How to Get Your CPP Tax Slip: MSCA, CRA Account, or Paper Copy

Your CPP tax slip is officially called the T4A(P), Statement of Canada Pension Plan Benefits, and the fastest way to get it is by signing in to My Service Canada Account and downloading a PDF.1Canada.ca. T4A(P) Statement of Canada Pension Plan Benefits The slip lists the retirement, survivor, disability, or death benefits paid to you during the previous calendar year, and you need it to file. Download It From My Service Canada Account

My Service Canada Account (MSCA) is where your slip appears first, usually well before any paper copy is mailed. You can sign in three ways: with an Interac Sign-In Partner using your regular online banking credentials, with a GCKey username and password, or with a provincial digital ID if you live in British Columbia or Alberta.3Canada.ca. My Service Canada Account (MSCA) The Interac route is the easiest for most people because it reuses a login you already have.

Once inside, open the tax slips section, choose the tax year, and click the T4A(P) entry. You’ll see a digital slip with the dollar amounts in each box, and you can download or print the PDF. The CRA accepts the electronic version the same way it accepts a paper original.

If You Don’t Have an MSCA Profile Yet

Registering requires a Personal Access Code (PAC) to confirm your identity. If you’ve already applied for CPP or OAS, one was mailed to you automatically.3Canada.ca. My Service Canada Account (MSCA) If you never received it or lost it, request a new one online and it will arrive by mail in five to ten business days.4Canada.ca. Verify Your Identity With a Personal Access Code The code goes to the address Service Canada has on file, so confirm that address is current before you ask for one.

Get It Through CRA My Account

Service Canada reports your CPP amounts directly to the Canada Revenue Agency, so the same figures show up in CRA My Account under “Tax information slips.”5Canada Revenue Agency. Timing matters here. The CRA generally receives slips by the end of February, but they may not be loaded into your account until mid-March.6Canada.ca. Auto-fill My Return Checking in early February may just show a blank.

Check Your Address First

A lot of missing slips trace back to an old address. If you’ve moved since you started collecting CPP, your paper T4A(P) is landing in someone else’s mailbox. Update your address by submitting an eServiceCanada form online and a representative will call you back within two business days, by phoning the CPP line, or by visiting an office with ID.9Canada.ca. Change Your Personal Information With Service Canada You currently cannot change your CPP address through MSCA, so don’t assume the online portal has it covered. Do the update well before February.

If the Slip Is Late, Missing, or Wrong

You still have to file on time, slip or no slip. The CRA lets you estimate your CPP income from bank statements or payment stubs showing the monthly deposits. Total those up and use the figure. Attach a note naming Service Canada as the issuer, describing the income as CPP benefits, and saying you’re waiting on the official slip.5Canada Revenue Agency. If the amount on the slip doesn’t match your records, call Service Canada at 1-800-277-9914 before you file.8Canada.ca. Contact Canada Pension Plan An agent can walk through your payment history and issue a corrected slip if there’s an error. It’s easier to fix upstream than to unwind a return you filed with wrong numbers.

Reading the Slip Without Double-Counting

Once you have the slip, the boxes need care. Box 20 is the taxable total, and it already includes the amounts shown in Boxes 14 through 19. Enter Box 20 on line 11400 of your return. Box 14 (retirement benefit), Box 16 (disability benefit), and Box 18 (death benefit) are already inside Box 20, so don’t add them again. Box 22 shows income tax already withheld from your payments; enter that on line 43700 so you get credit for it.1Canada.ca. T4A(P) Statement of Canada Pension Plan Benefits

The most common error is stacking Box 14 or Box 16 on top of Box 20. That overstates your income and inflates your tax bill until the CRA catches it.

If You Live Outside Canada

The process is different for non-residents. Canada generally withholds 25% tax on pension payments sent abroad, though a tax treaty with your country of residence may lower that rate, and you may receive an NR4 slip in place of or alongside the T4A(P).10Canada.ca.
