How to Place a Credit Freeze for Minors at All 3 Bureaus

To freeze a minor’s credit, you mail a request with documentation to each of the three nationwide credit bureaus separately. The freeze is free under federal law, and once a bureau receives your complete request, it has three business days to place the freeze. If your child has no credit file yet, which is the case for most kids, the bureau must create one and freeze it immediately.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts There is no online shortcut for minors. Everything goes by mail, at every bureau, every time.

Documents to Gather Before You Start

Each bureau wants the same three things: proof of your child’s identity, proof of your identity, and proof that you have authority to act for the child. Assemble one full packet, then make copies for each bureau you plan to contact. Send copies only, never originals.

For your child, include copies of the birth certificate and Social Security card. For yourself, include a copy of your driver’s license or another government-issued photo ID, plus something showing your current address, like a utility bill or bank statement.2Experian. Proof of your relationship depends on your situation. A biological parent named on the birth certificate is covered by the birth certificate itself. If your name isn’t on it, or if you’re an adoptive parent, legal guardian, or foster parent, you’ll need a court order or other legal document showing your authority.3TransUnion. Check Whether a File Already Exists

Before you submit the freeze, it’s worth checking whether your child already has a credit file. A file for a young child is a strong sign that someone has used their Social Security number.

TransUnion offers a secure online form where you enter the child’s name, Social Security number, and date of birth; if the search finds a file, TransUnion contacts you about next steps.4TransUnion. No file is good news. The bureau will create one and freeze it when your request arrives.

Where to Send Each Request

A request to one bureau does not notify the others. Skip a bureau and you leave a gap a thief can walk through. Each has its own form or letter, but the documentation you attach is the same.

Send each packet by certified mail with return receipt. That gives you proof of delivery and a dated paper trail if a bureau later says it never received your request.

Two Specialty Bureaus Worth Including

Beyond the three majors, two specialty consumer reporting agencies matter for children. Identity thieves use kids’ Social Security numbers to open bank accounts and utility services, and those records live outside the big three.

What Happens After You Mail It

Each bureau processes the request and mails you a confirmation. Experian estimates 10 to 15 days for a response.2Experian. Adults who freeze their own credit get a PIN and can lift the freeze online in minutes. Protected consumer freezes on minors don’t work that way. TransUnion confirms that a protected consumer freeze can only be placed or removed by mail, because identity and authority have to be proven each time.10TransUnion. Lifting the Freeze, and What Happens as Your Child Grows Up

The freeze stays in place until someone acts. As parent or guardian, you can lift or remove it at any time by mailing a written request with the same identity and authority documentation to each bureau. There is no fee.10TransUnion. Freeze Support Center – Credit Freeze FAQs

Two ages change the picture. Federal law defines a “protected consumer” as someone under 16.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

  • At 16, your child ages out of protected consumer status. At TransUnion, for instance, your child can request removal of the freeze themselves starting at 16.3TransUnion. Child Identity Theft
  • At 18, your child can convert the protected consumer freeze into a standard adult freeze, which they can then manage online and temporarily lift as needed. The conversion requires mailing in documentation one more time.3TransUnion. Child Identity Theft

If nobody does anything, the freeze just stays in place. That sounds safe, and it is, until your 18-year-old tries to apply for a student loan, rent an apartment, or open a cell phone account and gets blocked. Talk to your child before their 18th birthday so they’re ready to convert or lift the freeze when they need to.

If You Already See Signs of Theft

Freeze the credit either way. It stops new accounts from being opened while you deal with any existing ones. Warning signs the FTC flags include collection calls or bills for accounts you never opened, denial of government benefits because someone else is already using your child’s Social Security number, an IRS letter saying your child owes income taxes, or a credit denial when your teen first applies for a loan.11Consumer Advice. How To Protect Your Child From Identity Theft

If any of those has happened, file an identity theft report at IdentityTheft.gov in addition to placing the freeze. That report unlocks additional rights under the Fair Credit Reporting Act, including an extended fraud alert that lasts seven years and the ability to have fraudulent information blocked from your child’s file. A fraud alert placed at one bureau automatically triggers alerts at the other two, which is not true of a freeze.12Consumer Advice. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts
