To get your VA award letter, sign in to VA.gov with a Login.gov or ID.me account and download the Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter as a PDF. That’s the fastest route. You can also pull it from the VA: Health and Benefits mobile app, call the VA to have a copy mailed, or walk into a regional office and have one printed while you wait. Every method produces the same official document.

Go to va.gov/records/download-va-letters and sign in. Login.gov and ID.me are the only two options now. The VA removed the My HealtheVet sign-in on March 5, 2025, and discontinued DS Logon on November 18, 2025, so if either of those was your login, you’ll need to create a new account first.1Veterans Affairs. Both Login.gov and ID.me require identity verification: uploading a photo ID and confirming personal details. The one-time setup runs about 10 to 15 minutes. After that, you won’t need to repeat it.
Once signed in, the VA asks you to review the mailing address on file. That address prints on the letter, so update it if it’s wrong, though the letter is valid either way.2Veterans Affairs. You’ll need a current version of Adobe Acrobat Reader to open it.
Use the VA Mobile App
The VA: Health and Benefits app for iOS and Android lets you download common VA letters straight from your phone with the same Login.gov or ID.me credentials.3VA.gov. Request It by Phone or Mail
If you can’t get online, call the VA benefits hotline at 1-800-827-1000. A representative can look up your records and arrange for a copy to be mailed to the address on file. Have your full name, Social Security number, and VA file number ready before you call. For a written request, send a letter with your full name, current mailing address, Social Security number, and VA file number to your regional VA office. Between processing and delivery, this route can take several weeks, so plan ahead if you’re working against a deadline.
Pick It Up at a Regional Office
Any VA regional office with a benefits section can print your award letter on the spot. Find the nearest one at va.gov/find-locations, and call ahead to confirm hours and that someone is available to help with letter requests.5Veterans Affairs. Find VA Locations
Bring a government-issued photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, along with your Social Security number and VA file number. Staff can pull your records and print the letter while you wait. This is the best option if you need a physical copy the same day and can’t print one yourself.
Which Letter To Choose
The VA offers several benefit letters, and “award letter” is shorthand most people use for the Benefit Summary and Service Verification Letter. That one confirms your disability rating, monthly payment amount, and service history, and it’s what lenders, employers, and government agencies typically ask for.2Veterans Affairs. Other letters on the same page serve narrower purposes: a Benefit Verification Letter confirms current benefit status without full service history, a Service Verification Letter documents service dates and branch without disability details, and there are separate letters for civil service preference, commissary eligibility, minimum essential coverage under the ACA, and creditable prescription drug coverage for Medicare purposes. Decision letters and GI Bill Statements of Benefits are downloadable too. One thing that isn’t on this page: a VA home loan Certificate of Eligibility. For that, use the separate housing COE tool on VA.gov.
When You’ll Be Asked for It
Mortgage lenders are among the most frequent requesters. When you apply for a VA home loan or any mortgage, lenders use the benefit summary letter to verify disability income, which counts toward qualifying income. The PDF downloaded from VA.gov is generally accepted, though some lenders want a recent copy, so pull a fresh one close to your application date.
The letter also matters for federal student loan discharge. If the VA has rated you 100 percent disabled or totally disabled based on individual unemployability, you may qualify for Total and Permanent Disability discharge, and the application requires documentation showing the date the VA made that determination.6Federal Student Aid. Property tax exemptions are another common use. Many states and counties offer reduced or eliminated property taxes for disabled veterans, with qualifying percentages and exemption amounts varying by jurisdiction. Your award letter is the proof of rating when you apply with your local assessor. You may also need it for state hunting or fishing license discounts, vehicle registration fee waivers, public transit benefits, and other state-level programs. Keeping a current PDF on your phone or in cloud storage means it’s ready whenever something comes up.
If You Can’t Sign In
If you forgot your password, reset it through Login.gov or ID.me directly. The VA can’t reset those for you because they’re separate systems.

If you sign in but no letter appears, that usually means the VA hasn’t finished processing your claim or there’s a records mismatch. Call the benefits hotline at 1-800-827-1000 to check status. Representatives can also confirm whether a letter has been mailed and give you a rough timeline.
If the Letter Has an Error
Your award letter reflects whatever the VA has in its system. A simple administrative mistake like a misspelled name or wrong address can usually be fixed by calling the benefits hotline at 1-800-827-1000 or stopping by a regional office. VA Form 21-4138 (Statement in Support of Claim) lets you submit a written explanation of the issue, and you can download the form from the VA’s forms page or pick one up in person.
If the error involves your actual disability rating or effective date, that’s a substantive issue and requires a formal filing. You can submit a supplemental claim with new evidence, or, if you believe the VA made a clear factual or legal error in a prior decision, file a motion for revision based on clear and unmistakable error. That second path has strict requirements: you have to identify the specific mistake and explain why the outcome would have been different without it. Getting this wrong at the Board of Veterans’ Appeals level can permanently bar you from raising the same issue again, so most veterans work with an accredited Veterans Service Organization or attorney for these challenges.
