How to Get the Right to Work in the UK: Visas and Sponsorship

To get the right to work in the United Kingdom as a non-citizen, you almost always need two things: a job offer from a UK employer who holds a Home Office sponsor licence, and a work visa that matches the role, your salary, and your English language ability. The Skilled Worker visa is the main route, but several other visas exist for healthcare staff, graduates, entrepreneurs, and people with exceptional talent, and a few let you work without any sponsor at all.

Who Does Not Need a Work Visa

British and Irish citizens can work in the UK without any immigration restrictions. So can people with settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme or indefinite leave to remain.1GOV.UK. UK Visa Sponsorship for Employers – Overview Everyone else needs immigration permission before starting a job.

How Sponsorship Works

Most UK work visas are sponsor-based. The employer must hold a valid sponsor licence from the Home Office, which authorises them to hire workers from abroad.1GOV.UK. UK Visa Sponsorship for Employers – Overview You can check whether a company is licensed by searching the register of licensed sponsors on GOV.UK.

Once an employer agrees to sponsor you, they issue a Certificate of Sponsorship. It’s an electronic record with a unique reference number confirming your job title, salary, and conditions of employment. You put that reference number into your visa application.2GOV.UK. UK Visa Sponsorship for Employers – Certificates of Sponsorship Without a Certificate of Sponsorship, a sponsor-based application cannot proceed.

The Skilled Worker Visa

This is the most common way into the UK job market. You need a job offer from a licensed sponsor for a role that meets the required skill level and salary threshold. As of July 2025, the general salary floor is £41,700 per year, and your pay must also meet the “going rate” set for your specific occupation.3GOV.UK. Review of Salary Requirements (Accessible)

Some applicants qualify at a lower rate. If you are under 26, a recent graduate, hold a relevant PhD, or your role appears on the immigration salary list, the threshold drops to £33,400, provided your pay is at least 70% of the going rate. Roles on the salary list still require the full going rate.4GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – When You Can Be Paid Less

You also have to show English at B1 or above on the Common European Framework. A degree taught in English, a UK qualification, or a Secure English Language Test from an approved provider will all satisfy this.5GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Knowledge of English

A Skilled Worker visa lasts up to five years and can be extended. After five continuous years of lawful residence, you can apply for indefinite leave to remain.

Other Work Visa Routes

Health and Care Worker Visa

Qualified doctors, nurses, and adult social care professionals can apply on this dedicated route. It works like the Skilled Worker visa but with a lower application fee and full exemption from the Immigration Health Surcharge, saving over £1,000 per year.6GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa – Overview You still need a job with a licensed sponsor in the health or social care sector.

Care workers and senior care workers face one important limit: if you were hired into one of these roles after 11 March 2024, you generally cannot bring a partner or children as dependants unless a narrow exception applies, such as a child born in the UK.7GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare roles are not affected.

Global Talent Visa

Established or emerging leaders in academia, research, arts and culture, or digital technology can use this route with no employer sponsorship. You need an endorsement from an approved body first, though winners of certain prestigious prizes listed by the Home Office skip the endorsement stage.8GOV.UK. Apply for the Global Talent Visa – Overview You can change employers, freelance, or start a business without updating your immigration status.

Graduate Visa

International students who complete an eligible UK degree can switch to a Graduate visa and work in almost any job. Apply on or before 31 December 2026 and the visa lasts two years; apply from 1 January 2027 onward and it lasts 18 months. Doctoral graduates get three years either way.9GOV.UK. Graduate Visa – Overview No sponsor or job offer is required.

High Potential Individual Visa

Recent graduates from top-ranked universities outside the UK can apply without a sponsor. Your qualification must be from within the last five years, and the university must appear on the Home Office’s eligible list for the year you graduated.10GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa

Citizens of participating countries can live and work in the UK for up to two years with no sponsor. The general age range is 18 to 30, but applicants from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and South Korea can apply up to 35. You need at least £2,530 in savings.11GOV.UK. Youth Mobility Scheme Visa – Overview The list of eligible countries is short and currently includes Japan, Iceland, Andorra, Uruguay, Monaco, and San Marino alongside the four higher-age-limit countries.12GOV.UK. Innovator Founder Visa

If you have an innovative business idea endorsed by an approved body, this route lets you come to the UK to build the venture. The idea must be genuinely new to the UK market.13GOV.UK. Innovator Founder Visa – Overview

Documents You’ll Need

Sponsored work visas share a common evidence set:

  • A current passport or valid travel document.
  • Your Certificate of Sponsorship reference number.
  • Proof you can support yourself financially, unless your employer confirms on the Certificate of Sponsorship that they’ll cover your initial costs.
  • Proof of English at B1 or above, either through a Secure English Language Test or a qualifying academic degree taught in English.5GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Knowledge of English
  • A criminal record certificate for some routes and nationalities.
  • Tuberculosis test results if you’re applying from a country on the Home Office’s TB list.

You’ll also give biometric information (fingerprints and a digital photograph), either at a visa application centre or through the UK Immigration: ID Check smartphone app.15GOV.UK. Biometric Information – Introduction (Accessible)

How to Apply and What It Costs

All UK work visa applications start online at GOV.UK. You create an account, complete the form, and pay the visa fee and the Immigration Health Surcharge together.

Skilled Worker visa fees depend on where you apply from and how long you’re staying. From outside the UK, expect £769 for stays up to three years or £1,519 for longer stays. If you’re switching or extending inside the UK, the fees are £885 and £1,751.16GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – How Much It Costs Health and Care Worker applicants pay reduced fees.

The Immigration Health Surcharge gives you access to the NHS for the full length of your visa. It’s £1,035 per year for most applicants and £776 per year for students, children, and Youth Mobility Scheme visa holders, paid in full upfront.17GOV.UK. Standard processing takes around three weeks from outside the UK and around eight weeks from inside. Paid priority and super priority services shorten that if you need a faster decision, with each family member paying the upgrade fee separately.18GOV.UK. Proving Your Right to Work After Approval

The UK immigration system is now fully digital. Physical Biometric Residence Permits have expired and been replaced by eVisas: online records of your status.19GOV.UK. Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs)

To prove your right to work to an employer, log in to your UK Visas and Immigration account and generate a share code. It’s valid for 90 days and can be used repeatedly. Your employer enters the share code and your date of birth into the Home Office’s online checking service.20GOV.UK. eVisas – View eVisa and Get Share Code to Prove Immigration Status If you’re arriving from abroad, you’ll get a temporary vignette sticker in your passport for the journey, and your eVisa takes over once you’re in the country.21GOV.UK. eVisas – Access and Use Your Online Immigration Status

Set up your UKVI account as soon as your visa is granted, and confirm you can log in before your first day of work. Employers are required by law to complete a right-to-work check before you start, and an inaccessible eVisa can delay you.22GOV.UK. Prove Your Right to Work to an Employer – Overview

If You Change Jobs or Lose Your Sponsor

A Skilled Worker visa is tied to a specific employer and role. To move to a different company, you need a new Certificate of Sponsorship and must apply to update your visa before starting the new job. You can keep working in your current role while the Home Office decides, but do not begin the new role until your updated permission is confirmed.23GOV.UK. Update Your Visa if You Change Job or Employer

Losing your sponsor is more urgent. If your employer revokes sponsorship (through redundancy, closure, or any other reason), the Home Office typically curtails your visa and gives you around 60 days to find a new sponsor, switch category, or leave. Overstaying can lead to removal and future re-entry bans. Sixty days is tighter than it sounds once you factor in finding a job, receiving a fresh Certificate of Sponsorship, and submitting the application, so start looking the moment your position is at risk.

Bringing Family

Most long-term work visas allow a spouse, civil partner, unmarried partner, and children under 18 to come as dependants. They can work in most jobs and study, but cannot claim public benefits.24GOV.UK. Skilled Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children

Each dependant applies separately and pays their own visa fee and Immigration Health Surcharge. If your employer isn’t covering costs, you must show savings of £285 for a partner, £315 for one child, and £200 for each additional child, held for at least 28 consecutive days before applying.7GOV.UK. Health and Care Worker Visa – Your Partner and Children Dependants’ visas expire on the same date as yours, and they can apply for settlement alongside you at the five-year point.

Working Without Authorization

Working in the UK without proper permission can lead to detention and removal, and a record of illegal work or overstaying makes future UK visas much harder to obtain. Employers face fines and criminal prosecution, so legitimate companies will insist on verifying your status before hiring. Visa conditions matter too: if your permission limits the type or hours of work you can do, breaching those conditions carries the same consequences as working with no visa at all.
