What You’ll Need Before You Start

Gather these items before opening the form:

  • The 11-digit serial number from the top of the money order or from your purchase receipt.
  • A valid government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license or passport. The name on your refund request has to match the ID exactly, because you’ll show that same ID when you collect the refund.
  • Purchase details: the date you bought it, the dollar amount, the store name, and the city, state, and country of purchase.
  • Proof of purchase, meaning a scan or photo of the receipt portion with the barcode, or of the money order itself.

Western Union uses these details to confirm the money order hasn’t been cashed. Only uncashed money orders qualify for a refund.1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

  • Check status first. Enter the 11-digit serial number and the dollar amount, then click Check Status to confirm the money order is eligible.
  • Complete the form. Fill in the purchase details, your reason for the refund, the payee name, and upload your proof of purchase. Add your contact information and mailing address.
  • Review the terms, submit, and watch for the confirmation email. Status updates come to the email address you gave on the form.

The Processing Fee

Western Union deducts a non-refundable processing fee from the refund. The fee depends on the face value:1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

  • $5 or less: no fee.
  • Above $5 but under $100: $5.
  • $100 or more: $15.

Additional charges can apply depending on the money order’s status. If the money order has been dormant for an extended period, non-use service charges may already have been taken out of the principal, which reduces what’s left to refund.1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

When You Don’t Have the Receipt

You can still submit a request without the barcode receipt or the physical money order. Western Union accepts alternative proof, such as the original store receipt together with a copy of a police report that references the money order number.1Western Union. Money Order Request Form

If the Money Order Was Lost or Stolen

The online refund only works for money orders that have not been cashed. If someone unauthorized has already cashed it, a standard refund is generally not available, and Western Union says that once a transfer is sent or deposited, a refund may not be possible.1Western Union. If the stolen money order has not yet been cashed, submit the standard online refund request and attach the police report alongside any other proof of purchase.

A Note on Dormancy

Western Union money orders do not expire. Depending on the state of purchase, though, a non-refundable service charge may be deducted from the principal if the money order sits unused for one to three years after the purchase date.3Western Union. Money Orders: Purchase and Cash at a Western Union Near You The money order stays valid, but the amount available to refund or cash may be less than you paid.

If the money order remains uncashed long enough, the remaining balance may be turned over to the state as unclaimed property under escheatment laws. Dormancy periods vary by state, typically two to seven years, with three or five years most common. Once funds have been escheated, the refund is no longer a Western Union matter: you file a claim with your state’s unclaimed property office instead.
