What the Transcript Shows
The Wage and Income Transcript lists every information return the IRS received under your Social Security number for a given year. That means W-2 data with wages, tips, and federal tax withholdings from each employer, plus 1099 forms covering freelance and contract work, interest, dividends, retirement distributions, and other payments.1Internal Revenue Service. A few limits are worth knowing before you request one. State and local tax information from your W-2s is not included.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 159, How to Get a Wage and Income Transcript or Copy of Form W-2 The transcript only reflects what payers actually filed, so if an employer or platform failed to submit a form, that income won’t show up. And the online system can handle roughly 85 income documents per tax year; above that, the online version won’t generate and you’ll need to request the transcript by mail using Form 4506-T.2Internal Revenue Service. One thing this document is not: a copy of the tax returns you filed. Those are a separate request with a separate fee. The transcript itself is free every way you can order it.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them

If you don’t already have an account, first-time setup runs through ID.me, the identity verification service the IRS uses. You’ll need a photo of a government-issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, or passport) and a live selfie taken with your phone or webcam. If the automated selfie check fails, ID.me offers a live video call with an agent to finish the process. Anyone who already has an ID.me account from another government agency can sign in without redoing verification.4Internal Revenue Service. How to Register for IRS Online Self-Help Tools

You can also file Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return, by mail or fax.5Internal Revenue Service. About Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return The form asks for your Social Security number, date of birth, and the address on your most recent return. Use the name exactly as it appeared on that filing; mismatches slow processing. Where you send the completed form depends on the state where you lived when the return was filed.6Internal Revenue Service. Where to File Addresses for Filing Form 4506-T
Paper transcripts usually arrive in 5 to 10 days. If the IRS has no data for the years you asked about, you’ll get a notice saying so instead.
One trap with mailed requests: the IRS sends the transcript to the address currently on file, not wherever you ask it to go. If you’ve moved since your last return, file Form 8822, Change of Address, first. The address update generally takes four to six weeks.7Internal Revenue Service. How Far Back the Records Go
Ten tax years, including the current one.1Internal Revenue Service. Topic No. 159, How to Get a Wage and Income Transcript or Copy of Form W-2 So in 2026, you can reach back to the 2016 tax year. Older than that, and the IRS transcript system won’t have it.
Current-year data loads gradually. Prior-year information returns generally begin appearing on transcripts the first week of February.2Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them A transcript pulled in February won’t be as complete as one pulled in May or June, because late-filing payers continue to submit forms for months. If you check very early and see “No record of return filed,” the data probably just hasn’t posted yet.
If Your Records Go Back Further Than Ten Years
The Social Security Administration keeps its own earnings records reaching back to 1937. Annual earnings totals are free to view through a my Social Security account at ssa.gov, though the online statement shows yearly totals without listing individual employers.9Social Security Administration. For an itemized statement broken out by employer, submit Form SSA-7050, Request for Social Security Earnings Information. A certified detailed earnings statement costs $96.10Social Security Administration. Form SSA-7050, Request for Social Security Earnings Information The fee makes it impractical for routine use, but for verifying jobs from decades ago that sit outside the IRS’s ten-year window, it may be your only option.
If Something Is Missing or Wrong
When income you know you earned doesn’t appear on the transcript, the usual cause is that the payer never filed the information return with the IRS. This is more common with small employers and short-term gigs. Contact the payer directly and ask them to file the missing or corrected form. You can also flag the issue to the IRS, which may follow up with the payer.
Amounts that look wrong reflect errors in what was reported, not IRS keying mistakes. Compare the transcript against your own copies of W-2s and 1099s, then push the payer to submit a corrected form. That’s the only way the underlying record changes.
When a Lender Asks for Your Transcripts
Mortgage lenders and other financial institutions often want to verify income directly rather than accept paperwork from you. The channel for that is the Income Verification Express Service, or IVES.11Internal Revenue Service. Income Verification Express Service The lender fills out Form 4506-C, you sign to authorize the release, and the IRS delivers the transcript straight to the lender’s secure mailbox.12Internal Revenue Service. Getting Started Using IVES When a mortgage officer asks for your “tax transcripts,” this is almost always the process they mean.
