The Download Steps

Once you’re signed in, the step that trips people up is picking the right application year. Open the application for the year you had coverage, not the current year. Check your Marketplace account’s messages or notifications section around late January if the form hasn’t appeared yet. Forms are sometimes posted in batches, so don’t panic before February 1.

What to Verify Before You Use It

Open the PDF and check the basics before it goes anywhere near your tax return:

  • Part III lists 12 monthly rows with three columns: your monthly premium, the second lowest cost Silver plan (SLCSP) premium, and the advance payment of the premium tax credit.   • Part II lists every person covered under the plan. Confirm names and Social Security numbers.
  • Look closely at Column B, the SLCSP. If any month is zero or blank for a month you had coverage, or if you had household changes during the year (a new baby, a move, a marriage), the SLCSP amount is likely wrong. If you switched plans mid-year, added or dropped a household member, or otherwise changed your coverage, you may find more than one 1095-A in your account for the same tax year.7Internal Revenue Service. If You Can’t Get Into Your Account

If you’ve forgotten your login, the system lets you reset your password using the email tied to your account. Some accounts use security questions or two-factor codes sent by text or email, and those codes expire quickly. Entering incorrect information repeatedly can temporarily lock your account, so slow down if you’re guessing.

HealthCare.gov also runs an identity-proofing step that can fail if you’ve moved or changed your name since enrolling. When automated verification doesn’t go through, you can upload identity documents through your account. Acceptable file types are PDF, JPEG, and PNG, and each file must be under 10 MB.8Health Insurance Marketplace. If the Form Isn’t There

If you had Marketplace coverage but no 1095-A has appeared in your account by early February, call the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596 (TTY: 1-855-889-4325).1HealthCare.gov. Do not file with estimated numbers. The IRS receives 1095-A data from the Marketplace directly and cross-checks it against your Form 8962. If yours is significantly delayed and April is closing in, requesting an extension with Form 4868 gets you more time without penalties.

If the Form Has Errors

What you do next depends on where you are in the filing process. If you haven’t filed, wait for the corrected version (it will have “CORRECTED” checked at the top) and use that one.10Internal Revenue Service. A useful distinction: if the correction only increases your refund or decreases what you owe, amending is optional. If it increases your tax liability, the IRS expects you to amend.

Why the 1095-A Matters More for 2026

Anyone who received advance premium tax credits has to file Form 8962 with their return to reconcile those payments against the credit they actually qualified for based on final income.11Internal Revenue Service. For tax years before 2026, the IRS capped how much of that excess you had to repay based on income. Those caps are gone. The flip side: if your income came in lower than estimated, you may qualify for a larger credit than you received upfront, and you’ll get the difference as a bigger refund.

Skipping reconciliation is the costliest mistake tied to this form. If you received advance credits and don’t file a return with Form 8962, the Marketplace will cut off your advance premium tax credit for future years, leaving you responsible for the full monthly premium with no subsidy.14Internal Revenue Service.
