How to Renew UK Vehicle Tax Using Your V11 Reminder: Three Ways

To renew your UK vehicle tax using your V11 reminder, enter the 16-digit reference number printed on the letter into the “Tax your vehicle” service on GOV.UK, call DVLA on 0300 123 4321, or take the V11 to a Post Office that handles vehicle tax. All three routes accept the same reference number, and the online and phone services run 24 hours a day.1Inside DVLA. 5 Myth-Busting Facts About Taxing Your Vehicle

What the V11 Gives You

The V11 is a single-page reminder, not a form. DVLA posts it two to three weeks before your current tax period ends, and it goes to the registered keeper’s address on the V5C logbook. If you’ve moved and not updated the V5C, the letter will land at your old address.

Two things on the letter matter for renewal. The first is a 16-digit reference number: this is what you type into the online service or read out over the phone. The second is a barcode, which Post Office staff scan at the counter. The V11 also shows the tax rates available to your vehicle, usually a 12-month figure and a six-month figure, calculated from your vehicle’s CO₂ emissions, fuel type, and first registration date. If your car had a list price over £40,000 when new, the £440 expensive car supplement is already built into the total.2GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026

One boundary worth knowing: if you already pay by Direct Debit, you won’t get a V11. Your tax renews automatically, and DVLA sends a separate confirmation of when payments will come out.3GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit Payments – Renewing Your Vehicle Tax

Check Your MOT and Insurance Before You Start

The renewal system checks two records electronically, and the transaction will fail if either is wrong. Your vehicle needs a valid MOT covering the date the new tax period begins, and it needs to appear on the Motor Insurance Database as insured. You don’t have to present paper certificates for either — DVLA looks them up itself.4GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle – Section: At a Post Office

If your vehicle only just passed its MOT, give the database up to two days to update before you try to tax online. You can check the current insurance record through the askMID service if you’re not certain.5GOV.UK. Check if a Vehicle Is Taxed

Northern Ireland is the exception at the Post Office counter: you still need to bring a paper insurance certificate or cover note and the original MOT test certificate along with the V11.4GOV.UK. The Three Ways to Renew With Your V11

Online

Open the “Tax your vehicle” page on GOV.UK, enter the 16-digit reference number from the V11, choose your payment schedule, and pay. Once the payment clears, DVLA updates the vehicle’s digital record straight away and emails a confirmation you can keep as proof. The service is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.1Inside DVLA. 5 Myth-Busting Facts About Taxing Your Vehicle

By Phone

Ring DVLA’s automated vehicle tax line on 0300 123 4321. Have the V11 and your debit or credit card in front of you. The line is also 24 hours.6GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Note that Direct Debit isn’t available by phone; if you want to pay monthly, use the online service.

At a Post Office

Take the V11 to any Post Office branch that handles vehicle tax. Staff scan the barcode on the letter and take payment by card, cheque, or cash. If you’re in Northern Ireland, bring your paper insurance certificate and original MOT certificate as well.4GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle – Section: At a Post Office

Payment Schedules and What They Cost

The rate shown on your V11 is the annual figure. What you actually pay depends on how you spread it.

  • Paying 12 months upfront carries no surcharge. It’s the cheapest option.
  • Paying six months upfront adds a 10% surcharge to the half-year rate.
  • Monthly Direct Debit adds 5% to the annual total, split across 12 payments.7GOV.UK. Vehicle Tax Direct Debit Payments

As a worked example, a car on the £200 standard rate costs £210 in total across 12 monthly Direct Debit payments.2GOV.UK. V149 – Rates of Vehicle Tax April 2026 If you set up Direct Debit, your tax renews automatically from then on and no more V11s will arrive.

If Your V11 Never Arrived or You’ve Lost It

You can still tax the vehicle without the V11 by using a different reference number.8GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder

  • If you’re the registered keeper and have the V5C logbook, use the 11-digit reference number on it. This works online, by phone, and at a Post Office.
  • If you’ve just bought the vehicle and don’t have a V5C in your name yet, use the 12-digit number on the green V5C/2 new keeper slip the seller handed you.8GOV.UK. Tax Your Vehicle Without a Vehicle Tax Reminder

If both the V11 and the V5C are missing, apply for a replacement logbook using form V62, available on GOV.UK or at a Post Office. Processing takes several weeks.9GOV.UK. Apply for a Vehicle Registration Certificate (Form V62) Don’t wait for it to come back if your tax is about to run out: call DVLA on 0300 123 4321, because a registered keeper of an untaxed vehicle can be hit with an £80 penalty.10GOV.UK. If You’re Not Using the Vehicle, Declare SORN Instead

If the vehicle is off the road and staying off the road, you don’t have to renew the tax, but you do have to tell DVLA by making a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN). A vehicle without valid tax and no SORN in place triggers an automatic £80 penalty.12GOV.UK. When You Need to Make a SORN

You can declare SORN online through GOV.UK, by phoning 0300 123 4321, or by posting form V890 to DVLA.13GOV.UK. Make a Statutory Off Road Notification SORN (Form V890) Once made, the SORN stays in place until you tax the vehicle again, sell it, scrap it, or export it.
