How to Renew Your US Visa: Interview, Documents, and Fees

To renew a US visa, you file a fresh DS-160 application, pay the visa fee, and go through the same consular process as a first-time applicant, with the only shortcut being an interview waiver if your visa category qualifies. As of October 1, 2025, that waiver is limited to B-1/B-2 visitor visas and H-2A agricultural worker visas that expired within the past 12 months, plus certain diplomatic categories. Age-based exemptions for children and older adults are gone.1U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025 Everyone else appears in person.

First, Check Whether You Actually Need to Renew

The date printed on your visa foil is not a deadline to leave the country. It is the last day you can present that visa at a U.S. port of entry and ask to be admitted. How long you can stay once inside is a separate decision, made by a Customs and Border Protection officer at each arrival and recorded on your I-94 admission record.2U.S. Department of State. What the Visa Expiration Date Means

You can look up your current I-94 and authorized stay on CBP’s I-94 website.3U.S. Customs and Border Protection. I-94 Official Website for Travelers Visiting the United States So long as that authorized stay is still in effect, you can remain in the United States legally even after the visa foil expires. What an expired visa blocks is re-entry: if you travel abroad, you cannot come back on it. That is when a renewal becomes necessary.

Can You Skip the Consular Interview?

This is the biggest question for most renewers, and the answer changed sharply in late 2025. Under current State Department policy, almost every nonimmigrant visa applicant must appear in person at a U.S. embassy or consulate, including children under 14 and adults over 79, who used to be exempt.1U.S. Department of State. Interview Waiver Update September 18, 2025

An interview waiver is still available in a narrow set of situations:

  • B-1, B-2, or B-1/B-2 visitor visas that expired within the past 12 months, were issued for full validity, and were issued when you were at least 18.
  • H-2A agricultural worker visas that meet the same 12-month window and full-validity requirements.
  • Diplomatic and official categories, including A-1, A-2, G-1 through G-4, and NATO.

The previous policy allowed waivers up to 48 months after expiration and across many more visa types. The 12-month cap is now written into statute.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas If you hold an H-1B, L-1, O-1, or another petition-based visa other than H-2A, expect an in-person interview no matter how clean your travel record.

Even if you meet the waiver criteria on paper, a consular officer can still require you to come in. You are also disqualified automatically if you have ever been refused a visa (unless that refusal was overcome or waived), or if there is any indication you violated U.S. immigration laws during a prior stay.1U.S. Department of State. Where You Have to Apply

You must apply at the consular post in the country where you normally live, or where regulations require it, the country of your nationality.4Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1202 – Application for Visas You cannot pick a consulate somewhere else and mail in your documents. If you live outside your country of citizenship, be ready to prove legal residence, such as a residency permit or work authorization, to establish that you belong in that consular district.

One boundary worth knowing: the State Department launched a limited domestic renewal pilot in January 2024 for certain H-1B holders, capped at roughly 20,000 applicants and restricted to visas originally issued by specific posts in Canada and India.5Federal Register. Documents You Need to Gather

DS-160 Application

The DS-160 is the online nonimmigrant visa application, submitted through the Department of State’s Consular Electronic Application Center.7U.S. Department of State. DS-160 Online Nonimmigrant Visa Application You will enter personal history, travel dates, employment details, and information from your previous visa. The system can time out, so pull your documents together before you start. Any mismatch between your DS-160 answers and your passport or prior records can flag your file for extra review.

Passport

Your passport must generally be valid for at least six months beyond your intended stay in the United States, though citizens of certain countries are exempt from that rule and only need validity through the intended stay.8U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Six-Month Passport Validity Update Keep the passport containing your previous visa with you if you still have it. If it was lost or stolen, you should expect a full in-person interview regardless of any other eligibility factor.

Photograph

Your photo must meet State Department standards: plain white or off-white background, no eyeglasses except for rare medical reasons, and specific sizing for both digital uploads and any printed copies.9U.S. Department of State. Photo Requirements Photo rejections are a common cause of early delays, and they are entirely avoidable.

Category-Specific Supporting Documents

Depending on your visa, you also need proof that the underlying basis for the visa still exists:

  • F and M students: a current Form I-20 signed by your designated school official, plus proof of your I-901 SEVIS fee payment. Corrections to the receipt should be emailed at least two weeks before your interview.10Study in the States. Paying the I-901 SEVIS Fee
  • H, L, O, P, Q, and R workers: an approved, unexpired Form I-797 Notice of Action showing the underlying petition is still valid.

Showing up without the current version of these documents is one of the fastest routes to a Section 221(g) refusal, which puts your file on hold until you produce what is missing.11U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information

What You Will Pay

The nonimmigrant visa application processing fee, sometimes called the MRV fee, is due before your application moves forward. It is non-refundable, whatever the outcome. Current rates:

  • Non-petition-based visas (B, F, J, and most others except E): $185.
  • Petition-based visas (H, L, O, P, Q, R): $205.

These rates apply uniformly at consular posts worldwide.12U.S. Department of State. Fees for Visa Services

A separate reciprocity or issuance fee may apply when the visa is actually approved and printed. The amount depends on your nationality and visa category and is set to mirror what your home country charges Americans for equivalent visas.13Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 8 USC 1351 – Nonimmigrant Visa Fees For some countries it is zero; for others it runs into the hundreds. How to Submit and What Happens Next

After you finish the DS-160 and pay the fee, the next step depends on the specific embassy or consulate. Most posts use an online scheduling system, often run by a third-party contractor, to handle appointments and document logistics.

If you qualify for a waiver, the system routes you into a drop-off or courier submission process. You print a courier authorization form, package it with your passport and supporting documents, and deliver or mail the package to a designated location. The courier moves everything to the consulate, where an officer reviews the file without seeing you in person.

If you need an interview, you use the online calendar to book a date. Bring every document listed above. Wait times vary heavily by post and season, and some high-demand consulates run several months out, which is why starting early matters. Consular sections do offer expedited appointments for genuine emergencies such as a death in the family, a serious medical situation, or an imminent school start, but only after you have submitted the DS-160, paid the fee, and scheduled the first available regular appointment, and you must document the emergency.15U.S. Department of State. Visa Appointment Wait Times

Once approved, your passport comes back through an authorized courier to your home or a pickup point. Check the visa foil as soon as you receive it: name spelling, date of birth, visa category, and expiration date. Printing errors do happen, and fixing them with the consulate is far easier than dealing with the problem at a U.S. port of entry.

If Your Case Goes Into Administrative Processing

Seeing “Administrative Processing” in your status means the officer needs additional information from outside sources before deciding your case. It is not an automatic denial, but no timeline is guaranteed.11U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information

The formal mechanism behind most of these holds is a refusal under Section 221(g) of the Immigration and Nationality Act, which means you did not establish eligibility to the officer’s satisfaction. The officer will tell you whether you need to submit additional documents or whether the case is in background screening you cannot influence. If documents are requested, you have one year from the refusal date to provide them. Miss that year, and you start over with a new application and a new fee.11U.S. Department of State. Administrative Processing Information Published embassy wait times do not include this processing.

Prior Overstays Can Block a Renewal

If you stayed past the date on your I-94 during a previous visit, that history follows you into any renewal application. Federal law bars future admission based on how long you were unlawfully present:

  • Between 180 days and one year of unlawful presence, followed by a voluntary departure before removal proceedings: a three-year bar on re-entry from the departure date.
  • One year or more of unlawful presence: a ten-year bar, whether you left voluntarily or were removed.

Minors under 18 do not accrue unlawful presence while underage, and specific exceptions exist for asylum seekers and trafficking victims.16U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Unlawful Presence and Inadmissibility If you filed a timely, non-frivolous application to extend your stay or change status before your I-94 expired, the unlawful presence clock pauses while that application is pending.2U.S. Department of State. What the Visa Expiration Date Means

Any overstay history disqualifies you from an interview waiver and will almost certainly mean explaining the circumstances face-to-face with a consular officer. An overstay of more than 180 days generally makes renewal impossible without first overcoming the applicable inadmissibility bar, and the waivers for those bars are hard to obtain.
