How to Pay Quarterly Federal Taxes Online: Options and Deadlines

You can pay quarterly federal estimated taxes online for free by sending the money straight from your bank account through IRS Direct Pay or your IRS Online Account. Both options handle Form 1040-ES payments, take a few minutes, and give you a confirmation number as proof. Card payments are also available through two authorized processors, but they carry a fee.

Your Online Payment Options

The IRS accepts estimated tax payments through several electronic channels. The right one depends on whether you want the fastest path, a running record of your payments, or the ability to use a card.

IRS Direct Pay

Direct Pay is a free service that pulls funds from your checking or savings account. There’s no registration: you enter your identifying information and bank details each time. The single-payment cap is just under $10 million, so it’s effectively unlimited for individuals. Payments are treated as received on the date you select, though the withdrawal itself can take up to two business days to clear your bank.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help

IRS Online Account

Your IRS Online Account also lets you pay from a bank account, and it adds a dashboard showing your balance, payment history, and any scheduled payments across tax years.2Internal Revenue Service. Payments You have to create an account and sign in, but the tradeoff is a single place to track every payment you’ve made.

EFTPS

The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System is a free Treasury system that allows scheduling up to 365 days in advance and keeps 15 months of payment history. The IRS no longer accepts new EFTPS enrollments for individual taxpayers, so this option is only available if you already have an EFTPS account. New individual filers should use Direct Pay or the Online Account instead.3Internal Revenue Service. EFTPS: The Electronic Federal Tax Payment System

Credit or Debit Card

Card payments go through two authorized processors, Pay1040 and ACI Payments, Inc. Personal credit card fees run 1.75% to 1.85% of the payment (minimum $2.50). Personal debit card transactions are a flat $2.10 to $2.15. The IRS keeps none of the fee; the processor does.4Internal Revenue Service. Pay Your Taxes by Debit or Credit Card or Digital Wallet

Paying Through IRS Direct Pay, Step by Step

Direct Pay is the most direct route for most individuals. From the Direct Pay page, work through the screens in this order:

  • Select “Make a Payment” to start a new transaction.
  • Choose “Estimated Tax” as the reason, then choose “1040-ES” as the form it applies to.5Internal Revenue Service. Types of Payments Available to Individuals Through Direct Pay
  • Pick the calendar year you’re paying for (for example, 2026).
  • Verify your identity by entering your Social Security Number or ITIN, date of birth, and filing status. The system matches these against IRS records.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6109 – Identifying Numbers
  • Enter your bank’s routing number and your account number.
  • Enter the dollar amount and the date you want the funds withdrawn.
  • Review the confirmation screen, then submit.

Save or print the confirmation number that appears immediately after you submit. It is the only proof that you initiated the payment, and you’ll need it to change or cancel the transaction later. Direct Pay cannot retrieve a lost confirmation number once you leave the site.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help

When Quarterly Payments Are Due

The tax year splits into four unequal payment periods. For 2026, the deadlines are:7Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax

  • April 15, 2026, for income earned January 1 through March 31
  • June 15, 2026, for income earned April 1 through May 31
  • September 15, 2026, for income earned June 1 through August 31
  • January 15, 2027, for income earned September 1 through December 31

If a due date lands on a Saturday, Sunday, or legal holiday in the District of Columbia, the deadline moves to the next business day.8Internal Revenue Service. Publication 509 (2026), Tax Calendars Because a Direct Pay withdrawal can take up to two business days to clear, schedule the payment a few days ahead of the deadline rather than on the day itself.

Changing or Canceling a Scheduled Payment

To modify or cancel a Direct Pay transaction, return to the Direct Pay page, select “Look Up a Payment,” and enter your confirmation number. You can make changes up to two business days before the scheduled payment date. After that cutoff, the payment processes as originally scheduled.1Internal Revenue Service. Direct Pay Help

If the IRS applies a payment to the wrong tax year or form, call the IRS using the number on any notice you receive, and have your return and payment records available so the representative can locate and correct the entry.9Internal Revenue Service. Understanding Your CP23 Notice

Confirm the Money Actually Moved

A confirmation number proves you submitted the request. It does not prove that your bank processed the withdrawal. Check your bank statement or your IRS Online Account at least 48 hours after the payment date to confirm the funds left your account.1Internal Revenue Service. Reporting the Payments on Your Return

When you file your annual return, report the total of your quarterly estimated payments on Form 1040, line 26. Include any overpayment from the prior year that you elected to apply to the current year.7Internal Revenue Service. Estimated Tax Those amounts reduce your total tax liability. If your payments exceed what you owe, you can take the excess as a refund or roll it forward to next year’s estimated tax.

What Happens If You Miss a Deadline

The underpayment penalty is not a flat fine. It’s calculated as interest on the shortfall, running from the date the payment was due until the date it’s paid. The IRS resets the rate quarterly based on the federal short-term rate plus three percentage points.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6621 – Determination of Rate of Interest For the first quarter of 2026, that rate is 7%.11Internal Revenue Service. Quarterly Interest Rates The penalty is calculated separately for each quarter, so paying on time for three periods and missing one means interest accrues only on that one shortfall.

You owe no penalty at all if your total tax minus withholding and credits comes out to less than $1,000.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6654 – Failure by Individual to Pay Estimated Income Tax The IRS normally calculates the penalty for you. If you want to request a waiver, whether because you retired at 62 or later, became disabled during the year, or were affected by a federally declared disaster, file Form 2210 with your return.13Internal Revenue Service.
