The quickest way to get your 1099 form is to contact the payer directly, since most post a downloadable copy in an online account and will reissue one by mail on request. If the payer has gone quiet or out of business, the IRS will give you the same income data for free through a Wage and Income Transcript. One thing to check before you start hunting: beginning with the 2026 tax year, the reporting threshold for many 1099 types rose from $600 to $2,000, so a payer who would have sent you a form in prior years may no longer be required to send one.1Internal Revenue Service. General Instructions for Certain Information Returns (2026)
Check With the Payer First
Payers mail 1099 forms to whatever address you listed on your Form W-9 when you started working with them.2Internal Revenue Service. Form W-9 (Rev. March 2024) Federal rules require the form to be postmarked by January 31 of the year after the tax year, so paper copies typically show up in early to mid-February.3Internal Revenue Service. Information Returns (Forms 1099) If you moved and never updated your W-9, that is often where the form went.
Look in the Online Portal
Many payers now post 1099s in an account dashboard before the paper copy ever hits the mail. Payroll platforms, brokerages, and payment processors usually keep them under a “Tax Documents” or “Statements” tab. Check there first.
Check Whether You Consented to Electronic Delivery
A payer can only send your 1099 electronically if you agreed to receive it that way, either in writing or through an electronic process that confirmed you could open the file format they use.4Internal Revenue Service. Requirements for Furnishing Form 1099-G Electronically If you did opt in, look for an email with a subject line along the lines of “IMPORTANT TAX RETURN DOCUMENT AVAILABLE” pointing you to a download link. If you never consented, the payer still owes you a paper copy.
Ask the Payer to Reissue It
If nothing has arrived by mid-February, contact the payer’s accounting, payroll, or HR department. Most handle these requests through a support ticket, phone menu, or help portal. Ask specifically for a reissued copy of your 1099 for the tax year you need.
To confirm your identity, the payer will usually need:
- Your Social Security Number or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number
- The mailing address currently on file
- The specific tax year
- The payer’s business name or Employer Identification Number, which you can pull from an old pay stub, contract, or bank statement
Ask for a confirmation or ticket number so you can follow up. A digital copy uploaded to the portal or sent via secure link is faster than waiting on the mail. If you still have nothing by the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. The IRS can contact the payer on your behalf.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect It also helps to know that payers face escalating per-form penalties for late or missing 1099s, starting at $60 per form and climbing to $340 or more.6Internal Revenue Service. Information Return Penalties Mentioning that in a follow-up sometimes gets things moving.
Get the Data From the IRS
If the payer is unresponsive, closed, or unreachable, the IRS can give you the same numbers. A Wage and Income Transcript summarizes every information return, including 1099s, filed under your taxpayer ID for a given year. Current-year data generally becomes available in the first week of February.7Internal Revenue Service. Transcript Types for Individuals and Ways to Order Them
A transcript is not a photocopy of the original 1099. It is a summary of what the IRS received, showing each payer’s name, address, and the total reported.8Internal Revenue Service. Transcript or Copy of Form W-2 For filing your return, that is generally all you need.
Online
The fastest option is the “Get Transcript Online” tool at irs.gov. You’ll sign in with an IRS account verified through ID.me, which requires a photo ID such as a driver’s license or passport, plus a selfie taken with a phone or webcam.9Internal Revenue Service. If the 1099 You Have Is Wrong
Different problem, similar first step: ask the payer to issue a corrected form.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Typical errors involve overstated income, a wrong Social Security Number, or a bad address. The reissued form will be marked “CORRECTED” in the header and replaces the original.
If the payer refuses or ignores you past the end of February, call the IRS at 800-829-1040. File your return using the correct figures from your own records rather than the wrong numbers on the 1099. If a corrected form arrives after you’ve already filed and it changes your tax, file Form 1040-X to amend.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect
For a missing or wrong 1099-R covering retirement distributions, there is one extra option: file Form 4852 as a substitute, using your best estimate of the distribution and any tax withheld.10Internal Revenue Service. Form 4852 – Substitute for Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement, or Form 1099-R Form 4852 only substitutes for W-2s and 1099-Rs. It does not cover other 1099 types like 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC.
File on Time Even Without the Form
A missing 1099 doesn’t excuse you from reporting the income and doesn’t extend your deadline. The IRS expects you to file on time using your own records: bank statements, invoices, payment app histories, contracts.5Internal Revenue Service. What to Do When a W-2 or Form 1099 Is Missing or Incorrect Income is taxable whether or not a payer sent a form.11Internal Revenue Service. What to Do With Form 1099-K
That matters more under the 2026 rules, because payments below the $2,000 threshold from a given payer may not generate a 1099-NEC or 1099-MISC at all. The income still belongs on your return. Skipping income that a payer did report can trigger the IRS’s automated matching system, which can produce a notice and an accuracy-related penalty of 20 percent on the underpayment.12Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 USC 6662 – Imposition of Accuracy-Related Penalty on Underpayments
