Pick the Right Letter Before You Sign In
The VA offers several letters on the same download page, and pulling the wrong one is the most common reason people end up going back a second time. Two cover most requests:
- The Benefit Summary Letter, sometimes called a VA award letter, shows your service dates, discharge status, combined disability rating, and monthly benefit amount. Employers, lenders, and state benefits offices usually want this one.
- The Decision Letter is the detailed ruling the VA issues after deciding a claim. It lists the rating for each claimed condition, the effective date, your monthly compensation, and the reasoning. Reach for this if you’re weighing an appeal or need the full breakdown.

Downloading Your Letter on VA.gov
You need either a Login.gov or ID.me account to sign in. Those are the only two options. Old My HealtheVet and DS Logon credentials no longer work, so if that’s what you used years ago, you’ll be starting fresh.2U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Creating an Account for VA.gov
Login.gov is the federal government’s own sign-in service. ID.me is a private company under contract with government agencies. Either one gets you to the same letters.
Before you can pull any records, you’ll need to verify your identity. The verification step usually runs about 10 minutes and requires a valid, unexpired government-issued photo ID.3Veterans Affairs. ID.me accepts those plus a U.S. passport or passport card through its self-service option, and it offers video-call and in-person verification if you don’t have any of those documents. Once you’re signed in and verified, go to va.gov/records/download-va-letters. The VA will first show you the mailing address on file and ask you to confirm it, because some letters print that address on the document itself. Getting Your Letter by Phone or in Person

Fixing Common Problems
The most frequent snag is sign-in. If you set up VA access years ago through My HealtheVet or DS Logon, those credentials won’t work anymore. If a letter you expected isn’t there after you sign in, the usual reason is that the VA hasn’t finished the underlying claim.
