How to Lift a Credit Freeze: Temporary Thaws and Single-Creditor Access

To lift a credit freeze, contact each of the three nationwide credit bureaus — Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion — separately and ask them to lift the freeze on your file, either for a set window of time or permanently. You can do this online, by phone, or by mail. It is free, and when you submit online or by phone the bureau has one hour to act.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

Pick the Right Kind of Lift

You have two options. A temporary lift, sometimes called a thaw, opens your file for a specific window of dates you set, and the freeze snaps back into place automatically when that window ends. A permanent removal takes the freeze off entirely and leaves it off until you place a new one.

For most situations, a temporary lift is the better choice. If you’re applying for a mortgage, an auto loan, or a new credit card, set a window that covers when the lender expects to pull your report. Give yourself a buffer. If the loan officer says they’ll pull “sometime next week,” set the window for two weeks rather than trying to guess the exact day.

Find Out Which Bureau Your Creditor Uses

A freeze sits at each bureau independently, and lifting it at one has no effect on the other two.2Federal Trade Commission. Credit Freezes and Fraud Alerts Before you lift anything, ask the lender, landlord, or other party which bureau they plan to check. Many creditors pull from only one. If your mortgage lender uses Experian, lifting only at Experian keeps Equifax and TransUnion locked and limits how much of your file is exposed. If the creditor won’t say, or you’re not sure, lift at all three.

How to Submit the Request

The old system of a static PIN issued when you first placed your freeze is largely gone. Equifax no longer requires the former 10-digit PIN; you manage the freeze by logging into a myEquifax account.3Equifax. Manage Equifax Security Freeze Without PIN Experian works the same way, with a free online account replacing the PIN.4Experian. Freeze or Unfreeze Your Credit File for Free TransUnion uses an online account through its freeze-management portal.

Set up these accounts before you actually need them. Creating a myEquifax or Experian login while a loan officer waits on the other end of the phone is not the moment to discover your information doesn’t match bureau records. Once the accounts exist, log in once to confirm you can see your freeze status.

If you can’t verify your identity online, you can call the bureau or send a written request by mail. Mail-based requests need more documentation: your full name, Social Security number, date of birth, addresses for the past two years, a copy of a government-issued ID, and a utility bill or bank statement.5Experian. How to Unfreeze Your Credit Report Gather these before you need them.

How Long the Bureau Has to Act

Federal law sets maximum processing times. Requests submitted online or by phone must be processed within one hour. Mailed requests get a longer window of up to three business days after the bureau receives the letter.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts The one-hour rule covers both temporary lifts and permanent removals. For a home closing or any time-sensitive application, use the website or phone. Mail is really only workable when you know weeks in advance.

You should get a confirmation through the same channel you used to submit. Verify it before telling the lender to proceed. Keep the confirmation, too. If a creditor later reports your file was still frozen when they tried to pull it, the confirmation is your proof.

The Lift Is Free

Since 2018, all three nationwide credit bureaus must place, temporarily lift, and permanently remove a security freeze at no charge. The requirement is written into 15 U.S.C. § 1681c-1, which says the bureaus must act “free of charge.”1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts If any bureau tries to charge you, something is wrong.

A Tighter Option: Access for One Creditor

Some bureaus let you grant one-time access to a single creditor instead of opening the file to anyone during a date window. Experian, for example, can issue a temporary PIN you share with one lender for one pull.6Experian. Simple Steps to Lift an Experian Security Freeze If you’re especially cautious about how long your file stays open, ask the bureau whether single-creditor access is available before defaulting to a date-range lift.

You May Not Need to Lift at All

A freeze does not seal your file from everyone. Companies you already have an account with can keep pulling your report for account maintenance, credit-line reviews, and upgrades, along with their debt collectors and any buyer of the debt.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts Insurance companies can access it for underwriting. Employers and landlords running background or tenant screening can pull it, though employers must first get your written consent on a standalone disclosure form.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681b – Permissible Purposes of Consumer Reports Government agencies acting under a court order, warrant, or subpoena, child support enforcement offices, and agencies collecting delinquent taxes can also access the file without a lift. So a limit-increase review by your current card issuer, or a tenant-screening pull for a rental, doesn’t require you to lift anything.

Lifting on Behalf of a Child or Protected Adult

Federal law lets parents, guardians, and other legal representatives lift a freeze for someone who can’t manage it themselves. A “protected consumer” is a child under 16, an incapacitated person, or someone with an appointed guardian or conservator.8Federal Trade Commission. Managing Someone Else’s Money: New Protection From ID Theft and Fraud The same one-hour and three-business-day timelines apply.1Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 USC 1681c-1 – Identity Theft Prevention; Fraud Alerts and Active Duty Alerts

To submit the request, you have to give the bureau proof of your authority and proof of your own identity. A parent can use a birth certificate to establish the relationship. Guardians and conservators need the court order appointing them, and someone acting under a power of attorney can submit that document.8Federal Trade Commission. If You Apply Before Lifting

Applying for credit while the freeze is still active means the lender can’t pull your report, and the application will stall or be denied. The freeze itself does not hurt your credit score, and the failed pull does not leave a negative mark. But it costs time. In a real estate closing or a limited-window financing offer, that delay can lose the deal. Lift the freeze first, confirm it went through, then submit the application.
