How to Renew a Trinidad and Tobago Passport at the Consulate

To renew a Trinidad and Tobago passport at the consulate, take your current passport, two compliant photos, the completed green-bordered renewal form, and the required fee to the nearest High Commission, Embassy, or Consulate General serving your area. The mission collects the paperwork and forwards it to the Immigration Division in Port of Spain, which prints the new passport and returns it through the same mission. Plan on six to eight weeks from submission to collection.1Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Identification of Trinidad and Tobago Passports

Which Mission Handles Your Application

Every application submitted from outside Trinidad and Tobago goes through a diplomatic mission. Which one depends on where you live: the High Commission, Embassy, or Consulate General with jurisdiction over your area is the office that will accept your paperwork and send it on to Port of Spain, where all passports are actually printed.2Government of the Republic of Trinidad & Tobago. Procedures vary from one mission to the next. Fees differ, payment methods differ, and some missions accept mail-in renewals while others require you to appear. Call or check the website of your specific mission before you assemble the package.

When to Renew

Adult passports (age 16 and over) are valid for ten years. Children’s passports are valid for five. You can apply at any time, including after the old passport has already expired.3Ministry of Homeland Security. Passport FAQs

Don’t cut it close. Many countries refuse entry when a passport expires within six months of the travel date, and consular processing runs six to eight weeks in normal conditions, longer during peak periods. If you have travel booked, start now.

What to Submit for an Adult Renewal

Adults use the Machine Readable Passport Renewal Form, which has a green border.4Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Application Form for the Renewal of Trinidad and Tobago Machine Readable Passport (Applicants 16 Years and Over) Along with the completed form, you’ll need:

  • Your original expired or expiring Trinidad and Tobago passport. The consulate keeps it for cancellation, though it may be returned temporarily in some situations.
  • Two recent color photographs meeting the specifications below.
  • Two clear color photocopies of the bio-data page of your most recent passport.
  • An original marriage certificate, divorce decree absolute, deed poll, or name-change certificate if your personal details have changed since the last passport was issued.

Supporting documents in a language other than English need an official translation from a registered translator, and non-Trinidad and Tobago documents may need to be apostilled depending on where they were issued.

One boundary worth flagging: if your current passport number does not begin with a two-letter prefix such as TA, TB, BA, or TC, it’s an older-style passport, and you cannot use the renewal route at all. You’ll need to file a first-issue Machine Readable Passport application, which is an in-person process with a heavier document list including a computerized birth certificate and, for dual nationals, evidence of every other citizenship you hold.5Consulate General for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Photo Specifications

Photos are the single most common reason renewals get bounced back. Each print must be 31mm wide by 41mm high, with chin-to-crown of your head filling 70 to 80 percent of the vertical space.6Ministry of National Security, Immigration Division. Illustrative Guidelines for Portraits in a Machine Readable Passport Other rules:

  • Plain, light-colored background.
  • Neutral expression, mouth closed, facing the camera squarely.
  • Prescription glasses are allowed only if your eyes are clearly visible with no lens glare. Tinted lenses, heavy frames covering the eyes, and sunglasses are rejected.
  • No head coverings, unless worn for religious or medical reasons, and even then the full face from chin to forehead and both edges must show.

Filling the Form Correctly

Use dark blue or black ink and print in block letters. Sign both Section 4 and Section 9, and keep the signature inside the box on each. A signature that crosses or touches the border voids the form, and you’ll have to start again with a clean copy.7Government of Trinidad and Tobago. MRP Renewal Application Form

Fees and How to Pay

Fees vary by mission and are updated periodically. As of January 2026, the Consulate General in New York charges $126 for a standard adult renewal (ages 2–59, 32-page book).8Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Payment is usually restricted to a money order made out to the Embassy or Consulate. The Embassy in Washington, D.C., for instance, accepts money orders only, and does not take cash, personal checks, or credit cards.10Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs. FAQs – Embassy Washington DC Money orders and certified bank checks are the safest instruments across missions.

Submitting by Mail or in Person

Certain missions accept routine adult renewals by mail or through a secure drop-off box. A mailed package should contain the completed form, photos, photocopies of supporting documents, and the original expired passport. Confirm the specific submission options with your consulate before you post anything; policies vary between missions.

If you submit in person, bring originals of every supporting document for verification. The officer reviews and returns originals, keeping only the previous passport for cancellation.

Some situations cannot be handled by mail at all and require an appointment: applications for children under 16, first-time Machine Readable Passport applications, and replacements for lost, stolen, or mutilated passports.11Consulate General for the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Processing Time and Collection

Budget six to eight weeks from submission.1Embassy of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. Identification of Trinidad and Tobago Passports That’s longer than applying in Trinidad because the paperwork has to travel securely between the mission and Port of Spain. Delays past eight weeks happen during peak travel periods or when Immigration Division backlogs build up.

Once the new passport arrives at the mission, you can collect it in person. If you want it mailed to you, most missions require a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope or courier label supplied at the time of application. Return shipping is on you.

Other Situations Renewal Doesn’t Cover

A few common cases sit outside the standard adult renewal path:

Children under 16. A minor’s passport cannot be renewed by mail. The child and at least one parent or legal guardian named on the birth certificate must attend the consulate in person for a live photo and an interview. Required items include the child’s original birth certificate, the attending parent’s national ID or passport, the child’s expired passport, and, where only one parent attends, a notarized Statutory Declaration of consent from the absent parent with a notarized copy of that parent’s ID.3Ministry of Homeland Security. Passport FAQs Sole custody by court order or a death certificate can stand in for the absent-parent consent.

Lost, stolen, or mutilated passports. These require an appointment, not a mail-in. A stolen passport needs an actual police report referencing the Trinidad and Tobago passport; a case number alone is not enough. A lost passport needs a statutory declaration explaining the circumstances plus a local police notification. Destruction by fire needs a fire department report.12Government of Trinidad and Tobago. Form 5 – Lost, Stolen, Mutilated Passport Application Guidelines and Notification Form Fees are substantially higher than a routine renewal, generally in the US$121 to US$345 range, confirmed to you before processing.

Urgent return travel. If you need to get back to Trinidad and Tobago before a full renewal can be processed, an Emergency Certificate is a one-way document issued only for that purpose. It is not a passport and cannot be used to travel anywhere else. Processing takes roughly five business days from when the application reaches the consulate, and the fee is $25 if the passport is simply expired or $45 if it was lost, stolen, or mutilated.13Consulate General of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.
