To pay your Form 2290 online, file the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax return through an IRS-authorized e-file provider, submit payment to the U.S. Treasury by EFTPS, direct debit, or card, and download the watermarked Schedule 1 the IRS sends back after acceptance. Most returns are processed within minutes, and that stamped Schedule 1 is what your state will require before registering the vehicle.1Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 The tax applies to highway vehicles with a taxable gross weight of 55,000 pounds or more, up to an annual maximum of $550 per vehicle.2Federal Highway Administration. What to Have Ready Before You File
Four pieces of information drive the entire filing:
- An Employer Identification Number. A Social Security Number will not work. If you do not have an EIN yet, apply on the IRS website; online applicants receive one immediately, and mail applications take longer.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
- The full 17-character VIN for each vehicle you are reporting. An incorrect VIN can block state registration.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
- The taxable gross weight, which combines the unloaded weight of the vehicle, the weight of trailers normally used with it, and the heaviest load usually carried.4eCFR. 26 CFR 41.4481-1 – Imposition and Computation of Tax
- The month the vehicle was first used on public highways during the current tax period, which runs July 1 through June 30. This date sets your deadline and determines whether the tax is prorated.5Internal Revenue Service. Key Filing Deadlines for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax
Pick an IRS-Authorized E-File Provider
The IRS does not accept Form 2290 directly on IRS.gov. You have to go through one of the commercial software providers listed on the IRS site.1Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 Fees vary by provider and typically scale with the number of vehicles on the return. If you are reporting 25 or more vehicles on a single return, electronic filing is required.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290
When comparing providers, look at how quickly they return the stamped Schedule 1 after IRS acceptance, whether they offer bulk pricing for fleets, and how they handle VIN corrections. All IRS-authorized providers must meet security standards that include extended validation SSL encryption, weekly vulnerability scans by a certified third party, and written privacy safeguards, and they must report any security incident to the IRS by the next business day.7Internal Revenue Service. Pay the Tax
The fee you pay the software company is separate from the tax payment that goes to the U.S. Treasury. You have three ways to send the tax itself:
- Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). It is free, run by the Treasury Department, and requires enrollment in advance. New enrollees wait five to seven business days for a PIN to arrive by mail, so this is not a last-minute option.8Electronic Federal Tax Payment System (EFTPS). Welcome to EFTPS Online
- Direct debit, also called electronic funds withdrawal. The IRS pulls the payment from your business bank account at the time of filing. You need your routing and account numbers.
- Credit or debit card, processed by a third-party payment processor that adds a convenience fee to the tax amount.
Whichever route you use, initiate the payment by your deadline. EFTPS in particular has same-day processing cutoffs earlier in the day, so leaving it until the evening of the due date is risky.
Get Your Stamped Schedule 1
Once you submit the return electronically, the IRS processes most filings and returns the watermarked Schedule 1 within minutes.1Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 Your provider delivers it by email as a PDF you can download and print. That Schedule 1 is your proof of payment, and states require it before they will register your vehicle or issue plates.3Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 (Rev. July 2025)
Before you take it to the DMV, check that the IRS watermark is legible on the printed copy.1Internal Revenue Service. E-file Form 2290 Keep copies in the vehicle and in your business records. Signing the form also authorizes the IRS to share your VIN and payment verification with the Department of Transportation, Customs and Border Protection, and state motor vehicle agencies.9Internal Revenue Service. Filing Deadlines
The current tax period runs from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026. If your vehicle was on the road during July, the return and payment are due by September 2, 2025 (the usual August 31 deadline moved for the weekend).5Internal Revenue Service. Key Filing Deadlines for the Heavy Highway Vehicle Use Tax
For a vehicle first used on a public highway in any month other than July, file by the last day of the following month. A truck first driven in November requires filing by December 31.10Internal Revenue Service. When Form 2290 Taxes Are Due The same deadlines apply whether tax is owed or the vehicle qualifies for a suspension. If a due date lands on a weekend or federal holiday, it shifts to the next business day.
Fixing a Wrong VIN After You File
If you submitted the return with an incorrect VIN, file a new Form 2290 with the VIN Correction box checked. List the corrected VIN on Schedule 1, attach a written explanation, and use the form version for the tax period you are fixing.6Internal Revenue Service. Instructions for Form 2290 VIN corrections go through your e-file provider the same way the original return did, and the IRS issues a new watermarked Schedule 1 with the corrected number.
What Happens If the Payment Is Late
Missing the deadline triggers two penalties at once. The failure-to-file penalty is 5 percent of the unpaid tax per month or partial month, up to 25 percent.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S. Code 6651 – Failure to File Tax Return or to Pay Tax The failure-to-pay penalty adds another 0.5 percent per month, also capped at 25 percent. When both apply in the same month, the failure-to-file amount is reduced by the failure-to-pay amount, so the combined rate is effectively 5 percent per month.
Interest runs on top of the penalties. The IRS underpayment rate for the first quarter of 2026 is 7 percent annually, compounded daily.12Internal Revenue Service. Interest Rates Remain the Same for the First Quarter of 2026 On a $550 bill, a five-month delay can push the total past $700 once penalties and interest are added.13Federal Highway Administration.
