lock My Card

  • Tap the Money tab on the home screen.
  • Select the card image at the top.
  • Tap Lock card.

Every transaction attempted after that is automatically declined. If you already know the card was stolen, don’t unlock it later — go straight to filing the report.3Cash App. Temporarily Lock My Card

File the Stolen Card Report

Locking freezes the card temporarily; reporting it stolen kills the sixteen-digit number for good and starts a replacement. It also creates the timestamp that anchors your federal liability protections.1eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers

What You Could Owe Depends on How Fast You Report

The Electronic Fund Transfer Act and Regulation E set the ceiling on your liability for unauthorized debit card transactions, and the ceiling rises the longer you wait.10Federal Trade Commission. Lost or Stolen Credit, ATM, and Debit Cards

  • Before any unauthorized charge posts: $0.
  • Within 2 business days of learning about the theft: up to $50.
  • More than 2 business days but within 60 calendar days after your statement is sent: up to $500.
  • More than 60 calendar days after the statement is sent: potentially unlimited, including money in linked accounts.

These are federal maximums.1eCFR. 12 CFR 1005.6 – Liability of Consumer for Unauthorized Transfers Cash App’s fraud policy says unauthorized card charges carry zero liability when reported promptly, which can be more protective than the statute — but the protection is conditional on reporting quickly.2Cash App Security. Should You File a Police Report

A police report isn’t required to get your money back, but it creates an official record, and some financial institutions ask for a copy when investigating fraud claims.12Office of the Comptroller of the Currency. Credit Card and Debit Card Fraud Contact your local police department to file, and keep the copy.

If the theft looks broader — the thief also accessed personal information like your Social Security number — file an identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov, which generates a recovery plan and pre-filled letters to send to financial institutions.13Federal Trade Commission. IdentityTheft.gov

Log in to each streaming service, subscription, or biller and update the payment information with the new card number. Direct deposits generally aren’t affected, because they run on your Cash App routing and account numbers rather than the card, but any payment you set up using the physical card number will need updating too.
