There are four realistic ways to get out of a OneMain Financial loan: pay the balance in full, refinance it with another lender, negotiate a settlement for less than you owe, or discharge the debt in bankruptcy. OneMain personal loans run from $1,500 to $20,000 at fixed APRs between 18.00% and 35.99% with terms of 24 to 60 months,1OneMain Financial. Personal Loans – Apply Online and the right exit depends on what you can afford, whether your loan is secured by a vehicle, and how much credit damage you can absorb.
Pay the Loan Off in Full
The cleanest exit is paying the remaining balance. OneMain does not charge a prepayment penalty, so paying ahead of schedule costs nothing extra.2OneMain Financial. What Is a Prepayment Penalty on a Personal Loan Request a payoff quote, often called a 10-day payoff, through your online account or by phone. The quote shows your principal plus the interest that will accrue over the next 10 days, and you have that window to send payment before the number changes. Miss the window and you need a new quote, because daily interest keeps running.
Once your payment clears and the balance hits zero, OneMain sends a letter confirming the loan is paid in full.3OneMain Financial. What Is a 10-Day Payoff, and How Does It Work Keep that letter. You may need it to prove the debt is gone or to get a lien removed from a vehicle title.
Refinance With Another Lender
Refinancing means taking out a new loan somewhere else and using the proceeds to pay off OneMain. People usually do this to get a lower rate or a term that fits their budget better. The new lender asks for your payoff amount and account details, then typically sends the funds directly to OneMain’s payment center rather than routing the money through you.
Interest keeps accruing between the date of the payoff quote and the day OneMain actually posts the funds. If the new loan comes up short because of that gap, you owe the difference immediately. After the payment posts, OneMain issues a paid-in-full notice.3OneMain Financial. What Is a 10-Day Payoff, and How Does It Work The debt itself has not disappeared; it has moved to a new contract with new terms.
Settle for Less Than You Owe
If paying the full balance is not realistic, OneMain may accept a lump-sum settlement for a fraction of what you owe. Lenders usually consider settlements only after an account is well past due, because partial recovery beats a total loss. The percentage they will accept depends on how delinquent the account is, your finances, and OneMain’s internal policies.
Build Your Hardship Case
Before you call the collections or loss-mitigation line, pull together documents that back up what you plan to say: bank statements covering the last 60 days, your two most recent pay stubs, and any benefit award letters such as Social Security or disability. A short hardship letter explaining the cause of the problem (job loss, medical emergency, reduced hours) shows you are negotiating in good faith.
Get the Deal in Writing Before You Pay
Never send money on the strength of a phone call. Get a written settlement agreement, by mail or secure electronic signature, that states the exact dollar amount, the payment deadline, and language confirming the debt will be reported “settled in full” or “satisfied in full” when the payment clears. That wording blocks future collection on the remaining balance. Pay by cashier’s check or electronic transfer so you have proof of delivery, and request a final confirmation letter showing a zero balance.
Expect a Tax Bill on the Forgiven Amount
The IRS generally treats forgiven debt as taxable income. When a lender cancels $600 or more, it must send you a Form 1099-C for the canceled amount, and you report that figure on your return for the year of the cancellation.4Internal Revenue Service. Publication 4681, Canceled Debts, Foreclosures, Repossessions, and Abandonments Two exceptions can reduce or eliminate what you owe. Debt discharged in bankruptcy is excluded from gross income entirely. If your total debts exceeded the fair market value of everything you owned immediately before the cancellation, you were insolvent and can exclude the canceled debt up to the amount you were insolvent by.5Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 26 U.S.C. 108 – Income from Discharge of Indebtedness Either exclusion is claimed on IRS Form 982, filed with your return.
Discharge the Debt in Bankruptcy
Bankruptcy is the most severe option, but it ends your personal liability on the loan under court supervision. Two chapters apply to most individuals.
Chapter 7
A court-appointed trustee reviews your assets and may sell nonexempt property to pay creditors. Unsecured personal loans, including the unsecured portion of a partially secured one, are typically wiped out by the discharge order unless something disqualifies you, such as unaccounted-for assets or a recent prior discharge.6Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 727 – Discharge
Chapter 13
Chapter 13 lets you keep property while repaying debts under a court-approved plan funded by your future income.7Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 1322 – Contents of Plan The plan typically runs three years, or five if your household income exceeds the state median for a family your size.8Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 1325 – Confirmation of Plan Unsecured creditors like OneMain may receive only a fraction of what they are owed, with the rest discharged at the end of the plan.
What Filing Does to OneMain Right Away
The moment you file, an automatic stay stops collection calls, lawsuits, wage garnishment, and any effort by OneMain to repossess collateral or enforce a lien.9Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 362 – Automatic Stay You must list OneMain as a creditor in your schedules so the lender gets formal notice.10Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 521 – Debtor’s Duties If your loan is secured by a vehicle, you decide whether to reaffirm the debt and keep the car under the original terms or surrender the collateral. Once the court issues the discharge, it ends your personal liability and bars the lender from any future collection on the discharged balance.11Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 11 U.S.C. 524 – Effect of Discharge
What Happens to the Collateral
Many OneMain loans are secured. For larger amounts, OneMain generally requires a first lien on a motor vehicle no more than 10 years old, titled in your name, and insured.12OneMain Financial. Secured vs. Unsecured Loan – What’s the Difference If you default, the lender can repossess the collateral to recover what you owe. Household goods such as clothing, furniture, appliances, linens, kitchenware, and wedding rings are off limits as collateral under the FTC Credit Practices Rule unless the loan was used to buy those specific items.13eCFR. Part 444 Credit Practices
When you pay off or settle a secured loan, OneMain must release its lien. For a vehicle, that means sending a lien-release document to you or your state’s motor vehicle agency, after which you apply for a new title. Title fees vary by state. Keep the paid-in-full letter and the lien-release paperwork together in case the release is delayed or you later sell the vehicle.
How Each Exit Shows Up on Your Credit
A loan paid in full, whether by your own payment or by refinance, reports as “paid in full” and carries no negative weight. A refinance also adds the new loan as a separate tradeline. A negotiated settlement typically shows as “settled for less than full balance,” which looks worse than a full payoff but better than an unresolved debt. A bankruptcy is the heaviest hit and can stay on your credit report for up to 10 years from the date of the order for relief.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S.C. 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
Other negative marks, such as late payments, charge-offs, and collection accounts, generally cannot be reported for more than seven years, measured from the date of the first missed payment that led to the negative status rather than the date you resolve it.14Office of the Law Revision Counsel. 15 U.S.C. 1681c – Requirements Relating to Information Contained in Consumer Reports
If You Are on Active Duty
Two federal laws can change what OneMain is allowed to charge you.
The Servicemembers Civil Relief Act caps interest at 6% per year on debts you took out before entering active duty. You send OneMain a written request with a copy of your orders, no later than 180 days after your active-duty service ends, and the rate reduction applies retroactively to the date your orders were issued. The protection covers active-duty members on Title 10 orders, reservists, qualifying National Guard members, and commissioned officers of the Public Health Service and NOAA.15U.S. Department of Justice. Your Rights as a Servicemember – 6% Interest Rate Cap for Servicemembers on Pre-Service Debts
The Military Lending Act applies to loans taken out while you are on active duty. It caps the Military Annual Percentage Rate at 36%, a figure that includes interest, finance charges, credit insurance premiums, and fees for add-on products.16Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Military Lending Act (MLA) Because OneMain’s APR tops out at 35.99%, the cap may not drop your rate much, but the broader MAPR calculation can still limit what gets bundled into the cost of the loan.
If the Account Has Gone to a Collector
If OneMain has referred your account to a third-party collector, that collector cannot harass you, threaten violence, use obscene language, or call repeatedly to annoy or abuse you, and must honor a request to stop contacting you by a specific method.17Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Section 1006.14 Harassing, Oppressive, or Abusive Conduct These Fair Debt Collection Practices Act rules apply to third-party collectors, not necessarily to OneMain when it is collecting its own debt. If OneMain later sells or transfers the account, the rules apply to whoever takes it over.
