How to Print Out Your Temporary Driver’s License

To print out your temporary driver’s license, open the PDF that your state motor vehicle agency generated when you finished your online transaction, then send it to a printer at standard letter size with the scale set to 100%. The PDF usually appears on the final confirmation screen and is often emailed to you as well. The printed sheet is your legal proof of driving privileges until the permanent card arrives, generally within two to four weeks.

Find the PDF First

Where the document lives depends on how you completed the transaction. If you renewed, replaced, or applied online, the temporary license is almost always available immediately on the confirmation page. Look for a link labeled something like “Print Receipt,” “Download Temporary License,” or “View Interim Document.” That link opens a PDF.

Clicked away too soon? Log back into your account on the agency’s website. The document is typically stored under a tab such as “My Transactions,” “Recent Activity,” or “My Information.” You may need your confirmation number, application number, or the personal details you used during the transaction to pull it up.

Check your email too. Many agencies automatically send the temporary license to the address on file. Search your inbox for a message from the agency, and check spam or junk if nothing turns up. The attachment or embedded link is the same PDF you would have seen on the confirmation screen.

Print It at the Right Size

Once the PDF is open, the print command is the standard one for your device:

  • In a web browser, press Ctrl+P on Windows or Command+P on a Mac. You can also use File then Print from the menu bar.
  • In Adobe Acrobat or another PDF viewer, use the same keyboard shortcut or click the printer icon in the toolbar.
  • On a phone or tablet, tap the share or menu icon and choose Print. You’ll need a wireless-capable printer or a connection through a printing app.

Before you send the job, check a few settings. Set the paper size to standard letter, 8.5 by 11 inches. Keep the orientation on portrait unless the document itself is landscape. Choose “Actual Size” or 100% scaling rather than “Fit to Page” or a custom percentage. Barcodes that get stretched or shrunk may not scan properly if an officer needs to verify your information.

Save a copy of the PDF to your device as a backup. If the printout gets damaged or lost, you can reprint without logging back into the portal.

No Printer at Home

Public libraries almost universally offer printing, often for a few cents per page. Office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot have self-service print stations where you can pull up the PDF from email or a USB drive. FedEx Office and The UPS Store offer the same service, and some pharmacy photo counters print standard documents too.

If none of those work, visit your local motor vehicle office in person. Most will print a temporary license on the spot after verifying your identity, though you may wait in line. Some states hand you the temporary document at the counter automatically when you finish an in-person transaction, so the printing question only comes up for online renewals in those states.

When Something Goes Wrong

A few problems come up repeatedly, and each has a straightforward fix.

  • If the document won’t open, your browser’s pop-up blocker is the most likely culprit. Temporarily disable it for the agency’s site and try again. If that fails, right-click the link and choose “Save As” to download the PDF directly.
  • If the page shows garbled text or a blank PDF, clear your browser’s cache and cookies, or switch browsers entirely. Chrome, Firefox, Edge, and Safari handle PDFs slightly differently, and switching often solves rendering problems.
  • If the printer won’t respond, confirm it’s powered on, connected to your computer or Wi-Fi, and loaded with paper and ink. Print a test page from your computer’s printer settings to isolate whether the fault is the printer or the document.
  • If the printout is too faint or cut off, switch to a higher print quality setting and make sure the scale is set to “Actual Size.” If text is still cut off at the edges, adjust the margins to “None” or “Minimum.”

If the portal still won’t generate the document after all of that, call the agency’s customer service line with your transaction or confirmation number ready. They can usually resend the file or walk you through an alternate download path.

Where the Printout Is Accepted

A printed temporary license is legally valid proof that you’re licensed to drive. Keep it in your vehicle or on your person whenever you’re behind the wheel. It functions the same as your permanent card for traffic stops and roadside checks. The validity period varies by state but generally runs 30 to 90 days, and the expiration date is printed on the document itself.

Some limits are worth knowing before you assume the printout covers everything a hard card would.

Airport Security

TSA does not accept temporary paper driver’s licenses at airport security checkpoints, printed or displayed on a phone. That’s been the case for years and matters more now that REAL ID enforcement began on May 7, 2025. A temporary license is not REAL ID-compliant regardless of whether the permanent card will be.1Transportation Security Administration. Acceptable Identification at the TSA Checkpoint If you need to fly before the permanent card arrives, use a passport, passport card, military ID, or another form of identification on TSA’s accepted list. TSA’s ConfirmID program also lets you pay a $45 fee online for a 10-day travel window when you don’t have an accepted ID.2Transportation Security Administration. New-Job Paperwork

For Form I-9, a state-issued driver’s license with a photograph qualifies as a List B identity document. Many temporary paper licenses don’t include a photograph, so they may not satisfy List B on their own. If yours does have a photo, it can work. If not, you’ll need another identity document such as a passport or voter registration card. A receipt showing you’ve applied to replace a lost or stolen license is separately accepted as a List B receipt, valid for 90 days while you wait for the permanent card.3U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Retailers and Everyday ID Checks

A temporary license shows your date of birth, so in principle it works for buying alcohol or tobacco. In practice, retailers have wide discretion, and store policies often tell cashiers to accept only hard plastic cards with security features like holograms. That isn’t a legal prohibition, it’s a fraud-control policy, and there’s no way to force the sale if a store refuses. Banks, government offices, and notaries vary the same way. Carrying a passport or other photo ID as a backup avoids the hassle.

Phone Copies Are Not Mobile Driver’s Licenses

Saving the PDF to your phone is smart as a backup. Just don’t treat it as a substitute for the printout. Some states allow digital display of a license at traffic stops; others expect a physical document. And a screenshot or PDF is not the same as an official mobile driver’s license stored in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet. Those mobile credentials, which TSA accepts at participating checkpoints, are digitized versions of a permanent REAL ID-compliant license. A temporary paper license cannot be added to a digital wallet as an mDL, even in states that support the technology.4Transportation Security Administration. If the Permanent Card Doesn’t Arrive in Time

If your temporary license is approaching its expiration date and the permanent card still hasn’t shown up, contact the issuing agency. Most can check the mailing status and tell you whether the card has shipped. Common causes of delay include an address mismatch in their records, a hold placed because of missing documentation, or postal delays. Many states let you check mailing status online without a phone call.

If the card was mailed but never arrived, you’ll likely need to request a replacement, which may involve a small fee. In the meantime, some states will extend the temporary license or issue a new one to cover the gap. Don’t let the temporary expire without taking action. Driving without valid proof of licensure can bring a citation even when your license itself is active in the system.
