How to Open a Business Bank Account With an EIN

You can open a business bank account with an EIN in a single sitting, online or at a branch, as long as you arrive with three things: your IRS EIN confirmation letter, the formation documents for your business, and government-issued photo ID for every major owner. One catch worth knowing before you go: a newly issued EIN can take up to two weeks to appear in the verification system banks use, so timing matters if yours is fresh.1Internal Revenue Service. What to Bring

Every bank asks for two things regardless of how your business is organized: your EIN confirmation letter from the IRS (the CP 575 you printed when your number was issued, or a Letter 147C replacement if you lost the original) and government-issued photo ID for each person authorized to manage the account.2U.S. Small Business Administration. Open a Business Bank Account If you no longer have your CP 575, request a 147C by calling the IRS Business and Specialty Tax Line at 800-829-4933. Both letters are accepted.1Internal Revenue Service. Beyond those basics, the paperwork depends on how your business is set up:

  • Sole proprietorship: no formation document is required, but if you operate under a trade name rather than your own legal name, bring a “doing business as” (DBA) certificate filed with your local or state government.
  • LLC: the Articles of Organization filed with the state, plus your Operating Agreement showing who owns and manages the company.
  • Corporation: the Articles of Incorporation and the corporate bylaws.
  • Partnership: a signed partnership agreement and, depending on your state, a certificate of partnership or business name registration.

Make sure the business name on your application matches your state filing exactly. An ampersand where “and” should be, or a missing comma in an LLC suffix, is enough to stall the application while the bank cross-references state databases. Mismatches are one of the most common reasons applications get held up.

The business address you list must be a physical location. A P.O. box does not satisfy federal customer identification rules.3eCFR. 31 CFR 1020.220 – Customer Identification Program Some banks also ask for a business license or industry permit, and many request your NAICS code, the six-digit number that classifies your business activity.

The EIN Verification Delay

Here is the timing problem that catches new business owners off guard. Your EIN is valid the moment the IRS issues it, but the number takes up to two weeks to appear in the IRS TIN Matching system that banks rely on for electronic verification.1Internal Revenue Service. Employer Identification Number If you walk in the day after receiving your EIN, the bank’s system may not be able to confirm the number exists, and your application can be delayed or declined on the spot.

The workaround is straightforward. Bring the physical CP 575 confirmation letter. Most banks will accept it as proof while their electronic system catches up. Call ahead if you are in a hurry, because policies on this vary from bank to bank, and confirming beforehand can save you a wasted trip.

Who the Bank Will Ask About

Federal rules require banks to identify the real people behind every business account. Under the Customer Due Diligence rule administered by FinCEN, anyone who owns 25% or more of the company has to provide their full legal name, date of birth, residential address, and taxpayer identification number.4Federal Register. Customer Due Diligence Requirements for Financial Institutions The bank also identifies at least one person with significant management control, such as a CEO or managing member, even if that person owns less than 25%.5Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. Each of those beneficial owners needs to present a valid government-issued ID, such as a passport or driver’s license. The bank checks the information against federal databases and watchlists, which is why business account opening runs slower than opening a personal account.

A quick note on a separate rule that has caused confusion: FinCEN’s Beneficial Ownership Information (BOI) reporting requirement under the Corporate Transparency Act. As of March 2025, domestic U.S. companies are exempt from filing BOI reports directly with FinCEN.6Financial Crimes Enforcement Network. FinCEN Removes Beneficial Ownership Reporting Requirements for U.S. Companies and U.S. Persons That exemption does not change what the bank collects. Banks still gather ownership information for their own compliance, so expect the questions regardless.

Applying and What Happens Next

Most banks let you apply online in a few minutes. You upload PDF copies of your formation documents and identification through a secure portal, then sign the deposit agreement electronically. If you apply in person, bring the originals. Bankers usually need to see them even when they end up scanning copies for the file.

Approval is sometimes immediate, more often one to three business days while the compliance team verifies your EIN and ownership details against federal databases. Once approved, digital access to the banking portal typically activates right away, and you can set up transfer permissions and mobile deposits. A business debit card usually arrives by mail within 7 to 10 business days, and you can order checks at that point.

If the Bank Turns You Down

Denials tend to trace back to one of a few causes: the EIN cannot be verified electronically (the delay described above), the business name does not match state records, or an owner’s personal banking history raised a flag.

Banks screen applicants through reporting agencies like ChexSystems and Early Warning Services. Those databases track things like previously closed accounts with unpaid negative balances. Under the Equal Credit Opportunity Act, if a bank denies your application it must send an adverse action notice explaining the reason, either automatically or within 30 days of your written request.7Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. 12 CFR 1002.9 – Notifications That notice is where you start.

If ChexSystems was the reason, you can dispute inaccurate information directly with ChexSystems online, by phone at 800-428-9623, or by mail. Reinvestigations are typically completed within 30 days.8ChexSystems. Dispute You will need your full name, address, date of birth, Social Security number, a description of what you are disputing, and copies of your driver’s license and proof of address.

If the denial holds and you cannot clear the underlying issue quickly, some banks offer “second chance” business checking accounts for applicants with past account problems. They may carry higher fees or fewer features, but they let you start operating and rebuild banking history. Online-only banks and fintech platforms also tend to be more flexible on ChexSystems flags than traditional institutions.

If You Are Not a U.S. Resident

You can still open a business bank account with an EIN without a Social Security number. Requirements vary, but you will generally need a foreign passport or other government-issued photo ID as your primary identification, plus a secondary form of ID such as a foreign driver’s license or a major credit card. Some banks accept a Foreign Tax Identification Number issued by your home country in place of an SSN.

One thing to plan around: you cannot apply for the EIN itself online if your principal business is outside the United States. Apply by phone at 267-941-1099, by fax, or by mail, and expect the process to take longer than the instant online issuance available to U.S.-based applicants.9Internal Revenue Service. Get an Employer Identification Number Once you have the number, bring your CP 575 letter and your foreign identification to the bank. The verification step usually runs longer than it would for a domestic applicant, because the bank may need to manually confirm documents that do not appear in standard U.S. databases.
